That would completely deplete the Jays system. On the one side, Papelbon/Hamels give the Jays a realistic chance of competing for a playoff spot. But those are moves that should have been made in the offseason without costing all the high end prospects the Jays have. I don't think it would be a wise gamble at this point considering they might possibly need 2 high end starters and not making the playoffs would set this team back quite a bit. -

Travis will most likely be one of the few bright spots in what will inevitably be another disappointing season for the Jays. -
Plenty of arms available next offseason as well. But that's the way the Jays work fyi. It's not like Reyes/MB weren't available as free agents just before the Jays traded for them.

The mayor of baltimore is a black female. It won't make a difference, these are people who are just looking for a reason to steal, protest, destroy and cause damage. The mayor also is not giving enough directive in terms of containing this and trying to speak out to the hooligans. But, regardless, I doubt any speech will have any impact on what is happening. 140+ cars torched, dozens of businesses looted and/or damaged, 19+ buildings sustaining structural damage, 15+ police officers injured. Good job Baltimore, I'm sure a lot of people will look to move there with their families when this is done, lol...

We knew this before the season started, yet it still wasn't addressed. To hope that rookies just pan out without slowly integrating them is a huge gamble. If you know a problem exists, and don't fix it, you have to logically assume that money was the reason why they didn't improve the BP.

You are assuming that money is available. If the money was, they would have signed 1-2 BP guys in the offseason.

You don't think if he could, he would have signed Shields + a BP arm? The only thing preventing him from doing that is the guy upstairs who set the budget. Granted other teams with smaller budgets look to have better all around teams, but that's what will happen when you don't trade off your stars to rebuild. So in that respect, we do need a GM who can manage quick rebuilds and trade older stars for high end prospects but I also blame Rogers for not putting in the extra $ this team needed to compete.

Well, then it has to be a budget issue because we knew the pen and SP were weak to begin with. Only certain posters here made 'projections' that everything was going to be ok because we had 'depth' but most of us wanted a legit #1 guy in the offseason, like Shields. How good would he have looked in a Jays uni?

Most likely not though. Don't judge how well a team is based on how they play the Jays. The jays have hitting just no pitching. I know a couple of sabermetric warriors here thought they had the team figured out based on projections but we all knew starting pitching and the BP were weak.
