Masterbather Old-Timey Member Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago It doesn't really get real until we get through those games with the Yankees and Tampa. An 85% of not making the playoffs is still quite terrible. If we get through those nine games still reasonably within reach, then it starts to get real. As it stands right now, those series' could easily knock us right out. It's like how a no-hitter doesn't really start to get real until you get through seven, right now we're through six. Would only consider it if they believe Santander is done/dead with a chronic shoulder injury. If Springer came back on a cheap one-year deal in the $4–5M range, similar to what the Yankees gave Goldschmidt last offseason, I’d be okay with it. The issue is that Springer still essentially clogs up the DH spot, whereas Goldschmidt could at least give you innings at a position. I’d rather use that roster spot on a veteran bat who can comfortably play 50–60 games in the field. That keeps the DH spot flexible for days when someone like Vladdy or Okamoto needs a break from playing the field without taking their bat out of the lineup. Plus, we'll see what's up with Santander. A lot depends on his health.

gruber9292 Verified Member Posted 14 hours ago Posted 14 hours ago I feel that Okamoto isn't quite the offensive profile Ross was hoping for as I think he was hoping for more contact and plate discipline. Although he's still providing surplus value on the 3/30 he signed, don't be surprised if he's included in a deal in the off season if it brings in a middle of the order type player that fits more of the profile that Ross can't refuse.

Okamoto is basically Matt Chapman offensively. He should give you around 30 HR with a wRC+ hopefully somewhere in the 110–120 range. Given the low BB% and average defense, he’s probably more of a 3-WAR player than anything beyond that. He’s not the superstar or elite bat this lineup still needs to pair with Vlad. But he’s a very good secondary piece, someone you can comfortably hit fifth or sixth who can give you 30 HR and provide some legitimate power in the middle of the order. Nothing wrong with that at all. I’d also add that Okamoto has already become a fan favourite here, so from a PR standpoint, trading him probably wouldn’t be ideal either. There’s also a bigger-picture benefit to keeping him around. Having Okamoto in Toronto helps strengthen the Jays’ presence in the Japanese market and could make the organization a more attractive destination for other Japanese players in the future. That’s not something you can just dismiss when evaluating his overall value to the franchise.

Granted, Sanchez is probably non-tendered but Pinango has a decent chance of starting next year beside Bateman and Lukes until Barger comes back
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago It's actually wild how much swing and miss there is in Oka's bat. He was a sub 15% K rate in Japan the last 2 years. I hope he can make adjustments and get the number down to the low 20's moving forward. Olerud363.354, Spanky__99 and max silver 3

I hear you but I feel like we can't continue on playing with such small margins for error and remain consistently successful. At some point the line up needs to increase that margin or else the laws of probability will catch up.

I think Lukes will be gone, Sanchez likely non-tendered, Straw's option declined. I feel like the'll try to bring Straw back at a lower number and i hope it happens because he's as good a 4th OF there is in baseball defensively and still hits lefties well so the compliment to Bateman is a tangible. They may even try to bring Sanchez back as a strong side platoon until Barger is ready since he actually hits RHP well and at keast represents a power threat off the bench against RHP. Could easily live without him though and just roll with Pinango in that role though. OF free agents is a cesspool so barring Atkins making a boss trade befire or after the lockout, inagreebthe OF looks average at best offensively.
