  1. I can't imagine he's expensive, the Dodgers non-tendered him in November and he hadn't even hit arbitration yet...
  2. Like I've said, I think this team is a World Series contender as is, my concern is that they drain significant top-end prospect capital and/or spend enough that they cannot retain Vladdy/Bo. I'd like to see a second tier acquisition for 3B (Better than Villar, cheaper than Ramirez or Bryant), some minor league signings for depth, and maybe another bullpen arm or two. Also, Shatkins did a great job making improvements during the season last year, so if something isn't working, I'm sure they'll be able to patch it up as needed.
  3. Chatwood was tanking games for the Jays until early July; Dolis until August; Payamps until late June; Panik until late June; Zoinks last start was June 17th. There was a LOT of dead weight on the 2021 Jays.
  4. *Aggressively trying to dump bad contracts I suppose the Jays are "aggressively shopping" Randall Grichuk too?
  5. If Biggio was injured and out the whole season, we would most assuredly not be "f***ed". This is a very, very good team. Obviously health could be a factor, it could be for any team, but this was out starting rotation for opening day 2021: Hyun Jin Ryu, T.J. Zeuch, Steven Matz, Tanner Roark, Ross Stripling (Ray was on the IL). This was the bullpen for opening day 2021: Jordan Romano, Rafael Dolis, Ryan Borucki, Tyler Chatwood, David Phelps, Julian Merryweather, Tim Mayza, Trent Thornton, Joel Payamps So, we're down shitbags Zoinks and Roark from the rotation, and shittierbags Dolis, Chatwood, Payamps from the bullpen. We also are not rostering Joe Panik, and I cannot stress enough how much better that makes the 2022 team. There were a LOT more holes in the 2021 team than the 2022 team.
  6. Semien was great for the Jays last season, but losing 6.6 WAR isn't going to crush this team. A healthy Biggio likely puts up 3+ WAR over a full season at 2B. The Jays missed the playoffs last season because of the bullpen. Full stop. They have improved on that by leaps and bounds (much of it during the season last year), they have also shored up starting pitching for good measure. If we get someone like Chapman or Donaldson for prospects in the Van Eyk tier I'm good, but I'm really not interested in emptying the farm for Ramirez and his 2 years of control when we have a few promising MiLB guys who should be ready for a 3B job sooner rather than later, nor am I interested in signing someone to a monster 6 year deal when we have Vladdys and Bos to extend. With the obvious caveat of health, the team as constructed right now is a World Series contender, so adding bigger pieces is a nice luxury, not a necessity.
  7. Bunch of smaller moves today... Red Sox get Diekman (better than Strahm at least there) Dodgers signed Hanser Alberto (Maybe that takes them out on Villar if they just wanted a utility guy?) Cubs signed Jesse Chavez (who is freaking 38 now. Damn) Astros signed Lewis Brinson (MiLB deal) Rangers signed Matt Moore (MiLB deal) Nationals signed Ehire Adrianza Mets signed Adam Ottavino. It's a flurry alright, just not of big names (yet).
  8. Nothing that can be construed as "political", including but not limited to thoughts on vaccines, mandates, or covid in general. No need for that on a baseball forum. This topic specifically relates to how it will impact baseball, and anything that's not specifically related to baseball is going to be deleted (whether or not I agree with the position). Politics and this forum have a dicey history and we made the decision to eliminate it (as best we can) rather than let it spiral out of control again.
  9. Disagree. I think adding a decent 5th starter has more value than upgrading on Espinal/Smith. While I think Stripling/Pearson should be more than adequate, there's no way we're getting through a full season (with a short spring) only needing 5 starters. Team is going to score enough runs to win (almost) every game as currently constructed, but as you rightly pointed out, the pitching (specifically bullpen) had issues and let us down in 2021.
  10. You are correct, deleted a couple of posts.
  11. I like our Vasquez move over this.
  12. I honestly cannot see a scenario (barring injury or moving him from 2B) where Biggio isn't considerably more valuable than Villar. I think Espinal and Villar are probably about even (age and cost gives the edge to Espinal) and if Smith can translate his AAA numbers to the majors, he could be the best of the bunch (though, so far he has had just a miserable time against MLB pitching). I just don't see why he'd be worth a roster spot (and losing someone from the 40 man) over those guys. He's not BAD per se, he's just redundant for the Jays.
  13. It's not hate, it's not understanding what he would bring to the Jays as the roster is currently constructed. If we needed a bench infielder, I'd be fine with Villar, but we do not.
  14. Donaldson was traded to, and from the Jays, he really didn't have a whole lot of say in the matter.
  15. While it would be nice to replace Semien's bat, I don't actually think this team as currently constructed NEEDS to do that. Springer Bichette Teo Vladdy Lourdes Biggio Jansen/Kirk Espinal Grichuk/Smith/Palacios That's a lineup that will score some runs. I disagree with the idea that we won't be right in the thick of the playoff race if we don't get another bat.
  16. I could get behind Chapman at fire sale price...
  17. And a dirty Mexican to boot!
  18. I'm not even basing my opinion of a Villar signing on his time here... I just don't think he has a skill set that we need, Espinal is just as good, younger, and cheaper than Villar for that role, and we have a couple of guys (Smith in particular) knocking at the door for infield utility. I'm not adding a 2 WAR guy to our infield if I'm the Jays FO. I'm either getting a significant upgrade at 3B, or I'm focusing elsewhere.
  19. I'd honestly prefer no moves to signing Villar. I would bet that Espinal puts up better numbers than him this year.
  20. I'm going to pass on selling low on Pearson, thanks.
  21. This is a decent stability move. I hope Pearson grabs a rotation spot and runs with it, but sadly that's not a given at this point so I like having 5 guys we can run out there that aren't fully JoshTowersesque.
  22. We are getting perilously close to making this thread overtly political. I will leave the current "political" posts for now, but any more opinions on the validity of the mandate will be removed, and the person making the post will be deemed very naughty. This is NOT a place to discuss your feelings about mandates, vaccines, or Covid. Consider this a final warning.
  23. Steib would 100% be in the hall if his career happened a couple of decades later, and he's a lock for my Rushmore (along with Halladay). I'm still mulling the last 2 over, lots of excellent candidates after those two.
