He can do his thing in Buffalo and earn his way back once the rehab stint is over
keggy Verified Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 If you're a bench player with no versatility you need to absolutely mash to even justify your roster spot. Not sure what the plan with France is Jays24, John_Havok and hanton 3
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 Sometime in the first week of October, we are going to look back on today and wish we did more. This was not enough for a team that wasn’t expected to compete this year, managed to take first place, and has seen some recent struggles with the pitching staff. We have several key pending free agents. We needed reinforcements and we didn’t get enough. hanton 1

The recent struggles we had with the pitching was mostly just Bassitt getting pounded on the road (big surprise there) and two AAA starters coming up and getting pummeled in a spot start because of a double header, and then they used a position player to finish off a blow out.

Kind of unfair to only look at it like that. How is Hoffman doing in non save situations? Its his overall performance that should be measured, not just save opportunities since these type of relievers are asked to do more than just that.
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 Athletic review of our deadline is that we are one of the losers of the deadline. Should have got better relievers essentially. Stangstag 1

You sound like Jays24 lol We added the best starter available (seriously, that is not a misprint) and two late inning relievers that throw 98 mph and you are whining that we didn't add enough to the pitching staff? Who else did you want us to get? Jays24 1
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 I'm happy we took the chance with Bieber but not happy that we didnt get a true backend reliever thats better than Hoffman. He is not good enough to be your best reliever. It would have been nice to get a middle of the order or leadoff bat but I trust in the guys coming back can provide the punch needed. Basically Santandar better come back this year at a good level because we'll need that power threat in the playoffs.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 Will see how everything pans out. Still think we needed one more bat. Starting prospect depth took a massive hit and I realistically don't known how much better this team got. It really all rides on how well Bieber does. Don't really understand the point of rostering Ty France at all.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 I'm just really glad the Red Sox didn't get Joe Ryan. I almost s*** my pants at the gym when I read that. Thank god that was f*** up. Stangstag 1
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 How many teams added more talent to their MLB roster than the Jays over the last couple of days? If it wasn't enough, its because the team isn't good enough. Terminator 1
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 The more i look at varland.. i just don't see it. His stuff really played up in relief but he's still not even 9k/9. This is the literal first year he's been good and he's 27. He throws hard and he gets groundballs. That's nice but why is that so important in terms of getting control? The yankees got two better relievers for less than we paid for one. That matters way more this year. they both also have way more track record. Either spend more and get Jax who strikes out the world and has control. Or spend less and get better rentals. We chose the weird middle where we got control of someone with no track record and doesn't strike people out. He's essentially a slightly worse version of Fisher. I love fisher. The point is we can create our own fisher again next year. We don't need to buy control of that.

Good thing is he doesn't walk anyone and has a solid 2.02 ERA.

You seem to love the Yankees deadline and I think it is criminal what they got Bednar and Doval for but outside of that, Siranthony and Varland are right there in terms of velocity, results and projections. They also got Bird I guess, but their bullpen was a mess outside of Williams and Weaver so they needed another guy more than we did. And of course we got an SP1 and they didn't acquire a starter at all despite Cashman trying.

Funky Verified Member Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 If Bieber lives up to expectations, Gausman is our 2, that leaves Berrios, Bassitt, Lauer and Scherzer fighting for the last 2 playoff starters. could we see Mad Max pitch out of the pen in the playoffs? The dude is competitive as hell and hasn’t been going deep into games. Maybe his stuff ticks up a bit with reliever work? Could be a weapon in the pen. any news on Sandlin and Garcia. If they are back we do have a good looking pen

I mean hell, we also added two good relievers but we added an SP1 on top of it. The Yankees will be considering Marcus Stroman for playoff games lmao The Yankees rotation is hanging on by a thread. Rodon is an older dude....often older dudes fade towards the end of the season. They have no depth. If Rodon or Fried went down, they'd be finished.

Yeah they needed a starting pitcher and some starting position players and instead they got some late inning relievers and platoon bats. I think Cashman knows his team is cooked this year with the Judge injury (barring any playoff luck which is possible) so he focused on guys with some control so they could reload next year with Cole coming back.

Let's see how Bednar and Doval do the rest of the way vs Varland and Dominguez who are at least proven this year in the AL and have put up strong numbers so far this year.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 STUFF+ Varland 110 Doval 104 LOCATION+ Varland 104 Doval 99 ERA Varland 2.02 Doval 3.09 xFIP Varland 3.04 Doval 3.68 And Doval has pitched in SF. It is a bit of a PR problem because milquetoast fans and boring media guys want teams to just do the obvious predictable things. Trade for David Bednar! Go get Sandy! Who the hell is Luke Varland?
