  1. Teams higher on the win curve than the Jays have avoided qualified free agents who could have added more meaningful wins to their teams. The value of a lost pick is significant to practically every team in the league, which is why you’ll see some players either accept the QO or possibly have to re-sign with their teams for less because no other teams want to pony up + lose a pick. Odorizzi would be the team’s best starter by a landslide if he was signed but that doesn’t mean he’s worth losing a pick for. Depends on cost and what else is out there that wouldn’t require a lost pick.
  2. How is it nonsensical when qualified players are either not getting good deals in free agency or are waiting until June to sign the past few years?
  3. Dave Stewart doesn't count.
  4. I wouldn't be against trading Jansen, but trading him now might be selling low. However if you can get a capable big league starter in return for him right now, and then sign a catcher to partner with McGuire short term, that may not be a bad idea depending on the pitcher the Jays get back. If they trade Jansen and we have to witness McGuire/Maile all season, then I retract what I said as that would be pretty bad. Trade Jansen and signing Grandal would be much better.
  5. The only benefit to a potential Odorizzi signing is that the QO might scare teams off and the Jays could get him at a discounted price. Other than that I just feel like if we're finally going to sign a qualified FA it should be a chance at a home run. Wheeler is a potential home run. Odorizzi just seems really underwhelming when it comes at the cost of a pick and losing international money.
  6. Trade Jansen for pitching and sign a stopgap catcher to kill time until the Moreno/Kirk two headed monster show up?
  7. If we are going to lose a pick, and won’t be in on Cole/Strasburg, then Wheeler is the only pitcher I’d be ok with. Not Odorizzi.
  8. There's a pretty big difference between steroids and protein powder/creatine/vitamins, without even factoring the legality of it all.
  9. Conine in the top 10 is gross.
  10. Yeah, the Astros being cheaters is the least surprising baseball news ever.
  11. Akiyama makes more sense for the Jays. Apparently can play CF, is LH, and is a high OBP player. I read someone use Nori Aoki as a possible comp and that would be pretty good if he can handle CF.
  12. Agreed. There are a surplus of #3 level starters available in free agency. They won’t be cheap, but cost should be reasonable, and they’ll only cost money (not picks or players) which the Jays have to spend. Sign two of them and keep your best outfielder at the same time. Seems like a better strategy. No one is trading a young ace for Gurriel, so if we’d be getting back a cheap/young #3 starter, then keep Gurriel and just sign a veteran #3 caliber starter like Keuchel (for example). Seems more logical and less risky (young pitching prospects are dangerous to trade for).
  13. Maybe I'm more bullish on Gurriel than others, but I can see a 120-130 wRC+ bat in there. Only thing that might hold him back is lack of walks but he improved last season in that area. Statcast numbers suggest he's not fluking his way to good numbers. I mean if a team is offering a great package for him, then obviously you pay attention, but given his years of control and salary, I think he's closer to a core piece than he is an expendable one. The one downside is he appears to be injury prone. If the team determines that's going to continue going forward then maybe a trade makes more sense now (selling high).
  14. Don’t think there’s a chance in hell they move Gurriel. He makes nothing, he’s the only OF on the team who can hit, his statcast numbers are good, and no one internally is pushing to take over LF. Would make no sense. Obviously if they get an amazing return then it’s worth looking into, but I don’t see it.
  15. It depends on what the premium is. I don't think I'd go four years given his age + health history, but a high AAV on a 3 year deal would be perfectly reasonable, IMO. Or a vesting option for the 4th year based on health/innings. The other alternative would be to sign multiple middle tier starters who are a solid bet for a 2+ war (Keuchel, Gibson, Porcello types). You get more stability that way and less risk, but less upside/talent as well. Wheeler would be good too in isolation, but I just see the QO as something Shatkins would not want to mess around with. We are talking about overpaying a free agent, losing a high 2nd round pick (+ the draft pool that comes with it), and $500k in intl money. If the Jays don't feel they are one player away, and are coming off a season where they intentionally tanked, then giving all that up for a rotation upgrade makes little sense. The only exception would be if they signed Cole, which seems highly unlikely.
  16. I don't think a team that just spent an entire season tanking on purpose is going to want to lose a (high) 2nd round pick and $500k from their international draft pool. If it's for Cole, then sure, but I don't think they do that for anyone else. Ryu makes a lot of sense. Ceiling/performance of a top of the rotation starter, risky due to age/injury so years will be limited, and won't cost a pick/intl money.
  17. Yeah, I feel like paying Chase Anderson 1/9 (or 2/18 if option is picked up) before the off season even started is a sign that they'll spend a ton this winter. Well, a "ton" by Jays and today's MLB standards. You don't make that type of move this early if you're going to be frugal.
  18. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/pirates-considering-ben-cherington-as-baseball-operations-head.html Honestly surprised Cherington has lasted so long in Toronto. Figured he'd get another shot sooner or later. Hopefully the Pirates go with someone else.
  19. Tony Clark is the worst thing to happen to the player's association, and they are not bright enough to realize he's the problem (or at least the biggest one). Literally every CBA hurts the players more and more, and now he's fixating on collusion rather than trying to find a solution to the problem (hint: pay players more in years 0-6).
  20. The 2016 Jays gave up 12 runs in 5 ALCS games. They lost the series 4-1 and were outscored 8-12. It wasn't the pitching that hurt them that year. In 2015 they just ran into the BABIP golden boys, unfortunately. Having an ace is definitely going to help in trying to win a World Series, but the 2015-16 Jays could have won with what they had in the rotation. If anything, the one true ace they did have in those two playoff runs was the one we didn't want to see have the ball in his hands.
  21. The Jays were a .500ish team with a great run differential and two months left to make up some 7 or 8 games in the standings. It was far from the finishing touches to a team looking like a championship contender. It was a last ditch effort by a GM with one foot out the door that worked out better than anyone could have dreamed of. In hindsight, the Price deal was great. At the time, the Jays looked more likely to win a WC spot than the division, so there was definite risk involved.
  22. Archer will go the Astros and turn into Cole, most likely.
  23. I don't think the Pirates even have a GM yet, and when they hire one, it will likely be to cut payroll. He's coming off a down season too. Might be the perfect time to try to acquire him. Two more years left on his 'the Rays offered to violate me in my prime and I said yes' contract. Ideal for the Jays right now. If it doesn't require a top prospect, go for it.
  24. Torres at SS and DJL at 2B. They don't need Didi, and he'd probably accept.
