  1. BTW, you could probably also hire someone on one of those sites to build you massive database too, although I suspect you already have a fairly robust one.
  2. You could probably hire someone on Google Helpouts, ODesk, or Mechanical Turk to translate them for a few bucks if you wanted to.
  3. I'd prefer someone like Porcello for the 5th spot, but Halladay would have the advantage of selling lots of season tickets and creating some more buzz around the casuals which is also important. Sign him soon, put him on the Delabar program, and see what happens. I bet in terms of ticket sales he provides huge surplus value, even if he doesn't on the field.
  4. It'll probably end up being someone none of us expected. Maybe Tommy Joseph from the Phillies or something else like that.
  5. C.J. Wilson might be another (too early to tell for sure). Oops, saw you listed him. Deal should turn out okay for them though.
  6. I can't see it being more than that (it really shouldn't be), but you never know. All it takes is one desperate team.
  7. I also think Hughes could be an intriguing option at the back of the rotation, and will likely come very cheap.
  8. I agree, I think Jimenez is the perfect fit for us assuming he doesn't go for some insane amount. He isn't overly efficient, but he's had 6 straight seasons making at least 31 starts, has put up 3.2 WAR or higher in 5 of his last 6 seasons, and an xFIP of 3.71 or lower in 4 of his last 5. Add to that the fact that's he's a ground ball pitcher, and I think it makes perfect sense. Put him and Porcello in the rotation and we'd have 4 guys with a high probability of making 30+ starts and a high upside wildcard in Morrow. I don't understand why so many people dislike the idea of him.
  9. It seems to me that 5 fits fairly nicely with the WAR values we see on Fangraphs (and the contracts that are given out). If other organizations have different replacement levels than what Fangraphs has or uses a different formula, it would make sense that they might have different numbers. Since we don't have those other numbers, I like the idea of using the two that we know are designed to work together. With that said, I'd also be totally on board with all of us crowdsourcing our own WAR formula, replacement level, and numbers and using those.
  10. If I remember right, Haren's family wasn't happy last year with him pitching outside of the west coast or something. He wasn't coming here.
  11. I think my preference is: Jimenez > Samardzjia (for lesser prospects) > Nolasco > Porcello >> Samardzjia (for Sanchez/Stroman).
  12. This is a read from a Chicago paper (so take it for what it's worth) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/11/05/wisch-the-cubs-can-trade-castro-but-not-to-the-cardinals/ This was of relevant interest:
  13. Janssen is in the final year of his contract. It makes no sense for a non-contending team to want him as a major chip. Gose doesn't come close to getting Castro unless there's something seriously wrong with him that I don't know about.
  14. Cubs are rebuilding, so I don't see them having any interest in Janssen. They definitely appear to need some SP though. I think to land Castro would take Sanchez or Stroman in the deal, but we may be able to put together something intriguing enough in volume to get Samardzija without.
  15. 2010 and 2013 were both September callups.
  16. Also want to say grats! That's awesome!
  17. Cubs hang up the phone with extreme prejudice.
  18. I'm actually quite excited by the idea of Drabek (although I'd rather get a high end starter + Porcello). The issue with Drabek (aside from the TJ's) has always been the walks since he came here, but last year the reports were that he finally realized he's got to trust his stuff and stop walking people, and he put up a 1.3 bb/9 and 5.83 k/bb. Not surprising the other numbers followed.
  19. Unless they need to make McGowan the 5th starter to avoid losing him (which probably isn't the case), I actually think Drabek may be 1st in line for a rotation spot, with Hutch a close second.
  20. Probably almost anything we could give them that doesn't involve our big two or Lawrie/Edwin/JB would be a win.
  21. He'll probably be back next year for the final month, then some extra action in the fall.
  22. Think it's closer to a year now.
  23. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2013-disabled-list-team-data/ Man, look at that loooooong line for our pitchers ... and that was with Dickey pitching 1/2 the year when he probably shouldn't have been.
  24. That might be easier said than done if they are up against the cap.
  25. With this deal and Nova arbitration, this probably puts them around 120M with only two starting pitchers, no Cano, and lots of arbitration guys. 70M may sound like a lot, but it's gonna get eaten fast.
