I don’t really consider Pineda a big miss. He was good in 2019, but the fastball velo is down several ticks, and he’s fat now and had knee, and I think minor arm issues last year. He’s also out until mid-May. I wouldn’t have minded him at 2/20, but I don’t think it’s a steal or anything.

Free agents almost always go to the highest bidder. I don't think many people will care about being a bid high on the $/WAR projections or whatever if the player is a good fit.

I just looked up Grichuk's xwOBA thinking he probably under-performed it, but he actually beat it by a hair. His DRS was also 10 runs worse than his UZR. He probably wasn't even as good as his 0.5 fWAR

I was just responding to you saying that Corbin and Wheeler were the same pitcher last year. But yeah, you're mostly right. If I'm committing to Zack Wheeler for 5 years I'm probably not assuming he takes a leap forward in his age-30 season.

That's only true of you look at FIP-based WAR and think Wheeler has a sticky skill set for suppressing homeruns on flyballs. If I had to give one of the two a CY vote for 2019 it would be Corbin without really thinking twice.

I don't think AA has done a very good job spending money.

Honestly, this team could add three more established starters and not have to worry about a roster crunch. Anderson is the 4th starter, and you go with whoever of Thornton/Borucki/Shoemaker is healthy and throwing well as the 5th guy.

I want an ace as much as everyone, but this team's problem is not that it has too many league average starters. They don't have a single starter that projects to have a 2-win season, and it's really only Anderson and Thornton that can be relied on for a full season of useful starts, to whatever extentyou can rely on a pitcher. If you project Lindblom at 2 wins, there isn't a team in baseball that can thumb their nose at that. The idea that a team with like 2.5 actual starters is too good for a league average SP on a reasonable deal is very misguided.

7.5M guarantee for Jake Diekman over 2 years. This market is not what it was the last couple offseasons.

It's an interesting comparison. I trusted Corbin's skills a lot more going into 2019 than I trust Wheeler's going into 2020. I see a guy who's pitched like a 3-3.5 win starter and been pretty fortunate in suppressing homeruns on fly balls. I get that there are reasons to think improving his pitch mix will help him take a big step, but I have a hard time buying him as a good investment at 110M or whatever he ends up getting. I think I'd rather have Keuchel at like 4/60 or something.

I have no interest in Wheeler at that price. He has a long history of arm issues, and is running like a 3.9 xFIP pitching in the NL over the last two years. I think the most likely outcome is that you pay 100M for 5 years of a 3-win starter who is rarely healthy enough to provide 3 wins of value.

At least Law is gone, but I can't wrap my head around paying Brandon Drury 2.5M given the amount of talent available on the market right now. Dude is 27 and has put up -1.1 fWAR over the last two seasons and has been replacement level over like 1500 career PA. It's almost unheard of for players like that to get guaranteed money in today's game.
