  1. I honestly think it's the marketing Laika. My bisexual great aunt who lives in the Yellow Knife loves basketball, but just can't relate because she doesn't really see a lot woods people in the Raptors ads. Believe it or not she has a hoop, she coach's a local team of kids, and she wanted to marry Larry Bird (keep in mind she goes both ways). She was so excited in '95 when the Raptors came. However over the years though she has been turned off by the Gangster marketing. They don't relate to Gangsters in Yellowknife. She also hates the Red Sox and told me they were the worst organization in baseball and that they were gangster culture too, just like the Raptors. I didn't believe her, but then it turned out David Ortiz got shot because he was hanging with too many Gangsters. Wow.
  2. Just scanned Twitter for the latest Blue Jays news 1. Nate Pearson - 2 innings, 4 ks. That's a lot of innings this early for a guy they plan to use in relief. Maybe it will be creative long relief and he gets 100 innings and fills in for injured guys and piggy backs. That would be cool to see. 2. Mike Wilner still wearing a mask - Please no politics. Not political. Just reporting that Wilner is keeping himself safe. 3. Bird opposite field homerun - That was yesterday but just saw the video. Very talented guy.
  3. I 100% agree and should have said that Bird 19 through age 22 was an interesting hitter. Clearly better than Hernandez or Gurriel thorugh age 22, and it would be awesome if that talent showed up at 29. Awesome but very unlikely, because I can think of a few guys who "figured it out" at 29, but am struggling to remember super-injured guys who got magically healthy at 29... maybe I forget them though.
  4. Would anybody give Kirk 150 games? 100 at Dh 50 at Catcher? I think I would.
  5. Maybe the second most talented hitter on the Jays is Kirk then. Though Charlie is like 'Fightin' for a job. Kirk fightin' for a job with Reese. We'll see.' hmmm... that stupid missing season screws everything up. Kirk looked great at 20... then we don't have a 21 for him, and he was injured half the time last year, and was sharing second catcher with Reese some of the other time. Not a lot of data.
  6. I see what you are saying. However Brett Wallace was a level below Bird. Wallace had pedestrian numbers in Vegas and other PCL parks at 22 and 23 and bad k/bb. Bird was promoted to MLB at 22 and did great in a tough pennant race.
  7. If you compare Bird vs. George Springer age 19-24, Bird was ahead until 22 at which point he broke If you compare Bird vs. Bo Bichette age by age... Bird is probably ahead every year... I mean Bird had a great eye. Bird broke. He has talent and he broke. Not saying he's fixable but he did have talent.
  8. ? I don't understand your comment Bird hit .337 .450 .480 or so as a 19 year old in low A. .288 .428 .511 as a 20 year old. Was decent as a 21 and 22 year old in the upper minors. And hit very well in the 2015 Pennant race as a 22 year old. No one else on the Jays was that good from 19 to 22. Can't accomplish that without a lot of talent. Since then he's been injured for 7 years. He sucks because he is injured, may never be healthy, late in the game for him now, but he does have talent.
  9. If he's actually healthy he should be. Guy is the second most talented hitter on the team. In his early 20s he was 1 level below Vlad, one level above Bo... Great patience, nice power, dynamite minor league numbers, mashed in a pennant race at age 22 in 2015. Don't get me wrong. He might be permanently broken now I don't know... but his raw natural talent is very good. There are examples of guys breaking out at 29... though mostly strugglers like Bautista, EE, Cruz who found it. Not sure if there are examples of med-tent injury cases coming back at 29. Anyone know of any?
  10. He has great natural strength and hand eye coordination. The issue in 2019/2020 was that he was so obese that he looked unbalanced and that bat looked slow. 2018/2021 he was a bit pudgy but the gut wasn't so big that it wrecked his balance. Did he play last year at 260 and is now 240? How fat was he in 2020? Like 280?
  11. Disrespectful posts should not be allowed, that's fine. However respectful discussion of whether baseball players should be mandated to take the vaccine is an issue which will effect the Blue Jays W/L? Fair game I would hope. I agree Boxcar didn't read Laika's post. Laika said 'If the vaccine only reduces cases by 20% it's still worth it', not that he knew for sure the number is 20%. On the other hand a hypothetical vaccine that is 20% effective and had some side effects might not be even be approved. And the question as to whether it should be mandated would get trickier. The vaccine causes a small number of heart issues, however Covid causes a greater number of heart issues (remember Eduardo Rodriquez). If vaccine is 95% effective cost/benefit on the side of the vaccine. If the vaccine is 20% effective cost/benefit could change. I don't know the exact numbers, just that if efficacy goes down from 95% to 20% cost benefit changes.
