  1. When Atkins is made aware that teams are in fact allowed to extend talent that they’ve developed, his mind will be blown. Hopefully Shapiro clues him in this winter. Vlad and Bo are understandable since they likely want $300M plus but extending Jansen should not be that complicated unless he doesn’t want to be here.
  2. The Angels will hold on to Ohtani even if they lose every game from now until the deadline. Morosi Tweeted about a potential trade because that's what he does to get clicks, but there was never any validity to it, not when Arte Moreno is involved.
  3. 8-1 and terrified of using Mitch White. If dude is still in the org when Ryu is activated then there’s some conspiracy s*** going on.
  4. Still shocked he wasn’t extended already. Hopefully it happens this winter. Kirk turning into s*** might expedite the process.
  5. Schneider probably sweating as he fights the urge to take Kikuchi out right now.
  6. This is his age 33 season and he’s locked up for ages 34-36. I think the days of him being a 4 WAR player are probably over regardless but now it’s a question of how much he’s going to decline and how quickly. If Atkins was let go, then it’s possible the new GM would try to off load that contract, but Atkins won’t.
  7. For what? Mitch White? Literally anyone else. Manoah should have stayed down and Francis started (now I guess put Ryu in place of Manoah).
  8. The Orioles keep calling up prospects without trades or injuries. They just cycle the playing time. The Jays prefer to play the starters are much as possible, which is fine, except one of them has a 74 wRC+ in LF and either needs a platoon partner or needs to be playing a lot less in general. Like I said, I'm curious to see what Atkins does. You have Orelvis, Barger, Schneider, and Horowitz who can all help the 2024 team. Schneider and Barger can probably help the 2023 team as well given they can play 2B/LF, and Varsho/Espinal/Biggio all kinda stink right now. Will they be used as trade bait or players the club will try to cycle onto the roster? I think the former is more likely than the latter with all of them except Orelvis (who I suspect they will keep and play at 3B at some point in 2024) but the others are questionable.
  9. I'm surprised and not surprised at the same time. Surprised since they need fresh arms, but not surprised since this team hasn't shown any sense of logic or urgency all season. Keeping ticking time bomb Manoah in the rotation and subsequently risking every game he starts, keeping White on the roster instead of Pearson, Francis, or really anyone else, and so on.
  10. Anderson had a 123 wRC+ from 2019-22 (1641 PA’s). It’s possible this is the beginning of a decline for him as a good player but the upside between him and Espinal is night and day. Atkins gave $18m to Semien and $9m to Belt, the latter being closer to Anderson’s situation (Belt was s*** in 2022 while Semien was a victim of small sample size in 2020). I’m not saying I want Anderson, all I’m saying is I think Atkins would probably do something like that if it made sense.
  11. Semien, Belt, Merrifield, Ray, Stripling, Matz, etc. I don’t think Anderson is a fit for the 2023 team but could definitely see Atkins getting him hoping for that bounce back. Trollosi mentioned the Jays interest so it’s probably clickbait anyway.
  12. Schneider did what he did in Game 2 of the WC series and Atkins was already writing the contract extension up before the game was over. Can’t blame Buntoyo and Schneider for essentially having the same weaknesses when they are likely just doing what the FO wants them to. We will have to live with this as long as Atkins is the GM, and hope the talent can overcome it.
  13. Who is even available in the pen aside from Mitch White who will only be in the game if it's a blowout? Cabrera, Mayza and Swanson?
  14. They are a tax team for the first time and barely holding on to a WC spot. Rogers might have a point here, for once. This is not the team to double down on. Only Ohtani would make a big enough difference to justify the added expense, and there’s like a 5% chance he’s actually traded (and I’m rounding up). It seems like the Jays finally have some prospects in AAA who are close, as well as Tiedemann when he’s healthy. If Atkins’ job is safe, and there’s no reason to believe it’s in danger, then he should have a longer term vision in mind here. They still have 2024-25 to add, and sprinkling in some prospects into big league holes is going to need to happen if they want to extend any sort of competitive window (and you know Rogers won’t want to rebuild after 2025). Add depth pieces, preferably controllable with upside, get into the playoffs, and then hope for the best.
  15. Yeah if the Varsho trade never happened, then I think re-signing KK would have been a real possibility, but no chance they do it now. The only way for Varsho to have any value on this team is to play a great CF and hope he has anything close to a 100 wRC+ bat. That's what they will do in 2024, for better or worse. As mentioned, I don't think Varsho is a lost cause in general, but in 2023? He's hurting the team badly and they need to do something with LF.
  16. Yeah if the Jays want to do anything in 2023, then KK has to be in CF and Varsho as far away from a starting spot as possible. He’s like Manoah in the sense that he should be better in 2024, hopefully, but he’s not going to help you now. Something is wrong with him.
  17. Springer is a guaranteed DP at this point.
  18. Varsho is going to have a wRC+ under 70 soon at this rate. If he has options left and can be sent down, then they really need to consider it. Even for a great CF that’s s***. In LF it’s horrendous.
  19. Trading Manoah now would be selling way low, and he’s still cheap enough to be a reclamation project next season. If someone values him like pre-2023 Manoah then you absolutely move him in a deal like that, but otherwise I’d hold and hope he bounces back next season. I actually think Tim Anderson is right up Atkins’ alley as far as pickups. Massive buy low due to horrendous 2023 so far and has a team option for 2024 so he’s controllable beyond this season. Whether it makes sense for the 2023 team is another story, but wouldn’t shock me if that’s where they go. There’s talk on Twitter that apparently Morosi mentioned the Jays having interest in Anderson (no idea if that’s true as I didn’t see it) but seems like the type of deal Atkins would make.
  20. Merrifield doesn't make that mistake.
  21. If the Jays lose this game, and they probably will, then I hope it’s an embarrassing one. Having Manoah start again when you are clinging to the last WC spot is insanity, and they should feel as embarrassed as they deserve to be. Best case the Jays offense scores like 12 runs and they win anyway, but I’m not holding my breath on that one.
  22. Horowitz has the offensive skill set that this org seems to like nowadays (low K’s, high contact). Normally I’d agree that he’s trade bait, and maybe he is, but it also wouldn’t shock me if they view him as a platoon DH next season. As bad as the season started for the farm system, they have 4 players who could conceivably contribute to the 2024 team (Orelvis, Barger, Horowitz, Schneider). My guess is Schneider is probably traded in the next 10 days, but curious to see how open the team is to playing prospects next season.
  23. With Manoah starting tomorrow, who is going to take the L and start the GDT?
  24. Jay Jackson going to be sent down to the minors with the quickness despite actually performing well.
  25. One of the few times I wish Rogers was still cheap. They are going to let Jimi’s option vest and pay him $6m next season so Schneider can keep using him like he’s an elite late inning reliever for yet another season. As far as this game, we just have to hope they are still holding on to a WC spot by the end of the Dodgers series.
