  1. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/11/pirates-considering-ben-cherington-as-baseball-operations-head.html Honestly surprised Cherington has lasted so long in Toronto. Figured he'd get another shot sooner or later. Hopefully the Pirates go with someone else.
  2. Tony Clark is the worst thing to happen to the player's association, and they are not bright enough to realize he's the problem (or at least the biggest one). Literally every CBA hurts the players more and more, and now he's fixating on collusion rather than trying to find a solution to the problem (hint: pay players more in years 0-6).
  3. The 2016 Jays gave up 12 runs in 5 ALCS games. They lost the series 4-1 and were outscored 8-12. It wasn't the pitching that hurt them that year. In 2015 they just ran into the BABIP golden boys, unfortunately. Having an ace is definitely going to help in trying to win a World Series, but the 2015-16 Jays could have won with what they had in the rotation. If anything, the one true ace they did have in those two playoff runs was the one we didn't want to see have the ball in his hands.
  4. The Jays were a .500ish team with a great run differential and two months left to make up some 7 or 8 games in the standings. It was far from the finishing touches to a team looking like a championship contender. It was a last ditch effort by a GM with one foot out the door that worked out better than anyone could have dreamed of. In hindsight, the Price deal was great. At the time, the Jays looked more likely to win a WC spot than the division, so there was definite risk involved.
  5. Archer will go the Astros and turn into Cole, most likely.
  6. I don't think the Pirates even have a GM yet, and when they hire one, it will likely be to cut payroll. He's coming off a down season too. Might be the perfect time to try to acquire him. Two more years left on his 'the Rays offered to violate me in my prime and I said yes' contract. Ideal for the Jays right now. If it doesn't require a top prospect, go for it.
  7. Torres at SS and DJL at 2B. They don't need Didi, and he'd probably accept.
  8. Ryu is the best pitcher without a qualifying offer from the looks of it, so I would agree with this. I'd try to sign Ryu and then try to get a lottery ticket on a one year deal (Pineda, Salazar, Wacha). That covers all bases. A reliable average dependable innings guy (Anderson), someone who can be a top of the rotation starter at his best (Ryu), and then a complete shot in the dark with upside but can't rely on them (lottery ticket). Of course you could replace the latter with another innings eater if the price is reasonable and want to avoid risk. Either one is fine.
  9. Yeah I’m glad Tepera was dropped. Doesn’t save much $ but an extra 40 man roster spot is more valuable. Jays need to take advantage of how inexpensive free agency is now. Cleaning up the 40 man roster junk is imperative.
  10. Yes but they want to cut payroll. JDM opting in means they'll have to trade others (Betts).
  11. I was hoping the Red Sox held on to Dombrowski for a few more years, and hated that they replaced him with a Tampa guy, but JD Martinez showing that DD still has some fingerprints in Boston.
  12. I don't expect the Jays to sign anyone with a qualifying offer, but I don't think this trade really tells us anything except 1) Shatkins likes Anderson, and 2) they got him for a nothing prospect because they could afford to absorb his salary without having it impact the rest of their off season. Where the Jays might regret the trade is if the market for pitchers like him proves to be a lot cheaper than what they are going to pay him in 2020, but even then, no guarantee those pitchers sign with the Jays unless they overpay anyway, so it isn't a huge deal. If he sucks, then buy him out. If he's good, then either trade him or you have a solid back end starter for 2/18. Not much downside.
  13. Odorizzi is getting the qualifying offer. Cross him off the list (for the Jays).
  14. As a reliever, absolutely. No chance he can be a SP.
  15. Odorizzi at 3/45 (assuming no QO) and Gibson at 2/20 would be a no brainers. I suspect Odorizzi would get more than that.
  16. Shatkins is about 'spreading the risk'. Anderson is one piece to what will probably be a few other pieces added to the rotation. Whether those other pieces are significantly better than Anderson is the question.
  17. Spanberger going to the Brewers. I mean, giving up crap for a capable MLB starter is a pretty solid return, if not boring as hell. Hopefully the FIP beating is sustainable.
  18. Hmmm I thought he was arb eligible. That's more than I would have spent on Anderson, at least until I knew what the SP market was going to be like. Hopefully they didn't give up much.
  19. Surprised they traded for Anderson before the FA market began.
  20. Something to keep an eye on, there are going to be some non tenders and options not being picked up for players that can help the Jays. This is where free agency can be an asset.
  21. I think the Twins are a better example of what BTS is going for with signing vetrins. They got Cruz, Schoop, Perez, Marwin, etc, for reasonable prices in free agency. It's a good way to add depth. Most of the WAR will have to come from the young internal pieces though. Free agency is just the inexpensive depth option now, and maybe you get lucky with one FA overachieving.
  22. Harper's "bring a title back to DC" slip up is going to have some momentum in the next few days.
  23. Series definitely picked up in Games 6 and 7 after a dull first 5 games. Good for the Nats, and at least one ex-Jay did well (Hudson) after Smith and Osuna had rough outings. Finally the off season begins.
  24. No way I'm trusting Hudson to get the final 3 outs even with a 4 run lead. He had a decent season but nah. Stay with Corbin. He's dealing and it's only one more inning.
  25. I'm glad the umps are messing up at the biggest stage because hopefully that forces the league to finally change. Some of the called strikes have been ridiculous. Borderline is one thing, but some of these aren't even that.
