Vlads been with the organization long enough that there needed to be a lot more back and forth communication on an extension before today. At this stage, it would be anyone's guess what we could get back but my assumption would be that the Mets would offer us the most in such a scenario. The Jays missed the boat by not trading him last deadline when his value was likely at its peak. I think its pretty clear they plan on keeping him, but there are a few other options in play. Its not as black and white as you are making it out to be.

Hard to comment without knowing how much communication there has been already, but I generally agree with you. Perhaps they were "close" enough to give Atkins confidence that they were going to get something done - and then Soto changed the market? Or perhaps Atkins just got bit in the ass - believing Vlad was just posturing - asking for a lot, whereas the Jays believed it was just a "shoot for the stars" request, only for Soto to change the market and now they are f***ed. One thing to consider is the Jays can't force Vlad to discuss or resolve this. They can ask, but if he doesn't get serious about discussing it, they can't get anywhere. Again, perhaps they should have s*** or gotten off the pot earlier - concluding Vlad wouldn't ever get serious with them, or perhaps he's been stringing them along (playing them one might say), suggesting he'd be willing to have serious negotiations this offseason. Who knows. Jays24 1

Ya I get Vlads performance has made this far from a black and white issue when looking at the long picture. At this stage, he has set the beginning of training camp as the deadline for any extension talks. Everything he has said since becoming a Jay is that he wants to be here forever. We just haven't seen anything reciprocal from the Jays management team but they should already know what their cutoff price is by now. I just don't understand why communication with your best player has to drag for so long. I thought the Jays brass would be arranging these meetings ASAP so they can also move accordingly for the rest of free agency. This lax approach is just weird for me... like what else are you doing with your time that is more important.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 4, 2025 Author Posted January 4, 2025 (edited) Seems like a follow up on the original tweet. Not sure why a Cardinals account has more info than our own folks but here we are. Edited January 4, 2025 by Jays24 Stangstag 1

They are trying to get the extension done by Thursday. They could just do a 1 year deal and try and negotiate a deal after that, but it would make more sense to do a long term extension before Thursday if they are going to do one. max silver, Jays24 and Stangstag 3

Vladito's self imposed deadline is like Feb 22 or something, correct? Spanky99 1

Key22 Verified Member Posted January 6, 2025 Posted January 6, 2025 Giminez is Bo's replacement at shortstop when Bo walks. Alonso could be Vlad's replacement. Signing Santander and Alonso would be pricey but not as pricey as Vlad and Bo - with money saved you can address other needs - not to mention whatever haul you can get for these two at the deadline. But then if you added Alonso and Santander to go with Bo and Vlad - you suddenly have a pretty good offensive quartet. With management on the hot seat - this might be the way to go. Salary is high for this year but you have built-in replacements for 2026 where you can absorb the loss of Vlad and Bo. It's about building a winner - you can do that without Vlad and Bo - spreading the money around. jaysblue and Stangstag 2

Still some work to be done on the pitching side and I don’t think we have 45 million in payrol space to spend on 2 bats.

They did for Soto But not for multiple other players together as a package [Scratches head]

As long as Rogers cares more about the actual cost and less about the luxury tax number it probably won't matter for a single year.
