It's more what I think the FO should be trying to do. If Arizona can sign Greinke and Washington can sign Scherzer, Toronto and their massive market and top-10 payroll can absolutely afford Cole. That said, in no way do I expect him to even be in play. -
Robles having a better hit tool than Soto is a pretty hard sell. ZiPS/Steamer have Soto 13th of 611 players in projected average and 4th in projected OBP right now at 20 years old. That's like a current 70 grade hit tool and maybe 80 if improves.

I think what makes the season so demoralizing is that we were all optimistic that this season would be the first step in the transformation into a perpetually competitive club. We knew we'd lose more than we'd win, but we thought we'd be respectable, watch the young guys develop into MLB players, and enter the offseason as a team on the rise with serious $$$ to spend for big-time additions. It's now late June, and we're on track to lose 100 game, and so little has gone right that we don't even know if Ross Atkins is competent at his job. It's like going on a date with 10/10 you met online and realizing her pictures were taken 100 pounds ago.

I actually didn't think Stro and Shoemaker were that high. Thornton pitching like a ~2-win starter is a pretty good outcome though. I just see a bottom-half pitching staff that's also been riddled by injuries and pitching more or less as expected.

I dunno, our good pitchers have pitched well (Stroman, Giles, Thornton, Shoemaker before he died). I think the problem is that the pitching staff sucks.

I think so too. He has the fastball and the breaking ball. Let him go balls out an inning at a time and see what happens. Maybe eventually he becomes someone who can give you multiple good innings. It's not working as a starter. And it's best we find out before deciding whether or not to tender him a contract.

I hate this deal for me, but I have 9 saves all season. Rolling the dice that Robles Fernando Rodneys his way to 1-2 saves a week before I cut him in the offseason.
