Tie breaker is when he returns. Sent down May 12th 4:35 p.m. Return Date September 1st. Tie Breaker 2 Predict the Rookie of the Year that gets the stats we wish Vlad had... Michael Chavis - .320 29 91

I can't ever remember a group of young players collectively playing this bad. I don't know what to make of it. This wave of young players consists of Guerrero, Bichette, Biggio, Jansen, Tellez, Gurriel, McKinney, Hernandez and Alford. Let's say the following happens. a) Guerrero and Jansen reverse their small sample size disaster and are 92% of what we expect. Bichette and Biggio get off on the right foot c) Tellez stays steady d) Out of Gurriel, McKinney and Hernandez, someone becomes slightly below average (like a .270 .310 .430 hitter). e) forget Alford, Todd was right. If the above happen all of sudden that's an enjoyable young team.

I don't remember how high he got... I remember he hit a homerun his first game (first pitch I think) and started off hot. I also remember an inside the park grand slam... Looking at bbref, his minor league numbers seem mediocre. So maybe the hype was mostly because of his hot start. He did well in 1990 too. Then was traded for Devo. I remember there being questions about his age.

Probably meaningless but my casual friends hate Shapiro - They say things like... "I won't go to a game until Shapiro is gone" "I bought an Atlanta Braves Jersey" "Vlad is the only prospect they have and AA drafted him" "If AA was here Vlad wouldn't be struggling" "Donaldson and Tulo got injured because Shapiro hired a bad training staff" "Shapiro is so arrogant, I'll never by a ticket until he's gone"
-
Good news bad news: Bad news first: Vlad's numbers are not distinguishable from Alen Hansons. They are the same. Very much the same. Good news: Vlad's exit velocities are much higher than Hanson's. Hanson is only competive with Vlad because he gets the ball in the air more. I guess it's hard to tell from the game feed, but when he doesn't strike out he's hitting fearsome choppers at the infielders... fearsome choppers.
-
Good point about Gonzalez. I totally forgot about him. He was rated higher than Jeter that year.
-
Probably not but until we get some Valdimir bombs, or at least interestingly hard hit fly balls or something we will live in the past with Snider highlights. Vladimir Guerrero JR has as of May 7th 2019 a) reportedly hit his choppers with high exit velocity hit a tremendous chopper down the right field line for a double c) hit a 335 foot fly ball down the left field line which hung up long enough that it was caught (nice catch). Travis Snider has hit many balls hard, many booming drives, many high flies (though not as many as we wanted) Here is his first MLB hit a 397 foot booming drive to left center in Yankee Stadium. If you listen closely you can hear Murph say "We told that f***er to pull it, little s*** didn't listen"
-
For a few more days at least. When will Vladimir Guerrero JR have a higher career OPS then Travis Snider?? When will Vladimir Guerrero JR hava a higher career OPS then Michael Chavis?? More importantly Will Vlad hit ball in the air soon? Will he get his ground ball percentage below 70% ?? Will he get his grounder to fly ball ratio under 5.0 ?? Will he stop striking out every game?? Do the Umps hate him??
-
Since Vlad can't get the ball in the air when he isn't striking out we don't have many great Vladimir memories yet.. though the chopper down the first base line, and the one he got in the air that was caught with a nice play at 335 feet were kind of cool... but nothing like this

Jays hadn't really been burned by a high profile prospect failure until Snider. Snider started hot but had injury problems and potentially mental issues... I remember him talking a bit about anger management and anxiety stuff. Snider also had a warning flag (high strikeout rate in the minors) that Vlad doesn't have. Carlos Delgado struggled mightily for 2 years after a hot start. It took him a couple of years to win a job, and really four years to become a great hitter. Shawn Green had the most similar start to Vladdy At about this point Cito had seen enough and he got sent down! Came back the next year, and didn't really break out until he found a manager that didn't like platooning. Biggest Dissapointment in Blue Jays history through 30 at bats 1. Vladimir Guerrero JR 2. Shawn Green Any other candidates??
-
That would be an unusual trade. I can't think of many cases where a non-contender trades one of their better prospects mid season... I'd have to think at this point with questions surrounding Gurriel at second, and questions surrounding the two corner outfielders, and Biggio's approach looking for good in aaa, he's the leading contender to fill one of those positions long term.
-
The chances he'll have to be sent down are non-zero. If this continues he has another 2 or 3 weeks. NOTE I said "IF THIS CONTINUES". No player would be kept up after going a month striking out once a game with a .150 average and a 75% ground ball rate. Note before flaming me.... Based on his minor league numbers and scouting reports this won't continue unless there is a mental issue or undisclosed injury.
-
I think the truth is about half way in between. He hasn't been given much to hit and he's chased. He should be talking more walks and waiting for his pitch. The few good pitches he's gotten he seems to have fouled off or swung through. His ground ball rate would be a historic record and if he had a good on base guy in front him he'd have about 80 double plays if that continued. He hasn't hit a popup. He's hit maybe 3 fly balls a couple of line drives, 10 or so ks, and what... 15-20 chopping grounders?? Even 4/5 hits I believe have been chopping grounders that snuck though or the infielder bobbled.

