    A bit more power would be nice from Sanchez but as the strong side of a platoon he’s for north of a 120 wRC+ on the season against RHP, dragging the overall down is his -2 wRC+ against “ LHP. He’s hitting like .280/.330/.450 against righties. Obviously the poor D and base running mean he needs to hit though.

    I enjoy that Bateman has zero power in the MiLB and is like 6 inches off getting an opposition field bomb off Wheeler lol.

    IIRC he has 40 grade raw power but hasn’t been able to unlock it in game.

    Just looking at Batemans spray chart and some video all of his home runs are to basically dead centre. I wonder if he could turn some of his 40 grade raw power into a bit more usable game power with an approach change like Bichette had to pull mistake pitches in the air in place of try to slap everything into left CF

    I was always under the impression that fWAR for pitchers is better for future predictions on performance based on what they can control but the better WAR for actual performance was bWAR or RA9-WAR. I don’t use bWAR as I like everything in one place and it doesn’t factor in catcher framing.

    Apparently, and this is just what I heard on a podcast, the Angels love 4 seamers and basically demand their pitchers throw them. The guest that was on thinks that Soriano to the Jays is going to be massive for his development into a power sinker early in counts to splitter and breaking ball for Ks with the odd 4 seamer to keep guys honest. He also has for basically his entire career had horrendous catchers who can’t steal strikes while our staff does and can, so he should actually excel with that.

    My fantasy baseball league does side bets around the deadline and if you’re open to going all in on predictions with specifics you can basically double your winnings if others will go in, if you’re wrong it just ends up in the league pot.

    I was as looking through a few contending teams that needed SP that weren’t on his no trade list and took a gander at MLB ready OF and a MIF or OF lottery ticket in the 15-30 range and this package stood out based on Bateman being a major league ready CF and a chance of Varsho being moved it sort of made sense to get a 24 year old CF who plays plus D with plus plus speed and an eye that Atkins seems to like and the SS seemed the same.

    Bateman is an immediate replacement for Varsho once he’s traded. He’s never going to hit for power but above average speed and base running and good D in CF. https://prospectsavant.com/player/703520 i don’t know much about the SS https://prospectsavant.com/player/807257 But this trade netted me a grand lol, I had a bet about this and this was the trade I predicted for Gausman.

    I personally am opposed to a cap but would prefer to have the luxury tax a lot more aggressive, something like the NBAs second sheet or whatever it’s called where when you pass the first threshold your tax is 1:1 so every dollar over costs you a dollar in tax but when you pass the second threshold it starts at 3:1 and gets more expensive. Someone did the math elsewhere but I can’t find the post that if the Dodgers and their $180m luxury tax bill had the NBAs rules it would actually end up being closer to $1.8 billion this season based on how their dollars increase in that second tier. There’s also restrictions on trades and free agent signings that I think should happen in baseball when youre over especially by multiple seasons. I also think we need a reverse cap with a floor with identical penalties for going below. If you drop below you pay a tax and hit a second tier below you pay triple and get hit with more penalties related to trading signing free agents and drafting.

    I honestly think Toronto is going to do a mix of buy and sell this deadline. I wouldn’t be shocked if we traded Hoffman, Gausman and Varsho if the returns are there and I wouldn’t be shocked if we traded for Soriano and a couple more pieces on the offensive side with control. I could see us trading, as an example not a realistic trade, with a team like Arizona and sending say Gausman for a good prospect, a couple of lottery tickets, Gurriel Jr and his full contract and eating some of Gausmans contract. You’d immediately DFA Gurriel but it frees up money for the DBacks to possibly make another few trades.

    The other consideration worth noting with Hoffman is his salary for next season at $12.33m or whatever. Would we be better as a team as a whole with him moved for say a teams 7-15 prospect or a young controllable piece who’s sitting as a AAAA player blocked but freeing up that say $11m after salary for a piece for next season.

    I’m actually rather excited about Jay Harry now in AAA. 137 combined wRC+ in AA and AAA with 13 bombs. Plays SS/2B and all 3 OF. Doesn’t hit into many double plays at about 3 per season in the minors, not fast but seems like a competent defender.

    Im expecting Scherzer to basically toss a 6 inning no hitter with double digit Ks before getting traded to the Nats after the game lol.

    I think he has a higher ceiling than Clement myself but we’re talking marginally.

    Matheson was saying if it’s internal brace it’s a 6 month recovery time and full TJS 9. So I’d assume the Jays have told him that.

    I’d assume in the case of Barger they saw a problem and hoped rehab, like any surgeon would recommend first, and when the team fell out of the playoff race and it was more obvious that rehab wasn’t going to cut it they arranged surgery. For CF I have a weird thought the Jays and Phillies will make a swap of Hoffman and Varsho for Justin Crawford and maybe another 35FV prospect.

    I think Guerreros is hitting something like .220/.240./.240 with a 45wRC+ in his last 200PA before the ASB. I think the team should be selling with how many teams look like buyers. Try and dump the last bit of Springer, move Gausman and if he does well in his next few starts Bieber. If someone offers an interesting piece for Lukes or Clement they should be on the block as well. Clement is 30, has lost a step and it’s showing in the fielding and his base running and has an offensive profile that ages poorly. Lukes is 32 and a 4th OF which should be enough said. Try and get MLB ready or near pieces like obviously don’t trade just to trade.

    Jesus Sanchez will likely get the vast majority of playing time in LF against RHP. He’s coming off a bad season but the prior two seasons was 116 and 119 wRC+ against RHP. He should never face a lefty. Schneider as a platoon mate works, sends Lukes to Buffalo with Straw as a 4th OF and Jimenez as a back up IF on the roster. Barger after the playoffs has likely earned himself some rope in RF against lefties, Varsho plays probably everyday unless it’s a day off against a really tough lefty with Straw taking a game in CF. Gimenez and Clement likely don’t get platooned as their D up the middle is game changing.

    The Japanese version of baseball savant says that Okamoto is a plus defender at 1st and an average defender at 3rd for his career. If he can make the routine plays anywhere near the bag and Gimenez is Gimenez at SS you’re fine. If Varsho has another Varsho season with a bat around 100 wRC+ and an elite season in CF he’s probably a 20-25m a season player.

    I wonder if the Braves would consider moving Acuna Jr. Yes a stiff breeze is enough to put him on the IL and he’s affordable but he won’t be a player the Braves can afford once his options are up.
