  1. You obviously haven't been to Detroit in a while. The city is bankrupt it can't afford 25 cents per bullet. Now they just slingshot rats at you.
  2. If he keeps up this pace the Jays WILL make the playoffs...
  3. I really didn't care for Happ being traded at the time though Saunders did seem to fill a need. If we had all known Pillar was going to be a serviceable starter so far this year I think most of us would have preferred to keep Happ. A lot of the excitement over the deal was the thought that the salary savings would have been applied to bring in an experienced RP...there goes that idea.
  4. How has the pen been worse than the starting rotation? And blown saves aren't a valid measurement since the starters have blown countless early leads this year.
  5. People mourn about the pitching, but the other side of the equation is that they are doing this despite Reyes being out, EE sucking, and Bautista and Martin not really hitting but at least taking their walks. This offense was supposedly built around 5 elite guys. Only one of those five have performed at an elite level so far. This team still has the highest runs scored. That's gotta be scary for opposing teams to think about.
  6. What the f*** has Chad Jenkins done that has been so deplorable that he needs to find his way off the team? He's a bust as a top prospect but 97 innings of a 3.25 ERA/4.32 xFIP spread out over three years with an ability to make an occasional spot start is not the worst thing to have for depth on this team.
  7. There should be a one-day ban for anyone who blames the BP for the pitching mess and isn't doing so tongue-in-cheek or just to troll...this is just common sense...if a bunch of guys who were failed starters or otherwise trained to pitch out of the pen this year are forced to log more innings than the starters because they can't get out of the 5th, they will have a hard time performing at their peak.
  8. Maybe stick Dickey in the pen. Every starter goes 4 or 5 innings now anyways. Put in 2-3 innings from Dickey then the hard throwing guys at the end of the game. If every batter sees the knuckleball at least once in between 95 MPH fastballs I wonder if that'll be enough for the "knuckleball effect"? Have him throw 200 IP from the BP like a Wakefield-Gossage hybrid. In the off-chance that throwing too many knuckleballs destroys his arm...who cares...he's 40 now.
  9. Assuming the starting pitcher pitches 5 and leaves with a tight lead (3 or less, or tying run on deck) it's a save opportunity. Baseball rules can't predict if the RP coming in pitches to the end of the game or not, so it's always a save opportunity and thus a blown save is credited to the pitcher responsible if that lead is lost for the starting pitcher. The term "hold" was invented when HOF pitchers like Rich Gossage were replaced by one inning specialists so the guy who pitched the 7th could get credit for something. Not sure if the rules will ever change to call it a blown hold instead of blown save, given that nowadays no one expects a relief pitcher in the 7th to finish the game unless it's mop up duty.
  10. If you look at peripherals though they've all been pretty good. They got rid of the dead-weight in Redmond. Can the young guys "perform under pressure" consistently...a little early to tell. You can't look at the blown save stat in isolation though considering how many opportunities there have been to blow saves. You can't do Ward-Henke or Acker-Ward-Henke if every starter needs to be pulled in the 5th or 6th inning. I don't get your line: "I'd like to see how many holds they've given up" Isn't a blown hold just a blown save? Or is this another new stat I'm not aware of that's being parceled out thanks to mankind's ability to make superior micro-processors then apply that improved computing power to collecting new baseball stats.
  11. Detroit filled a glaring need by trading someone who wasn't likely to make their 25-man roster and that player have been playing well so far. Could they have gotten more for him by sticking Travis in Triple-A, and say, use him in a deadline deal? Maybe.
  12. One bad game at Fenway and people are resurrecting this thread and thinking about trades for Papelbon. Any bullpen issues can be solved with internal options at this point. Let's focus on getting the starters out of the 6th inning and under 5 FIP before crucifying the bullpen. Unless Papelbon plans on converting back to a starter bringing him to Toronto will not remotely plug the leak that's been plaguing this team.
  13. For every day that Travis keeps up this pace, that should be a one day auto-ban for anyone who whines about Yan Gomes. You win some, you lose some. And in this case both teams won because Gose has been no chump for Detroit and Travis was going nowhere behind Kinsler.
  14. Looks like they boycotted the whole series instead
  15. Someone should spray paint swastikas on the backs of their shirts while they're not looking. Gives a whole new context to those shirts.
  16. Reading it felt like placing together a fantasy league roster. The Jays *could* have defensive flexibility but the quality of the defense would be shot. I wouldn't want Bautista or Encarnacion at 3B any more than I would want Pompey or Martin there. Actually I'd prefer Martin to be there in a bind assuming he's not behind the plate.
  17. LOL I wonder what the standard white guy song would be? Nickelback? I guess the standard black guy tune would be f*** The Police?
  18. Part of the problem is they are pulling Buehrle way too early. If he's pitching well, let him go 9. There was no reason to pull him in those two blowouts. His arm is not going to fall off throwing 120 mid-80's mph pitches. Same with Dickey to a lesser extent though watching that last game was like nails on a chalkboard and last year we all got heart attacks when his pitched in the 7th. Hutchison I'm not worried about but the Jays need a rested BP for the two young guys. You have two guys who have a demonstrated ability to pitch well over 200 IP in a season. Use them.
  19. McGriff led the AL in HR in 1989 with 36. Did it again in the NL with 35 in 1992. By the time the Rockies came onto the scene in 1993, unofficially ending the "dead ball" era of the 80's, McGriff already compiled his best years and half of his total career WAR with 29, what Bautista has now.
  20. We can all blame bendera3 for bringing up the sensitive subject.
  21. Halladay should also be a no-brainer though Kenny Lofton fell off after his first year with a similar career WAR so who knows what those idiot voters will do. He'll probably get in after 3 or 4 tries. His playoff no-hitter helps but what I think is his greatest asset is his dominant winning percentage. He won twice as many games as he lost which plays well with the old school crowd and should get credit with the new school crowd considering he did that playing for some very mediocre teams.
  22. A reality check for those who think Bautista has a chance at the HOF. Fred McGriff had 493 HR and 57 WAR and is getting 10-15% support. Bautista has 249 HR and 28 WAR to date. So even if the guy has five straight 50 HR 5+ WAR seasons he's a fringe candidate. As in other words it's not happening under the most positive of circumstances unless he magically turns into a clean Barry Bonds for 6 years. Ortiz should not get a whiff either, and it would be a travesty to McGriff if he does. For Cliff Lee supporters, look to David Wells as a pretty good comparable if he pitches effectively for the next 3-4 years. He didn't even make the 5% cutoff in his first year of eligibility. Buehrle has a better chance and looks like he's got more left in the tank than Cliff Lee.
  23. Is anyone else annoyed by the format of this? Why does everything on the internet have to be a slide show now? Oh yeah, because it's easier to slip ads in where people might have to pay attention to them for a second.
