I don't really see how this is a sell high on Hendriks. If he had been used as a closer and his value had been boosted that way, there would have been a sell high opportunity but as it is, it's actually a terrific buy low for the A's who recognized correctly that there was some seriously underused talent here. At worst, the A's have a terrific reliever that they could give way more leverage too than the Jays did or they might quite possibly have a starter of similar calibre to Chavez at less cost and with many more years of control. Chavez could work out fine for the Jays in his one season but the A's could end up with an absolute steal.

Gibbons wasn't using Hendriks properly and keeping Gibbons around in what was an otherwise tumultuous off-season is probably a good move to give the players a sense of continuity and make them happy. Because of all this it's probably for the best to cash in a good player who might have been wasted again but that being said we have to be prepared for Oakland to make Gibby and the Jays looks silly if and when they do use Hendriks properly. Chavez is not nothing. He will contribute significantly but Hendriks will probably contribute more for Oakland. He might even do it as soon as year one.

Could work out well for us, could work out really, really well for Oakland. I like Chavez but I'm not so sure Oakland will miss him at all if they use Hendriks in his role.

Since you're potentially competing against American teams for top executives, coaches and managers, USD would make sense for the same reason that players are paid in USD.

IIRC, the fund was eliminated when the Jays started spending over slot on minor league draftees.

Yeah I think given the exchange rate and knowing that the optics would be very bad on a payroll decrease, I think expecting the payroll to be about the same or slightly higher is a fairly reasonable expectation. It's also happens to be the figure that's been reported. If you're going to make an assumption on payroll at all then it certainly seems like the one to make. Nobody will get upset if it turns out to be higher but I don't see the argument for expecting much more right now.

There are probably several guys out there who could learn to catch the knuckleball competently if given the opportunity but those opportunities are few and far between. Kratz is the most obvious name out there because he had a spring training with R.A. and reportedly was doing well and was close to stealing the Thole job. Otherwise, I would think what you're looking for is someone who is nice and quiet behind the plate. Last thing you want is someone who stabs at the ball so I would think that catchers who are good framers are probably good at catching the knuckler. Off the top of my head, if I was targeting a guy who hasn't caught it but looks like he could do it, I'd probably say Martin Maldonado.

If the idea is to just train someone into the job, can't it be someone better than A.J. Jimenez? He was about as bad as Thole offensively in AAA. Might as well go with Thole and save yourself the work.

It's an assumption. If you have evidence that would support a different assumption, go right ahead and provide it. Otherwise it just seems like you're being argumentative.

I don't think the game cares as much about Ortiz as it does about Jeter and I fully expect Ortiz to whine about it.

McGriff has a good batting average and hit homeruns. Most fans loved him except for a few morons who thought he wasn't clutch because of a September homerun drought in 1989. For the most part he wasn't underrated when still a Jay. The problem is that because he was traded before the World Series, he was quickly fogotten/overlooked by many but not all. I wasn't a very sophisticated fan by any stretch but even back then it wasn't hard for me to tell that he was a better hitter than Joe Carter.
