  1. I think he’s a big enough name now to still generate revenue/hype but without the “Babe Ruth” aura of being a two way player, it’s difficult to say how sustainable that is. As a great RF, he becomes a bit more human rather than the unicorn he has been.
  2. I’ve said before I think the Jays will end up with Soto if they don’t get Ohtani so this doesn’t surprise me. Whether this particular report was a leak by the Padres to sucker the Yankees to offer more is also possible.
  3. Bichette seems to want to test free agency, and Vlad wants an extension but isn’t worth giving one to yet (at least not for the money/years he’d want). There’s a good chance both are gone after 2025, so there should be some flexibility there from a payroll standpoint. Ohtani making $50m a year in his 30’s wouldn’t be ideal from a team building standpoint when he’s in his declining years but if you want elite free agents (and it doesn’t get more elite than him) then you kinda have to live with the dead money in the end. With that said, if the Jays pull off the miracle and sign Ohtani, then they need to step their player development game up. They’ll need some cheap young impact players to fill up some spots that they won’t have as much payroll room to fill via free agency.
  4. Latest from Rosenthal (re: Soto)
  5. A 12-13 year deal would take Ohtani to age 40-41, so there would definitely be some dead money in there unless he defies aging on top of all the other great things he can do, but he's not Pujols or Cabrera. Aside from his ability to pitch, he's also a great athlete, plus base runner, and if he needs to take a break from pitching then he can likely transition into a plus defensive OF for a few years, so he'll be able to provide value aside from his bat (which is elite). That's not even factoring the marketing aspect and how much he changes the Jays "brand". So yeah, if the Jays actually pull off this miracle and sign him, you can certainly dread what his production could look like in 2030-35, but I don't think too many Jays fans would care about that in 2023.
  6. I’m curious to see what he ends up signing for, or even where the offers are now. If the Jays are a finalist, then they’d have to be willing to go at least $500m, as I doubt they would have gotten this far if they weren’t willing to go there, but how much beyond that are they willing to go? I would think they’d have to beat the Dodgers offer by a decent amount to get him. Would Rogers go $600m plus? Regardless hopefully we have an answer by this weekend and the off season can finally progress. Five weeks of dead silence after a historically bad World Series kinda sucks.
  7. I’d still be shocked if he signs with anyone other than the Dodgers, but the longer this drags out is probably a good thing for the Jays/Cubs.
  8. In Passan's latest article (behind a paywall so I'm trusting Twitter/X to be accurate here) he confirms that the Dodgers, Jays, Cubs, and Angels are the teams still in the running for Ohtani, while the Rangers, Red Sox, and Mets are turning their attention to other players.
  9. It will sting more than it should mainly because Passan and Rosenthal confirmed that the Jays were dark horses in this, so it brought credibility to the idea that it could happen. Everything since then is just social media BS with trolls pretending they have sources and all that nonsense.
  10. The fact that the Jays are allegedly still in the running for Ohtani is an accomplishment in itself even if he signs elsewhere. At this rate I just want him to sign somewhere, Toronto or otherwise, just so the off season can finally get moving.
  11. Suarez would have been a solid stop gap, but if they are saving bullets for a chance at a bigger target (Ohtani, Soto, whoever) then he's too flawed to tie up payroll room on this early in the winter.
  12. I think Ohtani's deal will end up being closer to $600m than $500m. If he didn't have to miss 2024 as a pitcher and could have marketed himself as a two way player, then it would have cleared $600m, IMO. You're not going to see this type of FA for a long time. Between the uniqueness of his talent + the revenue he can generate, this will be a massive contract. Wouldn't shock me if there's an opt out after year 2 so he can re-enter the market in 2026 after presumably pitching an entire season in 2025, but that depends on what his goals are.
  13. Atkins mentioned keeping an eye on long term, so Tiedemann for Soto would conflict with that thinking, but I'm not sure they could get Soto and beat whatever the Yankees are offering without Tiedemann involved. If the Jays are legitimately in on Ohtani, which will be at least a $500m commitment, then I don't see why they couldn't reallocate that to Soto if they were to trade for him. Although with Boras involved, Soto is almost certainly testing free agency first, which would complicate things.
  14. This is my prediction as well. If the Jays miss on Ohtani, then they'll end up with Soto, though I do expect the cost to be something significant (Tiedemann), unless Preller is infatuated with Manoah.
  15. If Atkins can gain some good young players with post 2025 control in return then there’s definitely upside with a trade. Between the extra Wild Card spot and the Jays willingness to spend, keeping the train moving post 2025 is a much better alternative than going all in for 2024-25 and having to rebuild after. They always had to factor the balancing act between being competitive and building for the future. If they aren’t going to extend anyone (they don’t even want to extend Jansen from the sounds of it), and the farm system isn’t churning out talent like the O’s have recently, then they have to make trades like this eventually.
  16. Is there any team with more than one Japanese player on it? Jays have Kikuchi, Cubs have Suzuki, Mets have Senga, Red Sox have Yoshida, Padres have Darvish, and Ohtani/Maeda are FA’s. Can’t think of anyone else. Kooch better be putting in that work recruiting.
  17. If this is a Morosi generated rumor, then it's just him getting off on whatever engagement it leads to. In other words, the norm for him.
  18. Eugenio Suarez traded to the D-Backs.
  19. Yeah Bo on a long term deal is not going to end well for whoever signs him, IMO. His current performance, while excellent, is probably his ceiling, and he has a very risky offensive profile as he ages. I could see the logic in moving him whether he was difficult to sign or not, but once you factor in that he seems to want to test FA to maximize his earnings, it becomes a lot more justifiable to sell high. The issue for the Jays is they have a small window to contend right now so while moving him might make sense from a sustainability standpoint, it might hinder their ability to contend in 2024 depending on who they get back and/or who they get to replace him. Maybe you make a deal with the Cubs (Morel, etc) and then make a separate deal for someone like Willy Adames (who I'm assuming would be easier to extend but who knows), and the team wouldn't lose that much. I don't know, seems super unlikely that the Jays would do it, but who knows what's going on behind the scenes.
  20. Well if they want to move off the Vlad/Bo core then moving Bo makes more sense right now since the return would be remarkably better and he seems much more difficult to sign long term, but I can’t see a scenario where they trade him and the 2024 team is better because of it. There would have to be a lot more moving pieces involved. With that said, I highly doubt it happens this winter.
  21. With 4 years of control left and making the league minimum in 2024. At this rate ask for Jordan Walker in return and see what happens.
  22. Based on what the Cardinals have done so far, there’s no doubt that their interest in Manoah is genuine.
  23. Ohtani to the Dodgers is realistic/likely, but no way Moreno allows Trout to be traded to the Dodgers. I don't think Trout will be moved, but if he is, then it has Dave Dombrowski written all over it, and the location would make sense as well.
  24. Yeah this is not the market to go with multi year deals on non-Ohtani position player free agents, so if the Jays intend on making a "big splash", then Yamamoto (if Ohtani signs elsewhere) is the way to go. Then fill in the cracks with internal options or one year deals.
  25. Aka Morosi’s entire existence.
