I think when you control a player like Donaldson there is an onus to compete. Their window runs through 2018 - that's how they need to look at it.
Next offseason they have Bautista, Liriano and Estrada as significant potential departures (also some relievers but who cares). Not irreplaceable by any means. And Estrada might be an easy extension.
So yeah, I think they can justify letting him walk. Take a shot in 2018.

With players this talented there is also a lot of variance (so far to fall). So, it's basically a situation where you can't go right/wrong and any of them could blow the other two away.
If he is an .820 OPS player then sure, that's true, but he doesn't project to be and his profile points to a player that might not even wRC+ 100
I think he's about as good/valuable as my extra OF Scott Schebler, no exaggeration.
