I don't think the "we have to beat an offer because nobody wants to come here" thing applies in this case (or possibly not at all anymore, given that the Jays are considered serious playoff contenders now). Freeman's parents are both from Ontario, and he's presumably spent a lot of time here, so it's not like he needs an incentive to come to a "foreign" country.
I mean, all things being equal, I think the Jays are just as highly regarded as a destination as anywhere else in baseball right now, particularly for someone with Freeman's background.
