I'm going to be surprised if Vlad has that many 4+ win seasons. I think he's going to be a 2.5-3.0 win player with a well above average but not elite bat that someone else should overpay. Thankfully Vlad is still just 24.
I think it's likely fixable but what they almost need to do is option Manoah to AAA then move him to the development list or whatever it is called to send him to Florida to literally just get his mechanics in check. I don't think he can correct this at the big league level. This could in theory be just him working out, and getting mechanics in check with a pitch clock without the pressure from a game.
I like Horwitz but wish he had some positional versatility. If he could play a passable LF/RF and 1B he'd be a nice bench piece/platoon bat. He's always walked, doesn't K at a stupidly high rate. He reminds me of Frank Catalanotto for some reason.
I've been saying Bo is the Jays best player for a number of years and I stick by that. I know between here and reddit this winter I was saying I'd hesitate to sign Vlad to a long term deal but wouldn't hesitate with Bichette.
Manoah's numbers this year are worse than Kikuchi's numbers in 2022. I genuinely do not know how many more starts you can afford to waste on him but I'm not seeing an alternative in AAA/AA that isn't injured or struggling.
Sucks that Pop is hurt but we need a few arms anyway, I've lost all faith in Bass, I know the sample is small but he looks awful. Velocity is down, K/9 is down, BB/9 is up, giving up more hard contact, more barrels.
I'd be willing to forgive Votto for his numbers this is basically his first set of at bats since July of last year, no Spring Training so see how he looks in another 40-50 at bats.
I don't think he's too fat to pitch but he looks bigger this season, there's a chance he isn't and it's just camera and since I'm not seeing him in person it's hard to say. From what I've seen of his workout it's a lot of powerlifting and strongman compound lifts but I'm not sure how much stretching or cardio he's doing. What I do see is his velocity is down and he seems to be labouring with the pitch clock. He was our slowest pitcher in 2022 at 20.7 (bases empty) and 25.2 (with runners on) so you're talking 5 seconds faster between pitches every pitch. I'm not a small person (6'2" 280 as of today) but when I was competing in strongman when my cardio wasn't as much of a priority I'd get tired quicker than when my cardio was a much larger priority and I wonder if that is what is happening.
He looks like he's having a hard time catching his breath at this point.
I know Berrios has an 8 ERA but his FIP and xFIP are better than Gausman presently has. If Berrios BABIP drops from .419 to a more normal for him .300 he's likely going to be fine. I think how he pitched against Tampa is how he is going to have to pitch moving forward. I'm not overly concerned about Bassitt as I think he had a bit of a learning curve on calling his own pitches with pitchcom and a pitch clock and it's worked out. Kikuchi has looked good this season and I think as long as he keeps it simple he should be fine as a backend arm.
I think Manoah needs a phantom IL stint where he can just rest his arm and do some cardio and diet work with a rehab assignment.
My personal take, and I am not the author of the tweet but like that it summarizes what we can all see, is that Manoah is either hiding an injury of some sort or he's out of shape (he's always been big but looks a lot bigger this year) and with the pitch clock he's just gassed because he can't stand around rubbing the ball up behind the mound to catch his breath.
To the eye test Berrios has looked good, missed with some fastballs but otherwise has looked good. Kikuchi has looked good and Bassitt looked good in start 2 and all three have had some bad luck on balls in play. Manoah hasn't looked good at all.
It's only 3 starts so lots of time left for everyone to round into shape.
KC had some hits on balls that from the camera angle were well off the plate but had just enough juice to make it into the OF. They did hit him hard on a lot of pitches. The biggest issue is his 4 seam fastball just isn't getting high enough in the zone to be working up and down like he's trying to do, it's getting like belt high and staying there.
I don't know if when he was with the Twins if he was more inside and out in the lower half of the zone or if he was able to work up in the zone before.
Wouldn't surprise me, I haven't played since moving here from Kitchener where I was playing in the Tri-City league for the Devil Rays (with two games called up to the Panthers lol).
