BatFlip Verified Member Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Fans sip the prospect juice too hard. Omar, who if accurate, said Top 100s bust 77% of the time, so these are guys outside of that. Guys like Babe of he was traded last off-season woudlve drawn rage, now he’s worth a pack of chewing gum The prospect juice? I read on fangraphs that the top 100 prospects from the last few decades have accounted for ~60% of the league's WAR over that same period. I can virtually guarantee that the overwhelming majority of the value from those players was realized during their pre-free agency years. Everyone knows that most prospects bust. You have to reframe it as a probability game with a weighted outcome scenario - the prospects that hit are worth an absurd amount to franchises. That means you're taking long odds on those 'individual prospects' for the potential of a big payoff or two that pays for all heartaches and disappointments. Prospects sure as hell matter.

Every time a trade happens doesn't mean one team has to "get hosed" It was a trade that made sense for both teams at the time, and still makes sense for both teams now.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Wonder what type of contract Kikuchi gets in the offseason.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Speaking about the Astros, was thinking about how Brandon Belt was left unsigned this year and geez they could have used him at 1B/DH with who they were running out there. He would have been a nice fit there. Would have been an improvement over Abreu & Singleton. Shocked they never considered signing him in May/June.

Maybe something similar to what Bassitt received from the Blue Jays would be a good starting point. Kikuchi certainly has more upside but he tends to go in slumps in recent seasons even after the turnaround that has a sizeable effect on the overall numbers. He's 33 years old this season and I'd expect this to limit the overall term of his deal, although if there ends up being a bit of a bidding war maybe he could garner himself a 4th year.

Yeah that's a good comp. If he demanded that much, would you bring him back at that price tag?

He was decent last year. A lot better than some guys we signed.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2024 Posted September 14, 2024 Probably not unless Rogers agreed to increase payroll a bit. The team has the need to add two bats with thump, 2-3 bullpen arms and some rotation help. I've seen estimates of $50-60 million to spend and paying the rotation option a third of that just doesn't leave a lot leftover to fill the other holes.

This glut of 1-1.5 war plug ins is going to be currency to land some decent relievers in the offseason. Legit, there just nowhere to play all of them.

Legit, there just nowhere to play all of them. I also fully expect that some of the surplus of MLB ready prospects will be utilized as currency for relief help. I still expect the team will need to spend some money in free agency for leverage help.

This is spot on. And we see this throughout baseball. Teams simply don't move their best prospects the way they did back in the day (when GM's didn't understand how valuable they were to the team) - especially for rentals.
