The non tender deadline will be interesting. Should be at least a few interesting arb3 players who become available.

Yeah, they had to re-sign Butler and Reddick even if they didn't want to pay for it. Instead they chose Harris and Horford. Defensively they should be good, but Simmons can't shoot, Embiid can't work off of Simmons because of that, and they don't have the shooting around those two to help either one.

The problem with the Sixers is that Simmons and Embiid don't mesh together at all. Without Butler there to create off the dribble for them, they'll find it difficult to score in the playoffs. What else can you say about the Raps? Don't have Lowry and Ibaka again, but still find a way to win. They have a legit 10 man rotation when those two come back (Lowry-FVV-OG-Pascal-Gasol starting and then Ibaka-Boucher-RHJ-Norm-Davis off the bench).

Yes free agents getting paid well is good for the game. Maybe it won't avoid an ugly labor dispute or work stoppage in two years, but it certainly won't hurt. Teams not trying to win is the biggest issue with the game right now aside from unfair pay for a player's early career (minors + first 6 years). Baseball will probably never be a mainstream sport again but it can still thrive as a regional sport if teams actually give a damn about trying to field a contender. Paying free agents rather than waiting until April to get them for pennies is a good start so far, even if it's only AA and the White Sox doing it so far.

November 6th headline: "MLBPA Announces Investigation into Alex Anthopoulos' Comments About Free Agency" November 24th tweet: "Atlanta has made three of the four free agent signings this winter and now guaranteed $69 million to d’Arnaud, Will Smith and Chris Martin." Hey, as long as the players are getting paid, that's all that matters.

Agreed. If the Jays were a middle of the order bat away from contention, then Edwin on a one year deal would make sense. That's not the case. I'm not particularly high on Fisher, Hernandez, Drury, McKinney, etc, and would get rid of them in a second to improve the quality of the roster, but reality is Atkins likes all of them and if even one of them turns into a late blooming core piece (or even a 2-3 win player), then that means more to the Jays than anything Edwin could possibly provide in 2020. Edwin is also 37 without the PED history (Cruz) so we can't just assume he's going to maintain his production. An alternative to signing a short term DH/1B is to trade for a blocked one in another org who may come cheaper because of it. Yankees have had some success with that recently. Someone like Dom Smith who is stuck behind Alonso in NY could be a reasonable trade target if you feel his 2019 turnaround is a sustainable change. I'm sure there are a bunch more on other teams. -
Abreu re-signs with the White Sox for 3/50. FA's getting paid so far, although it's only been two teams (Atlanta and White Sox).

It might be due to lack of options. The CF free agent market sucks, and they don't seem to want to trade any actual prospects, so acquiring one in a trade (unless it comes in return for Giles) seems unlikely. I came into the off season expecting status quo (Hernandez in CF), but then there seemed to be a lot of talk about the Jays looking to add an OF, so my expectations shifted. Now I have no idea what they have in mind.

This FA class is actually pretty good so wouldn't surprise me if most players end up getting paid well. We'll just have to wait a damn eternity for the signings to actually happen.

Grandal to the White Sox. Four years, $73 million. Good for him to get that money. The one year deal last year pays off.

Yeah, Mayza is going to miss all of 2020 and Shafer is not an asset. Don't mind those two being removed. There will be a lot of movement on the 40 man roster in the next few months as we add free agents, trades, etc.

The deal was mostly considered “light”, not bad. So I don’t think that’s changed. Should have gotten a 3rd piece but might end up looking good for the Jays anyway.

Based on what is out there, it appears Hatch is a lock to be kept, Espinal is very likely, and Wall/Palacios are borderline. As far as risks for being taken, mostly minor league RPs so nothing that stood out. The interesting part is that for every player they add they’ll need to drop someone. So who they drop will be something to watch for.

I think an ideal situation would be the bulk of the off season being done in Nov-Dec, and then a lull with deals here and there in Jan-Feb heading into spring training. Right now it's the opposite, with moves starting in Jan/Feb and bleeding into March-beyond, which makes the off season feel unbearably long. You want to feel some level of excitement about potential signings, trades, etc, . That just isn't there anymore. Some of that might be Boras having so many clients, and he waits and waits and waits before his clients sign, but obviously there is a larger problem within baseball that needs to be addressed in the next CBA. Seriously, it's almost Thanksgiving and so far we got the Chase Anderson trade, and two relievers signing with the Braves. I can't think of anything else that has happened. That's insane.

Yeah, no incentive for most teams to sign free agents when they don't value wins in 2020. I feel like the Jays can benefit from this the longer it drags on, but it's not going to make for a fun off season.

Agreed, this is terrible for the game. It's been 3 weeks into the off season and two relievers have signed (both with the Braves). That's it. Nothing else appears to be imminent (no rumors or anything). Plus most of the top FA's are connected to Boras, so lord knows when the first domino drops. It could be months from now.

Wells seems like a good dude so happy for him but man, every time I read his name it reminds me of how s***** and unmemorable the 2000's were for the Jays. As much as I rag on AA for his short sighted trades, I'm so glad that 2015-16 happened to wipe out so much irrelevancy from my memory. As great as Doc was he was pitching for teams that never sniffed the playoffs. Other than him and the first half of the 2000's with Delgado, it was a pretty brutal decade for the Jays from pretty much all angles. Even the uniforms sucked.

Even if a team offers a player with an additional year (expiring after 2020-21), they'll take it for Powell. They want to have a shot, even if it's a shot in the dark, at Giannis. Powell's deal is through 2021-22, which eats into the cap space for Giannis. They'd trade Powell in a second for anyone who expires a year before he does. Even if it's Redick's corpse, they'd do it. Don't think Masai will trade another pick, though. At least not to get rid of Powell. If it's for a real upgrade, then maybe, but even then we will need some cheap players on the roster two years from now if that cap space is going to come in handy.

They won't be in on Cole or Rendon, but my point was for where the Jays are right now, they need elite talent any way they can get it. If you're going to lose a pick, then lose it on an elite player. Not Odorizzi types. The one thing we know Atkins/his scouts can do at an elite level is draft. Don't mess with that just for a rotation improvement. Do it for a core player. MLBTR is predicting Ryu getting 3/54 and Keuchel getting 3/39 (probably on the low side there). Neither one costs a pick and would instantly upgrade the rotation just as much if not more than Odorizzi would have. Go for deals like that if you're avoiding the elite players. All it costs is money and the Jays have it to spend. Probably need to tack on an extra year or more AAV but I'm sure they have a threshold for what they consider to be reasonable. -

That's the way I see it. If we're going to lose a pick, go big. Go after Cole. Go after Rendon. Wheeler would be fine too on the less expensive end since he has the velocity and performance of a front end starter when healthy. He also didn't have 14 of his 30 starts against the AL Central in 2019 like Odorizzi did either. There has to be some level of expectation when signing a qualified FA. It can't be "this guy can help us in the next 3 years". It has to be "this guy is going to be one of the best players on our next competitive team" type of signings, and Odorizzi doesn't inspire that type of confidence in me. Not after one 4 win season and a history prior to that of 2ish war performance.
