  1. This is completely asinine and I hope it never comes to fruition in the minor or major leagues. The league needs to think of fans instead of pandering to television networks. No knowledgable fan would consider this a positive change and neither will the players.
  2. I believe Chris McGuiness made their roster one year and he made a few other selections, but nothing notable. Basically the point is that he hasn't suddenly changed strategies and will keep Sparkman now because of it. They got lucky with Biagini, but it doesn't happen very often and he knows that.
  3. Would a veteran executive like Shapiro really be swayed by their success with Biagini, even though he has overseen more than 20 Rule V drafts (of which, Biagini is his only success)? If Sparkman makes the team, it won't be because he is riding Biagini's coattails.
  4. I won't argue over the definition of common, but there are several examples every year so I always try to find a second source if the player has been injured.
  5. I'd note that this list isn't always accurate because special exemptions for players are rather common and undisclosed, especially for ones that have been injured.
  6. Lol sorry, I just looked at the very last post.
  7. They must have expected teams like the Nationals, Brewers, Mariners, Yankees, Royals, etc. to be more heavily involved in the DH market. Otherwise, there were many more quality hitters than available spots. Many of us on this forum were preaching patience with Edwin because of this obvious fact. I'd love to hear an honest explanation some day because it still makes no logical sense at all.
  8. Expectations for a Rule V pickup seem rather high, perhaps due to our experience with Biagini last year. It's exceedingly rare for such a player to carve out a role on a contending team. I'm not against giving him a shot if he earns it in ST, but the smart money is on him not making it.
  9. It's hardly an American invention, but it is the thing that I admire most about your countrymen. Being proud of where you come from and who you are makes you a happy person and a good person.
  10. You could call it an acknowledgement instead of a reminder. I take the time during the anthem to think about my ancestors who fought in the wars and all of the other things that make the country great. People outside of big city centers feel it is a good thing to do. I've never heard your perspective once outside of this forum. Unless you have season tickets, it's maybe a once a week thing anyways.
  11. I wouldn't bet on that, but still decent moves nonetheless.
  12. I like being reminded of how lucky we are to live in Canada. The fact that we are able to watch the top athletes in the world is a luxury that very few people have. Locals in Brazil couldn't even afford to watch the Olympics in their own Country. Even the poorest Canadian can see the occasional sporting event thanks to our social safety net. I don't care if you are patriotic or not, but most people are and they shouldn't be criticized for it.
  13. Guys like Bolsinger. Better depth than that must come from prospects and not minor league signings.
  14. Football is once every 7 days on a weekend, while baseball is played every day. That's a big difference in terms of time.
  15. SP depth options will be at peak availability during Spring Training. It seems like people aren't aware of that fact.
  16. Obviouly you just make a move no matter what if it is necessary to do so, but I think that a player's mindset is worth considering in a move where it isn't at all clear that the strategy is a good one. If he's much more confident out of the bullpen then maybe we should leave him there. I'm certain that Osuna influenced his role with the team.
  17. I'm not sure if they are bigger issues, but I'm curious to see how the LF and 1B situations play out. After the Encarnacion clusterf***, we find ourselves desperately needing a deeper lineup and have absolutely putrid options at two key offensive positions. I'm hopeful that Upton and Pearce just take the jobs and play well, but we will likely have to add. The bullpen is my other big concern. I like our recent signings, but we're still relying heavily on guys on the downside of their career with less than inspiring depth options to back them up. The 7th and 8th innings could be difficult unless Grilli stays healthy and Howell and Smith reverse their downward trends. I'm hopeful that we can be average with the right additions throughout the season, however.
  18. I question whether Biagini has the ability to be an average starter, but the F.O. will have to make that determination for themseoves. If they conclude that he does, then I would accept a move to the AAA rotation. I think that this is an instance where they should consult the player as well. If he's dead set against converting back and/or going back to the minors then that should factor into their decision making process.
  19. Decent signing in Smith, he probably bumps our pen up to average. If we had afforded ourselves the same patience in the DH market, it could have been a very good offseason. I would have preferred Salas or Blanton at the prices we have seen, but who knows if they would have signed here. The contrast in styles between Smith and Grilli gives Gibby some nice matchup options. I recall him successfully using a similar guy (Shawn Camp) in DP situations in the late innings.
  20. The Cooperstown game also had many significant differences and would hardly be recognized as baseball by today's fans. Pitchers threw underhand, the distance between the bases was different, there was no such thing as a ball, they still used a cricket style bat, balls caught on the bounce were outs, etc. Baseball historians have to draw the line between the old British games like 'Rounders' and modern baseball at some point. It's very subjective. Many aspects of the modern game were first recorded in the Beachville game. There were also a number of big differences, but many objective historians believe that these new rules (whoever invented them) were a turning point that led to 20th century baseball.
  21. We have no proof that it even happened one time.
  22. I don't think players feel that way. Even getting inducted into a local sports Hall of Fame is something that players are extremely proud of in my experience.
  23. Steamer projects those 7 players for 10.2 WAR after they put up 10.7 WAR in 2016, just for reference. I'm not disputing the possibility that we could be better. I expect bounce backs from Tulo and Bautista in particular. If we're being realistic though, more of the same is a pretty strong possibility.
  24. Is that realistic? When I see old players get injured and have poor years, it doesn't exactly fill me with optimism. Morales is what he is, a mediocre DH. I don't see any reason to expect more from him.
  25. I get what you're saying, but we pretty much had the best rotation in the league. To expect any significant improvement, to me, is unrealistic. Also, we are an old team overall. Some players will improve, but another year gone by is generally bad news for us.
