This forum would turn on JBJ in about two weeks. He’s a left-handed Pillar who looks lost at the plate for months at a time, and there was a jubilant reaction when Pillar was traded for salary relief.
It’s actually weird that we see JBJ offered as a target daily and no mentions whatsoever of Pillar.
Yup. Their roster would have looked something like:
C - Contreras
1B - Rizzo
2B - Hoerner
3B - Bryant
SS - Baez
LF -
CF - Happ
RF - Heyward
Darvish
Hendricks
Alzolay
Throwing up your hands and punting when you have that core is crazy. It's a good team! They won their division last year and probably would have been the favourite to do it again if they'd just picked up a bit of OF depth and a cheap starter or two to throw out there behind Darvish and Hendricks.
The Cubs don't really even have much on the books in terms of long term bad contracts. They owe Kimbrel 17M this year which looks like a sunk cost, and owe Heyward 65M over the next three years. Their franchise crippling mistakes were Eloy Jimenez and Gleyber Torres.
But they didn't even have to be bad next year. They're just kind of weirdly throwing in the towel.
I wouldn't have hated it if Toronto gave Lemahieu the deal he got. I don't hate it for the Yankees. It's like the Ryu deal - it's probably not going to be a $/WAR success story, but it doesn't have to be. I just don't think it's particularly team-friendly for NY.
FWIW, I wouldn't have said JD's contract was team friendly either. 92M is a lot of money for a 34-year old with chronic calf issues, regardless of how good he is when he's able to play.
Nobody actually wants more than like 2 years of him. This contract might as well be 4 or 5/90 with some money deferred, because he's probably not playing for the Yankees by the end of the deal.
MLBTR projected him to get 4/68 at the start of the offseason. Median FG crowdsource was 3/45 (lol). He only got 24M two years and less than 900 PA ago. I know he's been outstanding the last 1.3 seasons, but this is a guy who sucked at hitting for almost 4000 PA before 2019. I don't think it's obvious that the Yankees are happy about this deal 2 years from now.
Walker is an unsexy inning eater back end starter who doesn't eat innings. If we're targeting that caliber of arm I'd rather have Quintana, Happ, or Waino on 1-year deals. Hell, Brett Anderson probably gets like 4M on a 1-year deal and he's basically Walker when it comes to results and reliability.
Yeah, you’re right that it’s not nothing.
I actually wonder what the team would do if they could spread Roark’s salary over like 5 years if they cut him.
The 15M team option with a 15M buyout is something we’ve never seen before. I guess he’d have to be utterly broken for the team to prefer to punt him and pay the money instalments.
