We need Schneider at least or go out and get a different rightie bat. Roden is the obvious one to trade i guess, although maybe loperfido would get more back?
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 What about something like clase, orelvis for jake bird? Too little? I'm finding it hard to guage what would be a good price.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 Could the Guardians shop Shane Bieber? He's in the middle of his rehab and could be a nice arm for the top of the rotation if he returns to his previous elite form.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 Yeah if the Jays can't add a true front of the rotation starter like Cease or deGrom, probably it's best to double down in the bullpen. Hoby Milner would be a nice lefty and has posted a 1.6 WAR thus far with a 2.17 ERA/2.12 FIP and 8.15 K/9. One of Bednar/Duran/Clase/Jax/Bird would be nice. If the Jays really want to add an arm who could start, would target someone who can flip back and forth between the rotation and pen. Mike Soroka could be a nice fit who could provide multiple innings out of the pen and start if needed in an emergency if someone goes down on the IL. Mentioned Harrison Bader's name before, and also just read Max suggest him. Would be a nice fit here and upgrade over Straw and strengthen the Jays outfield defense even more. Plus as some have mentioned Varsho's name in trades, at least adding an OF like Bader would lessen the blow of losing Varsho if the Jays were able to move him for a top of the rotation arm like Cease.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 So the Royals are still adding, I guess that takes Bubic and Lugo off the list as targets, I don't get why but that blows, I was hoping for the Boob, he'd be a great fit in the top of our rotation, the Jays need arms and Bednar and Santana would make sense in a one stop shop of those guys, we have the close to MLB bats they're looking for. Anyhow, should make for an interesting week coming up.

jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 27, 2025 Posted July 27, 2025 I think a pitcher who could slot in our top three might be functionally unobtainable at the deadline. The pen though is eminently addressable. Assuming Sandlin and Garcia are expected back, i think you could try something like this before they come back. - Hoffman - Leverage Reliever - Rodriquez - Little - Fisher - middle reliever (opposite hand to leverage guy) - Nance - long reliever/6th starter type/manoah? Then option Bruhil, Sandlin when back, Fluharty. These are the triple A depth. DFA Green and DFA Nance if Garcia comes back or he blows up. The assets to trade... Jimenez, Clase, and Martinez are out of options next year. Kasevich is rule 5 eligible this year. As are Tieddeman and Rojas.

Yeah someone like that gives you rotation depth to help make it through the rest of the regular season more safely and displaces your worst bullpen arm in the playoffs. Not terrible. That plus one killer late inning stopper? Would that be enough?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Author Posted July 28, 2025 Dan Szymbborski came up with some mock trades in his latest Fangraphs article and here's the one he came up with for the Jays. Quote MOCK TRADE: The Toronto Blue Jays acquire P Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins for OF Alan Roden, 3B Orelvis Martinez, and OF Yohendrick Pinango https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-makes-some-deadline-trades-2025-edition/ Spanky__99 and Pendleton 2

We need a frontline playoff starter and late inning relievers. Any bat would have to be some sort of bench upgrade or a legit star. So Keller is out and Sandy might be too unless they are very confident that they could make a tweak to get him back to an ace. Rentals like Cease could be in. It's f*cking GO TIME for Atkins. Push the chips in the middle. The timing is perfect.

hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 I'd make that trade - would Miami ? what are they trying to do anyway, team that seems to be in perpetual rebuild mode
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 That cabrera trade is based on Roden being almost as valuable as Nimmala on their list. So sub in Nimmala if you don't think roden is that valuable.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 Cabrera has been my favourite pitching target all along, I'd definitely be happy with that deal. He's good now but still gives the impression that the best is yet to come. Walker can turn him into a bonafide stud. Spanky__99 1
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 It's funny how much the Jays prospect values have changed. I look at that deal and Pinango is the toughest one to lose, to me. Spanky__99 and sliderguy35 2
hanton Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 Aroldis Chapman was removed from yesterdays game and is day-to-day with back spasms, throw in the Red Sox as another team looking for an upgrade in the pen.
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 I like roden. He's has had high exit velos before, doesn't strike out, can take a walk... i think there is a pretty decent chance he ends up with more career war than yesavage or nimmala. i can imagine a team out there getting him out to meet the ball earlier and he turns out to be a pretty good player. The corner outfield thing is a bummer though.

Wow I'm surprised that this could potentially be fair value for Cabrera who looks to be an ace in waiting with a little bit of tweaking of his arsenal. I'd guess that the Marlins would like some of the high octane arms in the system in a potential trade as well, although I don't know the state of their farm system and present needs.
sliderguy35 Verified Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 i like cabrera a lot from a stuff / upside perspective & I think the strike-throwing improvements are real this year. upping his zone rate & first pitch strike rates without losing any whiffs is usually a great sign. BUT i'd be wary about getting someone who's yet to eclipse 100 innings in a full season for the stretch run & playoffs when he's already at 88 innings for the year. he's missed significant time in the last 2 seasons with shoulder impingement issues & has already been on the injury report twice this month with elbow soreness. maybe the fact that the jays have starting pitching depth makes it worth it to go for an upside play, that's the call that atkins is gonna have to make. but all else equal i'd probably feel better about a similar package for alcantara. side note: im kinda bummed the jays weren't able to bring handsome randal back. he's kind of exactly what theyre looking for out of that bench spot
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 That's one reliever off the trade market. Spanky__99 and Stangstag 1 1
jmomcc Verified Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 I believe this literally and not in an ironic way to be clear. Society would be way better off with organized crime handling gambling, just so there is SOME barrier to entry.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 After the blowback from sweeping Ohtani's gambling under the rug, I wouldn't be surprised if they come down hard on Clase, should the allegations be true.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 Got a feeling the Jays are going to add a piece that no ones talking about with long term control. This isnt 2015 where we knew the team had like a few years left of true contention, we should be expecting prolonged success here. I'd be shocked if we added any rental type unless it came at a super cheap price (doubtful).

I fully expect the team to at least add a rental reliever at the deadline given the far more reasonable cost.
