Still haven't really gained anything on the second last in this race. Cleveland, Baltimore, Minnesota, Texas, Seattle, Detroit.   So still 7th.    

We've got a dual mandate here of gaining games in this race, but also have to pass some teams.   I mean, all these teams are like within 2 games of each other so they are going to start flipping like crazy I think.  However at BJMB need to up the scoreboard watching a bit.   I think we need a near term goal of moving from 7th in this crazy race to 6th while maintaining 3 or less games back overall.  

Could split the scoreboard watching?  Some people keep an eye on Cleveland, Texas and Baltimore, the leaders in this crazy race, and others on Minnesota, Seattle and Detroit.  

Also may sound crazy but I think the Jays should have a big clubhouse champagne and Bud Light party when they pass Detroit of Seattle or who-ever it is, IF they are still within 3.  

Like when you clinch your wild card on Sept 20th they often do that knowing there are still potentially several parties ahead.  So this should be the same.  Have 3 or 4 big goals and each gets a party.  So moving to 6th in the wild card race would have a celebration.

So we didn't gain any net ground just 3.5 behind the Rangers now instead.

Need to keep winning.  And ideally one of BOS or NYY gets beaten back a bunch.  But their only games against each other are next weekend (4 games in 3 days). 

We play the Red Sox 4 times and the Yankees 6 times over the next couple of weeks. Need to stay hot.

The Mariners have a tough August but in September they play the A's 7 times, Angels 7 times, Rockies 3 times. Seventeen games which are absolutely cake.

It's unlikely though every coin flip goes your way.  The offense is still not too great and every game is close and one random thing flips it.  What if Nathan Lukes and Ernie Clement didn't hit 2 run homers at just the right time?  What if Alex Bregman didn't ?  

What if Ernie hit the fly ball we needed Sunday in Philadelphia?  Well what if Boston hit a fly ball with Duran on 3rd less than 2 out yesterday?

I think the coins are flipping, not always in our favor though weighted a bit to us the last week.  

What we really need is the offense to get going and win like 8-3 or something one day.

Guardians and Mariners have both been crashing lately. I don’t really see the Orioles as much of a threat. The Twins just lost Ryan to the IL, and Buxton is made of glass, so they could easily continue to free-fall.

Detroit is the team that worries me most. They’ve been hot lately, and even after trading Skubal, they still look dangerous. They’re sitting at a +89 run differential, so right now they look like the biggest legitimate threat and competition for a Wild Card spot. The Rangers are pretty meh.

Maybe you can’t completely count Seattle out because of their starting pitching, but their lineup has been awful.

I suspect other teams look at us and dismiss us in a similar fashion.  Detroit is the clear concern.  That's a good team, even without Skubal.

Run differential is wild this year. AL West is all negative.  Pittsburgh is a +19, while in last place

The "strength of schedule" metric is different on various websites. On the tankathon site they actually have Toronto's remaining schedule as relatively easy. But the easiest in baseball still belong to Cleveland, Seattle, and Houston. 

I think we need the A's and Angels to get hot. LOL. The Rangers, Twins, Guardians, Mariners, and Astros play those two teams a lot, collectively. If they just roll over and lose every series, it will be hard to catch everybody, especially considering that these teams still play each other a fair amount so they will be trading wins and it will be mathematically impossible for all of them to just tank.

At a BARE MINIMUM Toronto needs to go 23-18 to finish .500. That seems entirely possible... until you realize that the rotation is Cease, Soriano, and then almost nothing. It is far too wishful. Like, how can a team that is rolling out Max Scherzer, this version of Shane Bieber, and then some unholy bullpen game featuring SWR and Matt Waldron for like, 25 more games, hope to do that? With no offense...

Sad reality but the truth. I dont think anyone should be getting excited about a potential run or making the playoffs… this team just doesn’t have the players right now to do that. Too many injuries and underperformers

The Trey injury is really devastating.

With him in the fold you can see the path to the playoffs. Cease is dealing, Soriano and Trey are providing strong starts most every turn, you hope Bieber bounces back some, and then Max just needs to show a pulse.

That was all plausible, if a little unlikely.

But replace Trey with SWR and Waldron? Yikes.
