Oakland should not even be a team.  They are not competitive.   Their claim to fame is being from the ghetto across the bridge from San Francisco?  yea, real impressive, *******s.

And they were the team in that Moneyball movie 😂

There’s literally only 5 teams in the AL with a record over .500 right now. 5 out of 15.

Its an extreme outlier year and wouldn’t expect this jays team to be in contention in any other year.

Even under the old playoff system you’d have a team like the 63-60 Astros winning their division

Every season is different. It’s definitely surprising how weak the AL has been this year, but it’s not like this happens every season. The balance of power fluctuates from year to year. The NL has been much stronger this season. You’ve got two teams tied for the third Wild Card spot at a .532 winning percentage, which would actually be good enough to lead both the AL Central and AL West right now.

The Jays are pretty fortunate they’re in the AL during a year when the league has been a dumpster fire. If they were in the NL with the exact same record, they’d probably be something like six games back of the final Wild Card instead of right in the middle of the race.

The expanded playoff format sucks. Its offensive that a team that has been this s*** all year is in the playoff picture. We used to mock the NHL for this nonsense.

Under the old playoff format of three division winners plus one Wild Card, Jays fans were complaining about that system back in the 2000s too. With the Yankees and Red Sox routinely dominating the AL East, Toronto basically had no realistic path to the postseason unless they put together an elite season.

The Jays won 86 games in 2003 and 87 games in 2006 yet by this point in those seasons, they were essentially already out of contention and playing meaningless baseball.

That’s why I prefer the expanded playoff format. You can argue six teams per league is too many when the AL is as weak as it is this year, but at least good teams aren’t basically eliminated by August simply because they happen to play in a stacked division. We wouldn't be saying the same about the NL right now, where all 6 teams who make the Postseason are all pretty strong, even the teams battling for the third Wild Card.

It makes some sense that the NL is stronger over the past few years with the Dodgers doing what they're doing. Kinda forces other NL teams to improve themselves to try and keep pace and over the course of 3 or 4 years, the margins start to increase across the board ... unless you're Colorado.

Probables:

  • Soriano vs. Martinez
  • Scherzer vs. Rasmussen
  • Bieber vs. Seymour
  • Bullpen vs. Schlittler
  • Cease vs. Weathers
  • Soriano vs. Warren

Jays starters in a short series can be formidable.  Imagine you're the opposing team having to face Cease, Soriano and a rejuvenated Bieber.

No wants to play this slap hitting dark horse with Vladdy doing his best Undertaker impression come the post season.

Parise to the pitching staff

MIA:

Yimi Garcia

Ponce

Berrios

Yesavage

Arighetti

Corbin

Taillon

Francis

And yet somehow the 4 starters still standing and the bullpen have made this resurgence possible with suboptimal contributions from the offense most days

Kudos bros

Offense:

Over the last 17 games the Jays have scored an average of 3.65 runs per game.

Tied for 23rd best in all of baseball.

I wonder how that stands when you add in the payroll factor,  I'm gonna say last.

Actually no

Some big budget teams have been worse than us offensively over the last 17 games

It's only 17 games of course not a full season

Number of runs scored by teams over the Jays last 17 game stretch

I only looked it up to illustrate how is the pitching that's responsible for the resurgence

I wanted to factor in payroll (from Gemini Pro).  Look at those White Sox

We have the 5th highest payroll and the 29th fewest runs scored (so far)

Here is the raw data for the five highest and five lowest MLB payrolls in 2026 compared to their offensive output so far:

Team 2026 Payroll (Approx.) Payroll Rank Runs Scored (Mid-Aug) Offense Rank
Los Angeles Dodgers $430 Million 1st 616 4th
New York Mets $370 Million 2nd 523 22nd
New York Yankees $336 Million 3rd 551 16th
Philadelphia Phillies $315 Million 4th 558 15th
Toronto Blue Jays $307 Million 5th 492 29th
--- --- --- --- ---
Chicago White Sox $116 Million 26th 594 8th
Tampa Bay Rays $114 Million 27th 559 14th
St. Louis Cardinals $108 Million 28th 550 17th
Cleveland Guardians $90 Million 29th 494 28th
Miami Marlins $83 Million 30th 550 17th

Yep

Rays win

Jays now only 0.5 games back

Rays barely survived the Orioles.

Of course they'll show up for us though. They always do.

In fairness, Orioles can actually score runs, this Toronto team is f***ing awful offensively.

Let's not get it twisted, this is a lousy Blue Jays team having a bad season being salvaged by an awful American League.

While we'll gladly take the meaningful baseball, this isn't a good team.

The potential to be a pretty good team still remains, but they are showing fewer signs than ever of offensively doing anything.

We knew Vladdy was capable of two month slumps

Never did I believe he could suck for an entire SEASON

Good thing it’s a year where the dodgers also suck.  Should be a cinch
