Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 This is exactly right Someone who goes through McDonald’s or A&W drive thru and gets a Big Mac or Teen Burger meal is paying probably $13 and change Or you could go to *insert your favourite bar/pub/restaurant* and get a burger and fries for like $18 but the quality is far superior Fast food restaurants figured it out years ago. They no longer have to be fast and cheap - they just have to be fast. Most people don't have an hour to sit in Kelsey's to order a burger and fries. Most are far too busy for that (I know I certainly am). My "go to" is a local mexican place that has incredible fresh, homemade food and they can slap together a killer burrito for me in like 1 minute. Fast, healthier, delicious and supporting a local business.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 I'm curious to try it 5 Guys double cheeseburger $15 vs Big Arch $10 Better or worse value to quality? Both places have great (though totally different) fries I’d take the McDs because 5 guys has 0 seasoning or flavor. 5 guys is the biggest ripoff around. Bland tasteless overpriced burgers.

Even an order of McD's medium fries are like $4.50 now which is crazy.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 The price of fast food has increased to the point where I'd infinitely rather just get a burger from a proper full service restaurant. Or even make your own burgers at home haha. There's a good fast food/gourmet burger place called Matt's Burger Lab. They have deals everyday of the week and their burgers are actually pretty good. Eating at a full service restaurant likely requires an hour+ of dining alongside + tip as well. Most restaurants these days burgers are $20 + anyways. Most people prefer eating fast food for the convenience and want something quick.

A&W is extremely overrated and overpriced. Good burgers but crazy prices. For fast food burgers, Harvey's still would be my No. 1 but there aren't as many around.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 There is a wicked takeout burger place, mom and pop operation, where I live that still prices from $10.99 to $16.99 for their burgers. So for $16 + tax you can get a smashburger and fries. Or for $20 you can get fries and a "double cheeseburger between two grilled cheese sandwich buns" or whatever. There is also no tipping expectation since it's just a takeout place really. I need to go there more... before they go out of business...

My buddy owns a place like that in the Falls, he does pretty well, it's like a small cabin/motorhome type spot, a bit larger than fry trucks etc, he has a pretty extensive menu for a small place. Niko's Place is the name IIRC, haha. Haven't been in a while. You can find dimes like that all across Canada though, best bang for your buck.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 You can also, you know, buy ground beef and make your own burgers at home lmao it's not that hard
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Despite being on the verge of being down to Indy Ball several times Vlad is right with Manny, Miguel Cabrera and his Dad in terms of wRC+ through age 25... The .240 league batting average nonsense hides it. Pretty much the same as Miguel Cabrera, same vibe, same kind of seasons, but knocked down a bit by the league he plays in. wRC+ through age 25 both 137. Take the Miguel contract and Prince contract and multiply by the burger inflation rate and that should be fair.

Manny and Miguel took it to the next level age 26-33 or so... so career wise Vlad has work to do to keep up, but through 25 is there. His agents should argue he is the greatest ever but with bad batted ball luck so far, then make an overfit model to Manny and Miguel to project Vlad's 2026-2035. Also normalize stats to a .255 .325 .425 league but don't tell them you did that... and show the model... and get Vlad a 11 year 550 million contract.

If his baserunning was less horrific those two numbers would be closer, but he may finish the year as between a 5.5-6.5 WAR guy. Not what anyone thought would happen after the first two months. His defense stopped bleeding his value as much these last two months which helped.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 I don’t really eat out, I source beef from my back yard and use that Along with chicken, eggs, sirloins, roasts, and even milk

I have a nice recipe that I perfected over time, and the Mrs. makes homemade buns as well a good amount of the time and that just can't be beat. There is a middle ground that's still fast and higher quality available with the various delivery services that are available now, as well as alternatively popping into the restaurant for pickup of the order on the way home. Unless someone is so pressed for time that they literally can't get out of the car for a few minutes to go pick up an order there's very little advantage to eating s***** fast food anymore.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 You can also, you know, buy ground beef and make your own burgers at home lmao it's not that hard With a burger press and round parchment papers to avoid sticking it's a total breeze to get nice consistent patties.

Any time I go out to eat I generally have my wife and daughter with me, and I'm hard pressed to avoid ordering a few tasty adult beverages to go with the meal. It's hard to get out of a restaurant spending less than $75 even if it's a less expensive place like Denny's.

Pretty much doubles your bill on a date night if you're both ordering drinks. When did the standard cocktail price become $15+???

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 I got an old fashioned the other day.. $19! Was it even mid-shelf bourbon?? f***ing crime these places charge so much for such a simple drink. I know a few places that charge $18 for a Negroni made with Gordons and Martini Rosso. Gotta just shake your head at that.

Yeah if I eat out now, I just drink Perrier Water since if you order a couple of beers, likely adds another $30+ to your bill. I got beer at home and can't fathom spending $10-12 for a beer that I could buy at the LCBO for $3.

If you have a date night and order two drinks each, likely costing you around $100+ with taxes and tip after as well.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2024 Posted September 20, 2024 Ordering glasses of wine at a restaurant is the biggest ripoff. Some places charge $15 per glass for a 6oz glass, which is ridiculous.
