  1. I meant on if they are paying him interest on the deferred money. I think he would be stupid to have taken that much deferred without interest though. Ok there, they calculated it that it's worth 185m present value. So 7/185.
  2. Depends on actual inflation + interest they are paying him. Assuming 0% interest and an average inflation of 3% which is what the US has averaged the last 100 years per year, then take a look at this chart: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TLZYbwEh3cM/UQGqkSg-UrI/AAAAAAAABpQ/AqWlL0aKa50/s1600/What+Will+100+be+Worth+in+N+Years.jpg 100 dollars would be worth ~$65 in 15 years from now assuming those conditions, roughly a 35% decline. So, 30m would be worth about 19.5m or so in 14-15 years with no interest paid and if inflation was average.
  3. Time value of money makes the contract worth less, depending on if they are paying him interest or not.
  4. Well, there are people here who want Shields signed who is about in his mid 30s. It's all speculation on how he performs anyways. What I am seeing is the fact it gives Washington which already had a solid rotation another power arm and the ability to swap another pitcher for prospects. I also don't think they'd have a problem in 4 years trading him, at 34 years old he'll most likely still be performing at ace level. The way salaries are going, ~28m for him might not be so bad.
  5. They are in win now mode as well. I don't know what the details are on the contact in terms of no trade list, but what would stop them from trading him in 4 years from now and get prospects back? But if they are able to unload another pitcher for more prospects right now how can you not like the deal? Just trade Scherzer in 4-5 years for more prospects, there will always be a team willing to take him who will be in win now mode at that time. Apparently there are a lot of 'deferrals' as well.
  6. Nats are smart. Sign the best pitcher, then try to trade excess pitching to a team that can't really sign free agents like the Blue Jays. Just wish we'd use the same strategy so we could keep our prospects.
  7. Well, if Navarro gets swapped, you never know how Howard could perform being JUST a full time DH, not playing the field. For 5m/yr and if it only took a B prospect or a guy that doesn't fit in our plans, I'd take the chance. We already have decent obp guys 1-5. I think Howard could improve on his hitting numbers DHing full time, imo. He's a beast.
  8. I'd rather throw in another prospect or 2 and get a guy like Hamels then a 34 year old who is a FA at the year and should start seeing some decline in his game. I think this club has enough hitting now. Boston is still getting a #1 pitcher. I think we will see a regression in Buerhle this year, and we should target an ace with our prospects.
  9. He's most likely getting more than that. 4/80 would be a decent deal, and I would not complain if we signed him for that. We will have him for years 33/34/35/36. I wouldn't even add a 5th year option, no thank you if he wants 5.
  10. I would be very hesitant to give a 33 year old pitcher a 5 year deal. He's pitched 200+ innings a lot of seasons already. I could see his numbers falling off big time in his last 2 years when he's 36/37, just like it happens to most pitchers at that age.
  11. Except if a team has X dollars to spend, they usually leave a bit of breathing room. So 14m could really mean 10-11m, which should be enough for a closer and another reliever.
  12. Well I thought all the forex traders on here had it all figured out? lol With 9m left to spend, it definitely doesn't look like we're getting Shields
  13. Zobrist is 100% gone. He's 34 this year, and on the last year of his deal. I'm surprised he hasn't been traded already.
  14. I think Travis will be fine. How much better will Toritani be? No one knows, but Travis will likely earn a lot less. Every penny counts with the Jays. I would like to see a top end starter signed, I just don't know how much money they have. I know Travis only saw AA, but he's 23, time to rush him.
  15. A 33 year old with no mlb experience is not really something to hope for. Who knows how he will transition here, it's not like he's a 20 year old with a ton of upside either. 2B is not really a problem, you just need good D there, which we should have. The bigger issue is going to be signing a SP or trading for a #1/#2 guy. Toritani is not going to be a difference maker.
  16. Also happens to play in Miami, some of the hottest women in the world live and visit there. Good weather, hot chicks, palm trees, and he's rich. Lucky sob.
  17. I would have taken Romo and several other relievers who signed for similar amounts over Grilli.
  18. No but most likely it will require more than Sanchez. I think we need to save up for a nice young SP, save all those trade pieces.
  19. I respect your opinion, but a lot of MBL players fall off a cliff in their mid 30s, that's a fact. Zobrist will be 34 during the season. Not someone I am going to overpay for. I also take into account trade value. I think we learned our lesson for trading for older players. Also, if we wanted a plug at 2b, we had other options at the start of the offseason. I know you consider WAR the end all, but there are a lot more factors in it for me, like a player's age, years of control, trade value, etc..Like I said, I would rather keep our trade pieces and target for a #1 SP. I think the team has enough hitting at this point, do we want to end up like the Rangers back some time ago, all hitting? Cueto, was a 4.1 WAR last year, at this point, having a high pitcher war on the team is more important than another hitter, imo. Don't get me wrong, Zobrist is a great player, I just think a #1 sp helps this team a lot more right now.
  20. Zobrist is 33 years old, and will be 34 mid season. If we are going to use our trade chips to get someone, let's get a real ace pitcher in their prime. I'd rather save our trade pieces for a package for Cueto who most likely won't sign an extension in Cin. We could have bid on Kang or signed Lowrie if this team really wanted a plug at 2b.
  21. He signed in Houston, I'm pretty sure if there was any kind of reasonable offer from the Jays he would have taken it. I would have liked to have seen Romo sign here also. But, remember, AA said he had NO open offers to any free agents, so it's kind of hard to sign players with no offers, wouldn't you say?
  22. Who do you think the opening day starter will be then? Stroman?
  23. As a fan, does the team saving money really matter to you? It matters only if they plan on spending the saved money. Gregerson was the guy this team should have signed with that 'saved' money. A reliable reliever is what this team needed. Now, we have Navarro as a trade chip, but small chance we get someone like a Gregerson with him.
  24. I would have gone that route as well. Headley is good value, and that fixes the 2b problem as well. I also would have targeted a SP with that package because I'm sorry if I don't have faith in a 35 year old Buerhle and a 40 year old Dickey being the top end of your rotation.
