  1. I think the only way I'd let them have Hutch and Sanchez in a trade (wouldn't include Morrow) for Phillips would be if they took back some dead short term salary in return as well (can anyone say Romero?). Perhaps throw in one of our non-elite relievers too.

Canucks are making the Oilers look really bad right now.
  3. In fairness, basically all of that value came from the glove, not the bat.
  4. Maybe the fans should now sue A-Rod for emotional distress or something. I wonder if this will spur the Yankees to try to void his contract?
  5. My point was that if you consider 2011 to be a career year, then 2013 was the only year he's declined, which may have just been a bad year (or perhaps he was battling some minor injuries).
  6. I'm not convinced he's (significantly) declining as much as just having had a bad year. 2011 was probably a career year for him, but his previous seasons were all pretty much like his 2012 was, which was almost bang on his career averages. His defensive numbers were also pretty much in line with what you'd expect, with the exception of a few extra errors. With that said, if we have to spend a higher amount next year on a second baseman I think I'd rather just go out and get infante or someone similar rather than give assets too.
  7. This might be the first time where "the only winners are the lawyers" is a good thing.

Hockey and basketball are also far more dynamic, and individual results depend much more on teammates. It's much harder to do advanced analysis on it I would think.
  9. Yes. The question for me is whether he'll stay relatively healthy. In other health news, this is a rather interesting read http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/davidi-johnson-hopes-to-return-to-blue-jays/ Included were some tidbits about Alex possibly willing to do incentive deals this off-season, which is a big shift.

Lots of high scores today. Glad none of my goalies were playing.
  11. If he stays healthy, I think he'll be above average.
  12. Genuinely want to say congrats to JPA. Still going to immensely enjoy the jokes that follow from this though.
  13. I can't find the article, but I know it came out at some point that AA was very heavily into advanced stats early in his career (well before he became GM). He understands them, count on it. He's also said (from 2011 BP article) that when he became GM the Jays were extremely lacking in using stats, but he's been trying to build that up gradually. People around here tend to get a perception of something in their heads and then go off the deep end with it. AA may not be into stats at the same level as Beane (most aren't), but he isn't an old school dinosaur either. I think he also said recently that he listened too much to some of his advisers in the past and ignored his own beliefs, and that he needed to be a little more firm in listening to his own evaluations.
  14. I agree. Last thing you want to do here is bring in a tired Rodney (or a fresh one for that matter).
  15. Surprised Ogando is still in there. Wonder what will happen on the Rays side in the 9th, since we made Rodney throw a lot of pitches last night.
  16. Texas was incredibly lucky to get out of that inning with minimal damage.
  17. I wonder how many fans would be in the stands if this was in TB instead of Texas. The Rangers would probably have home field from the fans either way.
  18. Looks like the game is on Sportsnet today as well, in case anyone wasn't sure.
  19. No, it also is for those of us who like to try to figure out payroll flexibility and off-season targets as well. Another interesting thing they said was that Rasmus was in charge of the outfield defense this year, in terms of positioning and stuff.
  20. Yeah, so do I, but our spreadsheets from Cot's contracts and stuff don't display it that way so I thought it would be worth mentioning for people.
  21. They said one thing interesting, in that with the way the Jays do accounting, the Lind buyout would go on the books for this year if they chose to do so.
  22. There's no good answer to your question. WAR is mildly flawed in hitting, and extremely flawed in pitching and defense. With the current data at our disposal, it's also one of the best tools we have. More to the point though, I have a hard time in these kinds of awards penalizing the defense of someone like Cabrera or Choo who are playing out of position at the team's request.
