The New York Mets' manager and general manager butted heads during the season about Daniel Vogelbach's playing time.

It became a problem.

 

According to Mike Puma of The New York Post, manager Buck Showalter and general manager Billy Eppler butted heads over designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach's playing time during the season.

 

The New York Mets acquired Vogelbach at the 2022 trade deadline to be their DH against right-handed pitching.

 

But the 30-year-old struggled to begin the 2023 season, and when Showalter tried to deploy other options at DH, he was met with push back from Eppler and was told he had to play him, per Puma.

 

Showalter felt that the DH position should be used as a rotation to get players rest while keeping them in the lineup. He also took issue with Vogelbach's limited skillset.

 

After a 75 win season, Showalter was fired as new president of baseball operations David Stearns came in and wanted to bring in his own manager.

 

Vogelbach was known for getting on-base, but Showalter believed his lack of power didn't warrant being in the lineup on a regular basis, per Puma.

 

Vogelbach's lack of mobility also meant he couldn't play the field.

 

Vogelbach's struggles only made the situation worse, as he had a .690 OPS by the All-Star break.

 

In addition to Vogelbach, Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte and Brett Baty were all disappointing in the first half and Francisco Alvarez was inconsistent.

 

As Puma reported, the assumption was that Vogelbach would be traded at the deadline, but when that didn't happen it led to Showalter openly questioning why he was still on the team.

 

After Vogelbach remained on the team, Eppler told Showalter to keep him in the starting lineup, despite his lack of production.

 

While the organization was debating whether to call-up Ronny Mauricio and give him regular playing time, Vogelbach had his best month in August with six home runs and a .890 OPS.

 

But in the month of September, Vogelbach received just 21 at-bats and didn't play in the team's final eight games, as Mauricio was called up and Baty was brought back, signaling the Mets' commitment to youth down the stretch of the season.

 

Vogelbach finished the year slashing .233/.339/.404 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs.

 

Stearns (who was with the Milwaukee Brewers) and Eppler both acquired Vogelbach.

 

The Mets will have to decide this offseason whether to tender Vogelbach a contract, as he is in his final year of arbitration.

 

This decision will ultimately be Stearns' call, while Eppler remains as GM.

Plenty of teams “dumpster dive” like this during spring. Off the top of my head, the Yankees and Braves do a lot of it. AA loves his washed up vets

Yeah why shouldn't the Jays make these moves?

 

They both suck but Escobar is a season removed from a 2 WAR year and Vogelbach projects for a 112 wRC+. We basically get free looks at them in ST.

 

The Jays probably promised them Spring Training ABs and nothing else and these guys jumped on it. The FA market is extremely slow to develop this year and rather than waste a couple of weeks of Spring Training for a better minor league opportunity they just jumped on the Jays offer so they can get into camp and start working out at the best spring facilities in MLB.

 

And who knows how the rest of ST will play out. They are blocked by Espinal and Horwitz right now but if we made a trade then I could perhaps see a path for them to make the team for a couple of months as seat warmers for Barger, Orelvis, and the other guys in AAA.

Welcome to the 2023/34 MLB off season.

 

After Ohtani all a team can do is dumpster dive.

 

Either that or give out complete albatross contracts to overrated players who will more than likely be a drag on the team financially when there are actual difference makers available.

You are not assessing these moves in the correct context.

 

Every team signs depth pieces and AAAA guys and washed up near washed up vets for Milb depth.

 

These moves for the first time in years are because we don't have solid options at the MLB and MILB level.

 

When we did these moves in the past, it was with Josh D, or Matt Chapman etc at 3B and we had a some decent backups on the 40 man. We had our bona fide DH or 2b etc, etc.

 

Depth pitchers, I would never say a peep, you can never have to many.

 

These moves are the Blue Jays hoping that they hit lighting in a bottle and as a hedge against the mid MLB roster they have so far.

 

I did preface that the off season is not over and lots of FAs out there and trade possibilities.

 

As it stands however, we don't have a 3b or DH we should go to war with and expect a playoff spot. If Turner plays 3b we need a real DH, If IFK plays 3b and Turner DHs, IFK is not someone who should be our starting 3b, especially when you have a Hodge podge at 2b and no real heavy hitters in the OF.

Escobar is stuffed down in AAA along with plenty of interesting infield options like Orelvis, Barger, Parmesani, Leo Gimenez and Ernie Clement.

 

Vogelbach is listed on the bench as a pinch hitter/backup DH but Horwitz is right there with him.

 

Both are on minor league deals so this is nothing to fret about. I actually think these are relatively impressive minor league signings. Way better than what you normally get and I think the new Jays facilities helped with that.