Carlos... as you have caught on the hive mind is a type of NPC. Hive mind - bunting = bad = -1/8977 runs. Question - what about win expectency of the bunt of a 2-2 game in the 8th inning, with McKinney, Maile, and Sogard coming up, and considering their 5 year regressed minor league and major league stats? Hive mind - computing... computing... bunt = -1/8977 runs. bunting = bad. Question - OK... so if the manager is this stupid do you think it has an effect on other things like hitting approach?? Hive mind - computing... computing... computing... manager effect on hitting approach and mechanics = 0.000 runs per game run(insult) -

Poor BBBB partly gets it. 1. There is an ebb and a flow. The flyball revolution is very 2015. Today's revolution isn't known to the general public yet. 2. The Rays, who ironically BBBB doesn't seem to like, but the Hive does, are usually, one step ahead. As are the Yankees and Red Sox (led by Wall Street analysists turned baseball data analysts). 3. To implement the latest and greatest strategy the coaching staff needs to be intelligent or at least obedient. 4. We, the people, do not know the new inefficiencies yet, if we did they'd be public knowledge not inefficiencies. 5. The fact that the team is bunting too much may indicate a lack of intelligence on the part of the coaching staff. 6. If 5. is true, the concern isn't the 10 runs lost from bunting, but the hidden losses from being non-intelligent and behind the curve. 7. As fans (see 4) we don't know the latest and greatest trends yet, we can potentially use terrible hitting stats combined with love of bunting, as a proxy that indicates the Jays coaching staff doesn't know the latest and greatest trends in hitting mechanics and pitch sequencing yet either. -

It's not about pretty pictures. If you want to bring Olerud into it that's great. However let's keep in mind the topic The Topic: Whether coaches can influence player performance and if so how much?? Out of touch Olerud reference: Rather than just a baseball card I suggest digging up old articles about the Cito Gaston/John Olerud/Tom Robson saga, the introduction to Tom Robson's hitting book is a good reference, as is this 20 year old article. https://nypost.com/1999/06/07/olerud-i-wuz-robbed/ More relevant info: If you want to bring the conversation into the present, references to "post flyball revolution" data analysis and hitting approach will be useful. We are post flyball revolution. Whatever adjustments are being made right now, may not be obvious to the general public for a couple of years. If the coaching staff are village idiots how can they be on top of the latest trends?? -

I'm not just talking about Guerrero. McKinney, Jansen, Gurriel, Hernandez, Drury have been struggling for 5 weeks. Tellez is hitting but with a bad k/bb. The other day, when Houston was playing, the announcers were claiming that Houston has made a lot of adjustments "post fly ball revolution". That is the opposing pitchers have adjusted their approach to the fly ball revolution and the Houston coaching staff has their hitters making other adjustments to counter that. If, Montoya and the coaching staff, are indeed village idiots (I think the jury is still out) that can't handle lineups and game strategy, would they be able to handle data based hitting approach adjustments? -

You don't think major league players get instruction, both good and bad from coaches?? https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/sports/mlb-launch-angles-story/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.029bb7ebe0c1 We are now post-fly-ball revolution. It seems people on this thread think a) a coach would be old school enough to advocate bunting and PR when the numbers say other wise but... it's totally out of the question that a coach would give outdated hitting advice.... It's a game of adjustments even on a league wide basis, and it seems well within the realm of possibility that a bad coaching staff/data analytics group could miss trends and give bad advice on swing mechanics, pitch selection, and even shifts. -
GDT Game 3/3 May 5th Jays @ Rangers 3:05 EST

I don't think I'm trolling. At least I'm not looking for a reaction, which is usually the point of trolling. He honestly hasn't had a popup yet... Just saying. Obviously I want to see him hit one 450 feet, like we all do. If he's gonna have bad luck, I'd atleast like to see the line drive, fly ball, ground ball and k rates turn around. Edit: Joey Votto doesn't hit popups either, so the popup rate can stay where it is, but everything else has to trend in the right direction. -

On the good side Vlad has a shot at getting his first game without a k since his game 1. Only 1 more at bat to go. If he can just popup he has a k-less game. That would be his first career popup... though they might be too much to ask, so I'm just hoping for another chopper.. -

Obviously you don't think this will continue. Logically it won't but if it does he's down. His k% is way to high. His ground ball percentage is insanely high. His ground ball to fly ball is ridiculous. At what point is it meaningful?? At what point do people have a right to be dissapointed?? At what point to they have a right to be worried? ** ** there is no earthly reason given scouting reports and minor league track record that this will continue other than a mental issue or an injury. Mental issues and injuries have happened to others. -

What's so bad about the comment?? The entire premise of this thread is that Charlie is an idiot who can't do the small things right at all. This will cost the team 10-20 runs this year. However if he is indeed an idiot, his idiocy could show up in other areas such as player development and hitting approach. The ratings I gave are absolutely fair, given what has happened so far. Things may change quickly. But given the team has a .290 on base percentage, given the young players have been a disaster, Charlie deserves an F. If this trend continued over the entire season Charlie would get an F from everyone (for offense, for pitching and defense he deserves an B or even A-). The only reason you are annoyed at the comment is because you assume (as do I) the trends won't continue. I'm just pointing out how bad the last 5 weeks have been in terms of offense and player development. -

You disagree with the ratings?? How so?? a) Do you think he should of gotten an A for pitching and defense?? Take a look at the comments on this thread. I don't care that much either way because the small things are small, but that being said assume there is a 15 run swing because of the small things he's at about -15. c) The team is on pace for the second worst on base percentage in team history, only the 1981 team was worse. The expansion 77 team was 25 points higher. What other mark than F could you give?? d) Every young player other than Rowdy has been terrible. The best prospect in baseball history has gotten off to a terrible start, a high profile cuban signing had to be sent down because of mental issues on defense. What other mark could you give him?? I'm open to discussion. This is only a 5 week report card. Things could get better. Or maybe not.
