  1. If he can't stay healthy this year then likely his $10 mil option for next year will be declined. He'll sign somewhere and be converted to a reliever. Its unfortunately for him as he'd make a lot more money as a starter, and will take a pay cut to be a reliever.
  2. Tough few years for Curt, first his video game company goes bankrupt after releasing 1 game (which was actually pretty decent) and now cancer, sucks.
  3. Freeman contract was a calculated risk by Atlanta. If they waited another year they could have been looking at buying out his FA years at $30 mil instead of $22 or whatever it was here. With the amount of young talent they have they wanted long-term certainty on some. So they locked in Freeman long-term, and taking a wait and see approach with Heyward. Heyward is kinda boom or bust compared to Freeman. With Freeman you just need to keep getting these same type of years from him and the contract is fine. Going short-term on Heyward could backfire, he has higher a higher ceiling than Freeman just needs more consistency.
  4. I would break the 5 yr contract rule for Votto!
  5. Yes it is pretty sad to look at opening day payrolls throughout the league the past few years and see Toronto rise from about 8th lowest to 8th highest payroll, while bleeding prospects, with nothing to show for it. At this point we are chasing bad money with probably more bad money. Hopefully it works and if it doesn't AA can admit the team he built sucks, isn't working, and blows it up. If this team doesn't work we need to bottom it out again and try to trade a bunch of these guys to recoup the lost prospects, jump start the rebuild. It is crucial that these next few deals AA hands out are short term and reasonable so that they are movable for assets, so even if we aren't buying wins we are essentially buying prospects. If we don't make the playoffs (and a wild card game doesn't count) and don't blow it up, it will be another disaster of a year.
  6. I just don't think it has to be one extreme or the other. If the Cardinals or San Fran were my team I'd very much enjoy those championships. If you wouldn't I guess that's your prerogative. I understand the appreciation for the way Oakland and Tampa run their team, but given our market I don't think we should aspire to handicap ourselves the same way. We should be able to smartly build our team and have a reasonable payroll. It doesn't have to be a top 5 payroll, but I don't care to limit ourselves to a bottom 5 like Oakland and Tampa just for the challenge.
  7. I guess you want want a gold ribbon for participation then? Don't worry muffin you can still have some ice cream even if you don't win as long as you play nicely. I don't read much enjoyment on this board over how AA and Beeston have run this team, most of it seems to be angst. So your high horse can take a break. There are plenty of examples of organizations skillfully assembling a team that include FAs that have gone on to win championships, many of them recently. I don't care to handicap ourselves just to feel better about finishing close, like Oakland and Tampa.
  8. I would say fans spent years jealous of the Sox and Yankees buying their teams. People may wish we had Oaklands or Tamps mgmt team but those teams have no rings. They can pat themselves on the back for being smart all they want but if you don't have the cash to supplement your home grown talent with FA's then you wont win in this league.
  9. $10 mil over 2-3 years maybe?
  10. Honestly I am not sure on that, you are talking $30 mil for an unproven RP. Sure its turned out ok but if you think the guy is a RP he really isn't worth the risk.
  11. And you people questioned if Ryan Goins could stick...
  12. They have yet to announce one of the bubbleheads this year, maybe they are saving that announcement to spark ticket sales. After the pizza change it could be the biggest news of the off season.
  13. These are the days of our lives...
  14. I think they have more than 1 home game to sell. I don't think the home opener is much of any indication. Season tickets but also number of flex packs sold would be a stronger indicator. Its only anecdotal evidence, but I know many fans who feel they got burned last year on flex packs and are waiting for a reason to invest in them again.
  15. If we are talking multiple deals, I think the best is Burnett + Capuno both on 1 yr deals, maybe an option on Capuno. Then the only multi-year commitment could be Drew. The problem with Drew is the draft pick, and if the team craps the bed for whatever reason and you decide to sell off I think a guy like Ubaldo, depending on his performance and the deal, would have more value to recoup the lost prospect. Ubaldo is the riskier sign, compared to Drew (you pretty much know what you are going to get), but have the potential that his deal becomes a steal. A good combo would also be Ubaldo, Capuno, & Baker. Capuno is essentially a no brainer at something like $6 million, I think he is better than Happ @ $ 5.2 mil. I hate on Happ alot, but I do like him fine on the team if he is #6 (he is just over paid for that role). A guy like Rogers can play that role for much cheaper.
  16. I think Morrow if healthy should get the Dickey effect boost, but maybe thats a bad idea because he only has 1 more option year after this, don't want to set him up too much for a big pay day. But I'd like to see Morrow pitch well.
  17. booya who needs Kinsler when you got Morel.
  18. Texas saves almost $40 mil in guaranteed money and get a good bullpen piece back (who they could keep longer if desired) and deal from a position of surplus. Depending on how they would have spent that money it could have worked well for them, probably on a 1B/DH.
  19. I guess from a teams perspective the long-term injury risk of a long-term deal is simply replaced with the short-term risk of a sharp decline in ability of a 1 yr deal for these old guys. Even so it seems teams favour taking the long-term risk when you look at what guys like Kuroda, and potential Burnett, get versus Tanaka. I would favour the short-term risk because the downside is so much lower and the long-term upside is mitigated by the fact that you are free to sign another guy each year.
  20. Not saying they will, just that logically it would make more sense to give Burnett 25m over 1 yr than Tanaka $140 mil over 7 yrs. If anything I would expect Burnett to be equal to if not better than Tanaka next year and the 1 yr deal limits the risk significantly.
  21. Considering a guy like Tanaka gets $20 mil/yr over 7, gotta think a team would be willing to go upwards to $20 mil/1 yr for Burnett? Honestly the risk is so much lower on a 1 year deal that they really should be willing to offer Burnett upwards of $25-30.
  22. That is much better than my Romero for Uggla idea. Too bad Kinsler said no.
  23. boohoo for Arroyo, he has only made $71 million so far. He will probably top $100 mil for his career. Thats alot for what he essentially a league average SP. Maybe he should fire his agent, clearly he isn't saying the right things if 12 teams have asked about him but not followed up with an offer. Why is he looking for a 3 year deal? He can probably make just as much money on 2 1 yr deals (like Kuroda). Oh yes and referencing poor Lohse... another guy who has only made $67 mil to date with another $22 mil in waiting. He almost made it sound like it got so bad for Lohse that he had to wait in lines to get EI or something. I guess its just posturing, so I can understand it. But what a s***** fluff piece by Stark, is he always this lame?
