  1. He was basically fastball / curveball. He had a change, but it was basically for show and thrown very rarely (and wasn't really very good anyway). He didn't really add the splitter until he went to the Phillies (in exchange for the change). Now if you consider the cutter and sinker to be additional pitches, then fine. Realistically he had several variations of a fastball and the curve when he pitched for us.
  2. Halladay was basically a 2 pitch pitcher, so was Randy Johnson. Yeah the each HAD another pitch or two, but they didn't throw them much.
  3. That's a fantastic quote. I love that mentality.
  4. Quite a pitching matchup going on in Oakland so far.
  5. He talked about how hard the game was and things like that. He wouldn't have said that if he thought he was playing great. He knows he's playing poorly.
  6. I suspect the Jays were concerned about him struggling during the rehab assignment as a starter, and then having a big issue on what to do with him. I think the first step was to get him back, healthy, and confident. I mean, he's pitched so little in the last few years it isn't funny. Pitchers who throw 200 innings still have occasional problems with mechanics and stuff, let alone one who's thrown about 30 in the last 5 years. The second step (possibly next spring) would be to stretch him out.
  7. I don't really have a big issue with what JPA said about Heyhurst or Dirk's original criticisms and response. I think both were fair and honest. I DO have an issue with JPA speaking for the team and wonder if it will cause bad blood in the clubhouse regarding Melky. What I DO like about this situation is that JPA is clearly frustrated with how he and the team are playing. Hopefully he will use it constructively (aside from this interview) and improve his game. Sometimes you have to hit bottom before you can move forward, and hopefully this is his bottom.
  8. Just completely forget about a 5th starter, add an extra bp arm, and do the games by committee. Dustin can add 1 inning at a time to his starts and still be available on his throw day in between.
  9. And Delabar did it to them the other night. Tigers get to see what a real pen is like, and we get to see what real starting pitching is like ...
  10. Between the 98 by McGowan and the 102 by Rondon, the gun may be a little hot tonight. No denying the nasty stuff though.
  11. Rondon's breaking ball is like 7mph faster than Buehrle's fastball.
  12. LMAO, the outfielder was almost on the infield when he threw that. Great slide Bautista!
  13. Dunno, Detroit's pen is pretty bad. Wouldn't be much of a loss for one of them to get a few day's suspension. I assume Scherzer won't though.
  14. That was a GREAT slide by Rasmus. Clean but hard. Unfortunate "break" for Infante (hope he's okay), but that's the kind of attitude and hard play we need. Fully expect Rasmus to have a bullseye on his back now though.
  15. Pretty hard not to go with Trout imo, since every part of his game is dynamic. I'm not sold on Machado like a lot of people are, at least not on him being elite. I want to see how Puig responds when he has his first major slump before I'd even consider taking him over Trout, and same with Harper's knee.
  16. Most definitely NOT in favor of this. If you can get a decent return for him (and apparently there were a few gm's drooling over him in the offseason), I'm okay with trading him. DFA'ing him, absolutely not.
  17. If the price is right, I'd be very much in favor of this assuming Doc was willing to go on the Delabar program.
  18. I'm glad Wang accepted the assignment. I actually think most of his issues are pitch selection (overusing the sinker) more than anything else. He seems to have it in his head that it's all he should throw, but he doesn't throw mid 90's any more and can't get away with it.
  19. People need to remember that our payroll will probably go up next year even if Johnson walks. Several guys have big jumps in their contracts next year (Buehrle, Dickey, and Reyes account for almost 20M all by themselves).
  20. On the plus side, Detroit has the most trouble with ground ball pitchers, and Wang is an extreme one. Some of the Tigers numbers are ridiculous. They're hitting over .300 against starters this year, but only .229 the first time through the order with a reliever.
