glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Given how cheap the Red Sox have acted recently, this probably takes them out of the Bichette market unless they finally want to act like a big market team again.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I don't hate Ranger Suarez, but its completely insane to nickle and dime a player like Alex Bregman and then give Ranger Suarez 5/130. Spanky__99, Pinkfloid, max silver and 5 others 8
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 14 Posted January 14 It's probably a solid signing but I remain optimistic that it will go terribly G-Snarls, Orgfiller, Spanky__99 and 2 others 2 3
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I still think Cease is the best starting pitcher added to any AL East roster this off season Hope that's true
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I like Ranger Suarez a lot, but his injury history and declining velo are great indicators for this hopefully being a terrible contract that could look awful as soon as the third season.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Ugh the Red Sox rotation + rotation depth is annoyingly good Outside looking in: all of Early, Tolle, Crawford, Harrison, Sandoval, Houck I guess they might trade Bello. Some rumours they wanted to.

The competition is: Sonny Gray (Sox) Ranger Suarez (Sox) Johan Oviedo (Sox) Shane Baz (O's) Zach Eflin (O's) Ryan Weathers (Yankees) - lol Cody Ponce (Jays) Shane Bieber (Jays), arguably since he was already on the roster so wasn't "added" to it per se Steven Matz? Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 14 Posted January 14 4 minutes ago, philly30 said: Suarez has a bad back, he will pitch the entire season healthy Suarez starts since becoming a full-time rotation mainstay (age 26 season onwards): 2022 - 29 GS 2023 - 22 GS 2024 - 27 GS 2025 - 26 GS He's never pitched an entire season while being fully healthy, and I don't expect that to suddenly change starting in his age 30 season unless you know something I don't. He carries quite a bit of injury risk, even relative to the usual injury risk that all pitchers do. He's also lost over 2 mph of velo since 2023.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Some extra details - The Red Sox are going to sign left-hander Ranger Suárez, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. It’s a five-year deal worth $130MM, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. There are no deferrals and no opt-outs, per Nightengale. The pact does not include a no-trade clause, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The Sox have a full 40-man roster and will need to make a corresponding move in order to accommodate the Boras Corporation client.

I think this feels a lot like the Ryu deal from several years ago although Suarez has been better at avoiding the injured list. Stangstag 1

Much rather have Cease even with the extra two years of term. He's been a lot more durable, and it's a lot easier to dream on a CY caliber season for him than it is for Suarez sitting 91. To be fair, Red Sox improved their lineup, Suarez is a good signing for them, and if they find Bregman replacement, they will be as good than Jays.
