7 HR's allowed for Hoffman already. Not good. Hopefully it's correctable as the rest of his numbers look fine.

Another good win on the road. Nice to get the first 2 with Francis up next.

I still think Hoffman is nasty and closer stuff but why are we riding this rollercoaster

Not sure, the HR/FB rate from this entire team is alarming, it's been this way for a few years now.

Heineman is worth his weight in gold right now on both sides of the ball. I just hope this lasts. Springer with a MASSIVE homer and Barger becoming something in front of our eyes, this is how we can make a genuine challenge.

For sure, but its a bit more confusing for Hoffman than others but I can’t work out why teams don’t seem to miss every mistake we make.

MLB tv just cut my coverage of JB being inducted into Canadian hall of fame 😢. I flew from Scotland and watched him flip his bat in that 7th inning live. It’s the single greatest thing I’ve ever seen in sport (and I live in a pretty sports crazy city, Glasgow)

Heineman's weight in gold would be about $3.5 million. So you're not far off.

I think Fisher is a stud and easily deserving of leverage innings.

Swanson is not in my circle of trust at the moment and there's no reason he should be in Schneider's at this point.

Agreed he’s gotta be on a short leash, probably gone after the season anyway

That was more my fear of Swanson in the 9th, but yeah Fisher might be safe in more high leverage spots.

Surely even Schneider wasn't thinking about throwing Swanson in that spot.... or was he....

I don't believe so. I was thinking we were down a lot of arms and Hoff was unavailable when I read that.

Shulman mentioned that possibility (Swanson in the 9th) during the broadcast, which terrified me, but thankfully it didn’t happen. He was just spitballing assuming Hoffman wasn’t available.

Vlady is an excellent 1B IMO, f*** oaa, he's actually 12th overall for 1B

oaa doesn't take into account picks and tosses to pitchers covering plus footwork around the bag.

We've had discussions about this before and confirmed with Tom Tango, the difference between the best and worst "pickers" at 1b isn't large.  Vlad being among the best at picking is nowhere near as positively impactful as his issues with range are negatively impactful.

He has shown improvements in that aspect though so far this season compared to his previous year's where he's been objectively the worst defender at 1b since he came into the league.

Interesting on picks, it would be good to factor that in somehow - even if it is only a small factor.

I checked the individual plays for this season and he's been really bad on balls hit directly at him (OAA); there are 7 plays where he couldn't get the out.  So not even a range issue just not able to make the play - balls going off his glove, missing them completely or making the grab and not getting the out at first with the pitcher covering.  One play was a high chopper to his right and managed to get it but failed to get the out with the pitcher covering.

would be nice if savant displayed the oaa on each play

Agreed.

Just doing a sort from 2019 - 2024 .. Vlad is dead last in OAA among all qualified 1b at -32

His main culprit is balls hit to his right (-14) and balls he has to charge in on (-9), but he was still negative value in basically all directions... in, out, left or right.

So far in 2025, he only negative on balls he has to charge (-2), is positive on balls to his left (2), right (1) and neutral on balls behind him (0). Objectively, Vlad is actually having a very good defensive year (for him) given his previous track record.

To put it in perspective... over the same 2019-2024 time frame, Christian Walker is far and away the best defensive 1B and it's not even particularly close. +57 OAA, and 43 runs prevented. 2nd place is Carlos Santana at +23 OAA and 17 runs prevented.
