  1. Yes in retrospect really looks like an astute sell high by AA, even if we got nothing much of value back (though we should have just kept Napoli). The last 3 years, and the final year coming up, of his contract is definition of albatross contract. But at the time he was coming off a good 4+ war year, some GMs could have talked themselves into keeping him. If you look at what we paid him, and what we got out of him during his years here, he was a complete steal for the organization. If someone compiled a list of surplus value the Jays have received from a player he might be near the top.
  2. Yes but "he wasn't really bad" shouldn't pass a standard to be judged as a great Jay. He had 5 good to great years, and 4 mediocre to plain bad years. So overall he was a good player but not great regardless of his disastrous contract. Just never developed into the consistent and reliable 3/4 hitter we needed at the time he was here.
  3. Derek Holland slips on a dinky car at home and blows out his knee, out for at least half the year. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/01/derek-holland-out-until-midseason.html Texas back in the hunt for some starter help?
  4. Having been to San Diego in January... I agree with this. The weather in Canada stinks, BC is slightly better than average but still stinks.
  5. Sure MLB could tweak it a bit but these players declined a rather nice 1 year deal. They could have just accepted the money, it was a risk they took declining it.
  6. We should just get both if we want to be serious contenders.
  7. That looks good to me, the option probably need a 3M buyout to push the guaranteed dollars to $40mil/3. But my guess is to get him to Toronto will need to pay the full $14 mil per. But I very much like a 3 yr deal with 4th year option, maybe even a 5th year option? I like options.
  8. I don't think Rasmus look at anything under 4/60, and at his age its more likely 5/75. With a decent year he is looking 6/100 in the FA market.
  9. You would actually think it would give the jays more incentive to be good as the Jays/Rogers are the direct benefactor. For some of these other teams if they suck they still get their TV monies, making them less dependent on attendance and actual interest in the team especially if they sell their tickets regardless. Most networks would want the team to be good to increase viewership but lack the control to make it happen. Rogers has that same incentive if not more so with the potential of a whole country but also the control to try to make it happen.
  10. The Rasmus for Phillips swap just changes our hole from 2b to CF. I guess its a question of who'd you rather be starting, Gose at CF or Goins at 2b? At this point I'd rather go with Goins/Izzy to be honest, I like Rasmus in CF better than Phillips at 2b. But adding Bailey and signing Jimenez would be huge though, probably need to add Happ to this trade to unload some money. We'd definitely need too add some OF depth too.
  11. I see no reason not to believe the story. Why would they want to get rid of Hentgen, he was in charge of the one area of the team that actually excelled last year. They could have fired him when they fired all the other coaches if that's what they wanted. Not worth the time to come up with some conspiracy theory here.
  12. For the people who want a 200+ IP guy Santana is that, he has done it many times. Santana has been consistently better as well. Jimenez on the other hand is much better at keeping the ball in the park, he doesn't give up alot of HR and that includes a few years in Colorado.
  13. If true it is a little disappointing, I liked Rasmus and thought he turned a corner this year. I was hoping for an extension but if AA felt it out and thought it wasn't going to happen then moving him is the right thing to do. It does leave our OF really thin if Gose becomes the starter.
  14. I disagree completely. Look we have 2 200 IP starters, most rotations are jealous of that reliability. We have plenty of guys that can fill out a starting rotation between Happ, Redmond, and Rogers. Add in Stroman, Hutchinson, and Drabek which were not options last year and we have plenty of depth. Arroyo is nothing but a replacement level player in my opinion, we need to add wins. Compared to last year I would hope Dickey adds 1 win, MB stays the same, Morrow adds 2 wins, and we need another starter to add 2-3 wins above what we can currently expect from what we have. On the offensive side I'd hope for 1 win from Catcher, 1 from 2b (just because they can't be as bad), 1 win from Lawrie, 1 win from healthy Reyes, 1 from Melky being better. That's about 10-11 wins and enough to put us in contention. Beyond that it will be down to luck and statistical variances. Adding 2-3 wins at 2b would have be nice but doesn't seem to be in the cards.
  15. Really, we already have two 200+ IP guys on the roster. How many teams have three 200+ IP guys? Last year only 34 pitchers reached 200 IP, so just over 1 per team and we have 2. We need to add quality not a IP eater.
  16. When will this nightmare end.
  17. Baseball is not Basketball where you need 1-2 stars and the best way to get one to is to suck and draft one at the top of the lotto. There is no reason you can't be good and be building your prospect talent at the same time. The baseball draft, and internernation pools, are so deep there is no excuse. However, even well run teams like Oakland, St. Louis, Tampa occasionally supplement their team through free agency. Not all your talent is going to come together at the same time at all positions. Occasionally trading top prospects for the "final piece" might be worth it but the team needs to prove its on the cusp first.
  18. Couldn't this be easily expanded to what teams are still in play for Santana/Garza/Jimenez/Tanaka?
  19. Actually at this point he could have a terrible year at the plate is still be a 2 war player, and with the same odds could have a terrific year and be a 6 maybe even 7 war player. I would consider 4-5 war very much likely in a full season. He is probably the exact type of player you'd want to spend the money to extend. You should be very comfortable with a player where you can expect at least 2 war on a bad year, an average of 4 war a year, and the potential for some 5+ war seasons. With the type of contracts Ellsbury and Choo have got, I would expect it to cost somewhere around 5 x 15-17.5 to get it done.
  20. Not really, because of the difference in state taxes he will probably net more pay at 130 mil in Texas than 143 mil in NY.
  21. Yes will look silly to give Johnson away and not end up saving any money. Maybe AA was right and our cheap RP options will become more valuable on the trade market once all these expensive FAs are locked up. Gotta be some bullpens out there that are in need of bolstering. If we actually bring in 1 or 2 SP it would push Happ into the bullpen, giving us: Janssen Santos Delebar Cecil Wagner Loup McGowan Rogers Happ Thats 9 guys plus AAA depth like Stilson, Perez x2, Jeffress, and others. Something will need to give.
  22. Too many question marks there and not enough quality. It needs to be Dickey, Morrow, FA/Trade, MB, Hutchinson or Stroman to start the year if we want a serious shot at the playoffs. Happ/Rogers are fine as injury fillers only I don't see why Stroman needs AAA time, many pitchers skip AAA and he is a college kid that was expected to be close to ready when drafted. If anyone I think Hutchinson needs AAA time to prove himself ready to come back, he shouldn't be doing that at the MLB level on a competing team.
  23. I think he will end up around $145 mil over 7 and somewhere he actually wants to go. I would go no where near Cruz, we already have the Melkman.
  24. If you build it, he will come... If you sign no one else, Goins will start...
  25. Lets go Buff a lo! This guy could be a 2-3 WAR player at the AAA level next year.
