Yeah, it's been a real problem for a few days now

This is how the forum issues start, God knows how many bots have signed on to bombard the forum.

I get notifications it's down like right now but then come and it's up. I have a feeling it's not closing the guest sessions and that's crashing it. Shows 39k guests online.

This is the issue it causes... ^^^^

Ya but with option B it doesn’t look like this place has Aids on any given morning

which scenario is more likely though.

1. New legit poster tries to sign up cause they want to respond to something right away, but ends up having to wait for a mod, and ends up losing interest when they finally are approved.

2. Someone is excited to join but doesn't sign up because there are bots posting.

Depends how the mod approval process works. I would assume to approve a first post that the post would actually have to be made in which case they would respond without knowing their initial post needs approval

There is also a scenario where a new member finds the forum, sees 12 threads about Chinese cialis and closes the tab

I think the majority of legit new posters would be people who have been guests for a while and want to join the conversations.

The spam bot posts along with the posters who are mostly just trolling or trying to egg fellow posters on to get a reaction would be the reasons new posters would not join. Reading a thread and seeing page after page of posters just going after each other and not talking baseball is what keeps me from posting more. (not that anyone minds I am sure...lol)

The problem is really just a handful of posters that have strong opinions and never admit to being wrong. If you have an open mind, are willing to learn more about the sport, and admit your mistakes then everything is cool.

Also, don’t only post when things go bad. Post when the team wins AND when they lose. There’s a handful of guys that like to only show up when the team is losing to pile on for some reason.

We need to do something different. The current system is not working. I have not logged into the board a day in the past week where there was not a current spam post and a sea of red in the users list.

I’m nuking like 50+ accounts a day for the last week. Something needs to be done.

Would it be possible to moderate new accounts for putting up threads rather than posts?

Like, a bot signs up to make a new thread, they have to be approve before a thread can be started, but if it's a new account signing up and it's just a comment... that's okay?

Seems to me the vast majority of first posts are people and first threads are bots.

Seems like it would be a reasonable solution

This is a good idea

Good idea. You could also prohibit new accounts from posting for 24 hours?

I know thats pretty standard in a lot of forums but ... our comments are pretty well moderated for the most part. Casual bickering will always happen and can be cleaned up. It's really the spam threads that get tedious to deal with

Moderating first post does the same, members and the public won't see the post and the moderators can ban the poster.

Look at the off topic forum right now. There should be zero debate which option we should take.

Being that it is the weekend, maybe the board Admins have time to contact the overall site Admin?

I think we've decided to just let the bots have the OT forum

Tactical retreat

Thing is neither of them know because they’re never here

Which isn’t an insult but a statement

There are 13 consecutive bot generated threads in the OT forum and 15 in total. Probably from the last 12 hours too

Do you and laika really need their permission to execute a common sense approach? Because if you do, they should consider giving you more unilateral power

Neither of us have any ability to change the settings.

The Off Topic forum is really a mess geez. Every thread is a spam thread now on the first page.

I think they’ve left it as is in order to show the overlords what they’re dealing with

admin must give more options to deal with this problem, he should assign an assistant admin who is ACTIVE, his lack of participation is hurting this site. Just my opinion.

He was here yesterday. Said he "changed some stuff, hopefully it works"

Also I have the same privileges as the other mods

Agreed. I’d hand the keys over to

BTS (if he wants to drive)

Admin is footing the bill (or using his servers) to host this site for us. I'm just really thankful that he's willing to do so.

Do like I did, donate some money!
