31. Ryan Sprock, C

Drafted: 8th Round, 2025 from Elon (MIN)
Age 21.7 Height 5′ 10″ Weight 205 Bat / Thr R / R FV 40
Tool Grades (Present/Future)

Sprock is a compact, multi-positional prospect with quick hands and a punchy, line drive swing. He went to high school in New Jersey at Rick Porcello’s alma mater, then was an excellent small conference two-way player at Elon, where he played both corner infield positions and started as an underclassman before shifting to relief as a junior (he bumped 96). A young-for-the-class prospect, the Twins began toying with a catcher conversion for Sprock late last summer, something they’ve leaned into this season. It’s working. Sprock has pretty quickly become a good receiver, ball-blocker, and thrower while still playing some corner infield and left field. His current trajectory suggests that catcher will be his best defensive position very soon.

Though he’s not likely to make much impact at the plate, Sprock’s short, punchy line drive swing generates enough contact that he’s an interesting offensive prospect for a catcher. It’d be nice for him to continue in a multi-positional role as he climbs the minors (he isn’t a great third baseman) because it adds fun window dressing to his profile, but it isn’t especially important to Sprock’s big league future, which early on looks like it’ll be as a contact-oriented backup catcher.

This deal doesn't really make much sense for either team for the most part, but sign me up for a 40 FV prospect who has performed in his early pro career for a rental of 35 year old Tommy Nance.

The Jays during the Atkins tenure have been catcher whisperers, so pretty satisfied with this acquisition, however inconsequential it likely ends up being.

Hmm I kind of like the trade for both teams. Twins need the bullpen help and he goes from a low leverage guy for us to a middle innings guy for the Twins. He's probably one of their Top 4 or 5 relievers.

It is interesting for the Jays as we are still trying to contend and he's better than Dallas and Corbin.

But I guess the FO probably just wants our back of the bullpen types to be able to throw more than one inning and Nance is pretty much a one inning guy. And without options he becomes less valuable when we get to the trade deadline and try to add arms anyway?

So just move him now for a 40 FV and we don't lose much, while also freeing up a roster spot for the trade deadline in 3 weeks.

Hes also kind of a 1 trick pony with his curveball being his only plus pitch. His sinker and slider are pretty bad

But why?

Is Max Scherzer coming back as a setup man or something? What is the corresponding 26 man move
