  1. Runs through 2020. He recently extended Atkins who also runs through 2020. Basically both the president and GM have a year left on their deals and not even a hint of an extension for either one. Rogers did the same thing to AA four years ago, then he went bananas at the trade deadline, got them to the playoffs, and rejected their contract offer. Not sure how this story ends but the longer Shapiro is without an extension the more likely it is that one or both parties likely does not want the marriage to continue.
  2. Maybe. Had no clue who he was until he was brought up a few pages ago. Who knows. Grain of salt required until we hear more noise from other sources.
  3. Jonah strikes again. Still don't know how credible this dude is, but seems like he isn't just a random guy, so take this for what it is.

Lowry actually did the Raps a favor, I think. There isn't a single team out there that will want to trade for an expiring contract this season. The FA market sucks in 2020. Everyone is saving up for the summer of 2021 when Giannis, Kawhi, LeBron, George, Beal, Oladipo, etc, are out there. So by getting an extra year of Lowry, he actually becomes a bigger trade piece because a contract that large that expires in 2021 will be more coveted. Not that I expect the Raptors to trade him since they will also presumably be looking to preserve cap space for the 2021 free agent market, but cap space for next season is meaningless. Might as well give Lowry a little bonus for the championship and keep the dream alive for 2021. If Lowry demanded a long term deal, then that's a different story. But one more year on top of his existing deal? Perfect for the Raptors.
  5. I'm too lazy to look up all the playoff teams, but the Yankees were 43-32 against plus .500 teams with a +41 run differential. Keep in mind, they had more injuries than practically every team, and they were turning the Gio Urshela's and Cameron Maybin's of the world into good players. There are levels to this. I said the same thing about the Indians last year who looked ordinary against good teams (I believe they were under .500 against them as well), and the Astros made quick work of them. The playoffs in baseball can be a crapshoot, but when there is a large discrepancy between the quality of two teams, the odds of an upset decrease even with luck factored in. Not impossible, but not as likely. I'm referring to a 5-7 game series, not a one game play in, obviously.
  6. They were 41-16 against CWS, DET, and KCR (47-16 counting the Orioles). They were 23-12 in one run games. They were 31-35 with a -43 run differential against plus .500 teams. I mean, the schedule is the schedule, so they deservedly won the Central, but I'm not buying that they were a great team. A good team, sure, but we saw what happened against a great team like the Yankees. A team with Odorizzi as their best SP (who had a really good year but come on) is not a legit top team. I hate the Rays, but I can concede that their pitching staff is really good and their coaching can manipulate situations to their advantage most of the time (openers, etc). The Twins are simply not in that class.
  7. As I said before, the Twins were a good team but vastly overrated due to their division. The Yankees got a lucky break by not getting home field. They got the easier ALDS opponent and homefield doesn't mean as much in baseball as it does in other sports. With that said, hopefully Cole shuts them down the next time.
  8. Yeah, Shapiro likely sets up the guidelines, Atkins has to make moves based on those guidelines, and Shapiro signs off on everything in the end. I don't think Shapiro has the low OBP/exit velocity/35% K% fetish, although I didn't pay close attention to his run in Cleveland, so who knows. Seems like Atkins and his crew handle the actual moves. I'm really curious to see how the Shapiro/Rogers thing plays out. If they really wanted him long term, a deal would have been agreed to already, or at least before the off season begins. Every time Shapiro is asked about it, he tap dances around it. Clearly if they let him walk, or he decides to leave, he would get a job pretty easily, so there's no real desperation on his part I'm sure. Ed Rogers hired Shapiro, so maybe we should trust his judgment, but he did try to tamper to get Kenny Williams and Dan Duquette before that, so it's kind of frightening to think about what the next Jays front office might look like if Shapiro leaves.
  9. JV on short rest might have been a bad move.
  10. If they extend Shapiro, I don't care what they do with the GM spot. Atkins hasn't been impressive, so they could easily upgrade that spot. But extending Shapiro is crucial. As long as they do that, whatever other changes are not as important. Put Cherington in Atkins' spot for all I care.
  11. After some digging.... Have no idea who the hell this guy is but he's followed by Davidi and Lott, if that means anything. I'm not believing anything until actual news comes out, but the lack of extension for Shapiro is still baffling to me. Either he wants out or Rogers wants him out. Something doesn't add up. Of course changes in management could mean anything.
  12. Honestly I think I trust Shatkins more with pitching acquisitions than hitting, so Merryweather might actually turn into something (even if it's out of the pen). Of course he has to be healthy for that.
  13. That's insane. Teams avoiding free agency is not the problem with baseball. It's minor league salaries and salaries for MLB players from years 0-6. It's a joke how MLB can get away with that. Doesn't help that Tony Clark appears to be clueless.
  14. Hurl showing more love for the Rays than all of Tampa combined.
  15. Nice. One more and the Rays/Twins are gone.
  16. It would probably take something crazy like 7/250 for him to come here, but man, what a f'n stud. He'd be perfect for this team. I mean he'd be perfect for every team, but especially a team with our payroll commitments (or lack thereof).
  17. Sign Gerrit Cole. Break the contract record for pitchers. Don’t care. Just make it happen. I don’t want the jays to make the playoffs again with the Twins pitching staff. Be great everywhere.
  18. Home runs, walks, and K's all night long. Even if this series ends in 3 games it will feel long.
  19. The Yankees, who could turn practically anyone into a good hitter, acquired Drury thinking they could fix him but then traded him within months. I truly want to believe he is a tweak away from being good, but I think it's far more likely he sucks. I think he's here for at least one more season though. He is s***, but versatile s***. Teoscar put up a 1.8 WAR from June onwards and he was playing CF almost exclusively during that time. I think the Jays roll with the same OF's next season, except with Fisher at DH (the OF's and Vlad will rotate through DH). Of course if they decide to add a OF from outside the org, then who the hell knows.
  20. If Shapiro's contract is not extended he'll find another job in 10 seconds. I don't think he's going to go full AA in 2020 to get an extension. Atkins is less likely to get another high profile job, but he works for Shapiro, so I wouldn't expect any 2013-15 type of reactionary moves. They wouldn't start a rebuild in 2019 and then completely go the other direction less than 12 months later. If Shapiro is not extended by the start of the season, then he's probably gone either way. I don't see why he'd have to prove himself to a bunch of suits who don't know anything about baseball, and if Rogers really wanted him long term they wouldn't let him dangle on the last year of his deal. Maybe they will want to save money on the next team prez. I hope not. Rogers got very lucky getting Shapiro in the first place. I shudder to think who they'd get to replace him. If Shatkins' job depends on the 2020 win/loss record then just replace them now and get it over with.
  21. I’m torn. I actually like the Braves as a team but AA winning a title (despite having nothing to do with the team’s core) would make Jays social media completely insufferable, and it’s bad enough as it is.
  22. There seems to be talk of the Mets trading Syndergaard in the winter. I don't think the Jays are ready to trade top prospects, but trading with Brody is too appealing not to at least kick the tires on.
  23. Wow, I didn't even think about the possibility of a Rays/Twins ALCS. I just always assumed the Yankees would win, and still feel that way, but it's baseball and anything can happen. Reruns of Growing Pains would get higher ratings than Rays/Twins.
  24. If the Rays beat the Astros, I'm done with baseball until the off season. I know people like to root for the "little guys" who succeed on small payrolls, but the Yankees/Astros has to be the ALCS. It's good of a matchup to not get.
