  1. They should not have extended him....unless they are fine with him managing the team even if they take a step back. If they didn't extend him, this season was the perfect time to move on. Oh well.
  2. After b2b ALCS appearances, they had no choice but to try to prolong it. They put a team on paper that looked like a WC contender but it looks like they won't be on that level barring a monster run that is probably not going to happen. Now they have to re adjust their strategy, but making the playoffs in 2017 without losing any prospects was absolutely the right strategy. They just got smacked in the face by age, injuries, and the reality of a small window.
  3. Injuries + old age. Amaro's Phillies won 100+ one year and then were .500 the next year, and then fell off a cliff. It was going to happen eventually based on the way this team was built and its age. We were just hoping that Shatkins could prolong it a bit. Not likely at this point.
  4. This April has made me want to rebuild more than ever.
  5. Osuna's arm was always held together by string. I think he's probably hurt.
  6. We have to wait until Zeke regresses hard before his playing time diminishes. Pearce slumped at the wrong damn time.
  7. Tellez struggling in AAA is like porn to Keith Law.
  8. That's the way I'm looking at this season. Not only the draft pick next year but some mid season trades to get younger and reset. I'm not even mad at these losses (or blown saves in this case).
  9. Osuna wanting to help the tanking efforts. He's a good man.
  10. If anyone knows how to rack up L's in April, it's Brett Cecil.
  11. God damn, what the hell happened to Pearce? It's not even bad luck, he's just been awful.
  12. If you don't impress Gibbons right out of the gate, he tends to lose faith. Pearce starting out poorly was not good for his playing time. Combine that with Zeke and Smoak actually performing well, and he's glued to the bench. Hope he gets to play at some point.
  13. Salty makes Navarro look like Buster Posey.
  14. Yep. No further explanation needed. The guy will miss 6 weeks, give or take, every year with some injury. Just hope Barney starts at short and....ah, who am I kidding.
  15. Again, do you know how hard it is to only win 50 games? That's not even a faint possibility if the team decides to blow it up. Chances are they'll still have enough to win 65-75 games in the lean years. The difference between that range and 81 wins is a lot different than a historically bad team in the history of baseball.
  16. With the last three seasons involving some pretty damn good luck with pitcher injuries (Stroman's freak accident aside) it's weird to see the Jays relying on scrub depth again.
  17. You don't even have to tank in baseball. You can have a good farm system and good big league team at the same time. THe only reason this is a discussion is because AA sacrificed one for the other, which has lead to the reality that the team was going to age before its next group of prospects were ready, forcing a rebuild. The amount of skill it takes to only win 50 games is pretty special. I mean, you'd have to purposely tank and get major injuries to the best scrubs on your team to be that bad, and even then you might win about 55 games.
  18. I agree, I think Vlad alone was worth the penalty. It really depends on what else was out there that was worth throwing millions on.
  19. The Jays aren't tanking though. They are actually trying to win. They have an old veteran team. You can't prevent a bad season from happening in this case. If they were purposely tanking after making the ALCS last year then that's different. In this case, the Jays are bad in spite of trying to field a contender. If attendance, ratings, and revenue drop because of that, then what are you going to do? And yes, this is AA's fault. When you build for one year, that's all you're going to get. Shatkins tried to extend the window for as long as they could and it just wasn't meant to be. At least we can keep track of the minors now and know that Vlad, Bichette, etc, might actually play for the Jays if they pan out, rather than be traded for Joey Votto.
  20. If the Jays can't be good enough to make the playoffs, then they should be bad enough to justify moving pieces at the deadline. .500 is like a nightmare scenario. This roster ain't getting better next year as is.
  21. I think he means if they were going to go over, then they should have just gone crazy and spent huge since they were going to get penalized anyway.
  22. Pearce does well every other year. 2014 good, 2015 bad, 2016 good. He'll recoup his value in 2018. Seriously though, I think it's a confidence thing based on him crying in the dugout. But who knows. He is in his 30's and is coming off surgery. Might be on the decline or maybe the injury will take some time to recover from.
  23. I'm not saying Kelly is any good, but my god, Goins against Sale? Might as well have Estrada bat.
