I never suggested the FO ‘waits for certainty.’ I pointed out that checking in on Ketel Marte, a high-value, controlled infielder, signals preparation for a specific roster outcome involving Bichette. That’s not radical, it’s just reading the landscape instead of reciting generic business cliches. The irony is you accused me of not understanding the basics while completely sidestepping the baseball logic because you were more invested in performing authority than actually discussing anything. If you need to posture to feel like the smartest guy in the room, fine, but don’t mistake that for winning an argument. When you’re ready to talk baseball instead of talking down to people, let me know. Just take your loss and move on. You've jumped to conclusions stating that the Blue Jays front office simply acquiring about Ketel Marte means that they think Bo is gone, and that's not remotely true. It would be borderline negligence for a front office on a competitive team not to at least check in on the status of an elite player on a budget contract at an area of need if this player were actually available. This front office is nothing if not thorough and they tend to kick the tires on every available player when formulating their offseason plan and this is a good thing. They tend to be very flexible in their offseason plan making as well and pursue multiple angles to improve the team such that the entire plan isn't contingent on a singular acquisition. This is no different with Bo Bichette, they will continue to negotiate with Bo until the time that he's signed as a Blue Jay or elsewhere and a simple check in with the Diamondbacks about Ketel Marte's availability/lack of availability does nothing to change this.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 The Blue Jays would be checking in on Marte for two reasons: The obvious one that everyone has said. You turn over every stone. For leverage specifically in negotiations with Bo. You don't want Bo Bichette's camp to think you do not have other options. You actually want them to think you can turn to other players - there are other signings and trades available. "Bo's agent is dicking around. Can we leak that we checked in on Ketel Marte? Maybe that will get negotiations moving again."

The_DH Verified Member Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 Any decent GM will be checking in on tons of players of value, some of which they may be interested in, some of which they may not. The only way to understand value is to determine where all players fit in. Value changes a great deal over time and I'm not talking a specific player but types of players. Teams used to pay a lot for high speed outfielders, not so much anymore. Just let the GM's talk and ....Let It go.

You just repeated the same point three people have already made, and none of you have actually addressed what I said. I never claimed a ‘check-in’ proves Bo is gone. I said that checking in on Marte specifically is part of preparing for scenarios where the middle infield changes, which naturally includes Bichette’s situation. Saying ‘the FO checks on everyone’ doesn’t resolve that. It just ignores the nuance. Anyway, I’ve made my point. If you want to treat it like some huge meltdown, go ahead. I’m done going in circles.

Wild stuff lol There’s nothing to ‘change.’ My point has been the same from the start, checking in on Marte specifically fits into middle-infield contingency planning, which naturally includes Bichette’s situation. If you want to pretend that’s ‘doubling down’ because it makes for a better storyline in your head, that’s fine. I’m just discussing the baseball side.

Nobody is arguing that teams don’t talk to multiple players in the offseason. The point was that checking in on Marte specifically, a high value, controlled infielder, is usually tied to middle-infield planning, including scenarios where Bichette isn’t extended. Pretending that every ‘check-in’ is equal is where your argument falls apart. There’s a difference between broad off-season canvassing and targeting a player whose position overlaps with your franchise shortstop/2B's long-term role. You can call that “cope” if it helps you, but it doesn’t make your oversimplified take any less shallow. I feel like everyone in this conversation is wrong and just arguing in circles Yes some are acting like self righteous douche canoes. I don’t disagree But you are acting like the Jays have insulted Bo Bichette by doing their due diligence on players available. Like they’re on tinder before actually breaking up with Bichette Spanky said it best that they aren’t going to get caught with their dick in their hand while Bo signs elsewhere and Marte gets traded Spanky__99 1

I’m saying that checking in on Marte specifically, not just any random depth piece, naturally ties into middle-infield planning, and Bo’s situation is part of that landscape whether anyone wants to admit it or not. That’s not blaming the FO or suggesting they’re doing something wrong, it’s just acknowledging why this particular name raised eyebrows.

Yes, that’s the sentence, and the context was always implicit: a check-in on Marte only really matters in the context of middle-infield planning, and Bo’s future is naturally part of that. It wasn’t ‘Bo is gone,’ it was shorthand for why the Marte rumour raised eyebrows in the first place.

I think the bolded part is the only reason people have been giving you grief. I'm guessing it more or less dawned on you that Bo could actually be lost in free agency or something of that sort, but the front office can't just assume that they are going to retain Bo in free agency and need to work on contingencies until they actually acquire some targets.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 The first step in having proper discussions here is for us all to admit that we are ALL massive losers. There is no douche and non-douche; no cool kids and uncool kids. There are just smart douchebags and stupid douches. That's it. Govern yourself accordingly. Try to at least avoid being a stupid Blue Jays douche. John_Havok, max silver, Spanky__99 and 1 other 3 1

Stop trying to gaslight everyone else here by pretending you didn't write what you actually wrote. Just own the mistake and move on, it's really that easy. This is quickly turning into a Grant kind of situation where he says something foolish, gets slammed for it, refuses to budge and doubles/triples/quadruples down on the silly statement and loses what little remaining respect he still had. Don't be a Grant, one of them is more than enough. Gen.Disarray 1

204Jays Verified Member Posted November 26, 2025 Posted November 26, 2025 With how drawn out Free Agency is - I kind of hope there is a lockout. No other sports league has this much gamesmanship where teams/players/agents nickle and dime each other so hard. A cap fixes that.

I don't know if you follow hockey, but everything happens in like 2 days at the start of the offseason and it sucks. Baseball fans have to deal with a 5-month offseason, and the fact that free agency lasts until spring training is a feature not a bug IMO