  12. Aaron Judge has had Covid so has some immunity (he could get it again, just like a vaxed person can get it), is presumably tested all the time, would be tested twice as much if he came to Canada and would be confined to his room. People are making a flawed argument. If there was some player, that was completely Covid naive, not being tested for Covid, allowed to go out on the town, would that guy be a danger to the community? Probably. Some guy, has had Covid, tested every day, confined to his room, and all at risk people in the community double boosted. Is that guy a risk to the community?
  13. Donaldson, Tulo, Travis, Smoak - I think the first three played 160 games between them while Smoak replaced EEs production in an amazing year. Would have been interesting if Tulo and Travis weren't glass Olerud, Alomar, Fernandez, Sprague - hmmm Olerud, Alomar, Fernandez, Molitor - This infield played together 2 games in Philadelphia in October 1993. 22-23 fWAR in 1993 with Fernandez only there 2/3 of the season, and Molitor getting a huge hit for being a DH most of the time. There it is. Greatest infield of all time, estimated 26 WAR if they played together for a full season John Olerud Paul Molitor Tony Fernandez Roberto Alomar
  14. Amazing how many people were worried about the 14 wins 'lost' because of Ray and Semien, and ironically they are now projected to win more than last year. Team is pretty much where it ended last year, except now have multiple years of control over all the key players.
  15. I see what you are saying. I agree the 200 ks are a bit worrisome. Otherwise Chapman is an ideal bounce back candidate and replacement for Semien. The sum of the off-season now replaces Ray/Matz/Semien with players with very close 2022 projections. While Chapman might seem like a risk he also has huge reward. Not hard seeing him hit .250 and power explode in Toronto and be back to 7 WAR level.
  16. Escobar in an good year had a .314 on base percentage, Chapman in an down year had a .314 on base percentage. Chapman is basically Josh Donaldson after 2014 or Semien after 2020 with a higher k-rate. I'm not saying the k-rate isn't important, because it can indicate underlying issues and will likely prevent him from hitting .290 like Donaldson did when he came here. Still projected 1.5-2 wins higher than Escobar.
  17. But the locker room is indoors. No idea what the politics of the NY City Council is like. Could be they will hold their ground on this. Doubt Judge or other players will... though Irving did.
  18. The DH spot was awful last year, probably the Jays worst position, well that and third, Probably not repeatable. Most of the damage was done by Springer and Gurriel DHing while injured, Rowdy sucking and Randall Grichuk getting DH at bats. If it is going to be 'Rotating DH', need to make sure Grichuk and McGuire are like the 11th and 12th guys in line for at bats. Don't want them to get Dh at bats, or get extra at bats when someone else is rotated into DH.
  19. That doesn't solve it because then you have a worse problem Red Sox 91-71-0 Points 273 Jays 90-70-2 Points 272 In this case the Red Sox beat the Jays, who had no opportunity to resolve the tied games. And do people really want baseball teams having 270 points? A history of baseballs best teams... The 1998 Yankees with 342 points are second only to the 2001 Mariners with 348 points. Modern teams rarely get more than 325 points, because the tie is only worth 1 point. I'm not even strongly for the ghost rule, just amazed at the other hokey rules people would be willing to have instead.
  20. Each team is playing under the same conditions. You can only win the game with a bloop single, if your reliever stops the other team from scoring with 0-out and a runner on second. So yes. The win with a bloop single is deserved, because it's not just the bloop single that won it.
  21. I am fully vaxed and got Covid from another fully vaxed person. I'm just a sample size of 1, but given the size of the Winter wave, even in highly vaxed places it's obviously spreading among vaxed. It's a complicated discussion... if the board isn't having vaccine discussions that's fine, but all the pro-mandate posts should be deleted too.
  22. He's not stating facts. It's too political and should be deleted. Otherwise we are in the situation where some political posts are OK (if you are on a certain side) but presenting data to refute that side isn't OK. It's a complicated discussion, which the board has chosen not to dive into. That should mean all vaccine related posts are deleted, not just anti-mandate posters (I haven't seen many on the board who are anti-vax, a lot of vaxed but anti-mandate posters here, but they aren't allowed to speak, so pro-mandate posts should also be deleted). Your post should be deleted too. And mine. No politics means no politics, unless the rule is 'no politics to the right of Trudeau'
  23. I have to think over the winter a significant percentage of the hold-outs got the shot. Does Canada still count one shot of J&J ?? It's a rough vaccine for some, and I can see why an athlete may not have wanted to get it mid-season.
  24. The playoff race is heating up. It's down to the Jays and the hated Red Sox for the last spot. And Verdugo drives one the other way! Over the monster. That ties the game 2-2 and this is the tie that the Red Sox need to make the playoffs Sox 86-58-16 Jays 88-62-12 But Buck! Jays had 2 more wins? How can Red Sox beat them? Well Pat, it's very complicated but Red sox had 4 more ties and hold the tie breakers. So they make the playoffs on Verdugo's tieing homerun that chinches the tie that clinches the tie breaker that gets the Red Sox into the playoffs.
