People who might or might not know much saying the Jays offered the most money to Teoscar Hernandez and Corbin Burnes and still didn't get either of them.

Stop it please.

Why? They aren't that different a player that paying Kim 15+ million per year is some needle moving coup of a signing.

Good lord now I know things are getting bad. Hernandez falls off the board and now Grickuk is getting some love on here. People are getting so desperate they'll go nostalgia mode on anyone. Might as well check if Tapia is available.

No I’m saying they are stupid for not building a strong foundation to attract free agents with the resources they have.

Then just say that - it's a fair point. Suggesting Atkins doesn't realize people don't want our money is silly. Of course they know that.

We seem to mimicking the Giants. Nobody's wanted their money for years. But they never quit offering it and they did break thru with those late signings last year and then added Adames this year.

Atkins did create an environment that attracted free agents and landed some top players (arguably as well as anyone has since the early 90's) - it was just short lived unfortunately. This Vlad/Bo era had so much promise, but something went rotten.

The question is does the Jays' brass have the stones to tell Jays' fans the following:

Unfortunately, we tried to go all in acquiring several elite players. However, free agents made other choices as is their right. We have also made extension offers to our current star players and they have chosen to test the market.

Therefore we are looking to retool for 2027.

Then trade all players whose contracts end in 2025 or 2026.

All under the management of your new president and GM Kim Ng.

It's nothing to do with nostalgia, don't be such a dumbass casual. As already stated, Grichuk happens to be one of the better hitters in baseball against left handed pitching for consecutive seasons, and the Jays have struggled badly against lefties. Therefore should be a fairly cheap way to improve the team's depth, common sense.

I guess there's two different mindsets after missing out on the top free agents. Some want to have a realistic discussion about what's still out there and could be a fit, others just want to be irrationally angry.

I don’t think so, because I don’t think Atkins can survive that and Shapiro probably can’t either

I find this such an interesting debate. Very few GMs keep their jobs long term and most hit a breaking point like Atkins is in now. Is it better to:

a) Make a bunch of rash moves to "win now and try and save your job" or;

B) Make good decisions based on the projection of the team.

I mean, how many GMs go "all in" and actually win and keep their jobs? Most GMs that try this leave the team is a terrible long term position (ala AA in 2015)....if you're interviewing for a new position, how do you justify that approach? "Well sir, I had my back to the wall and was going to lose my job, so I gave out a bunch of bad contracts and made short sighted trades to try and save it".

I cant see that being something a new employer wants to hear.

Vs. a GM who correctly assessed the state of the team and makes moves to try and retool or rebuild. I would think that discussion with a future employer would be a lot easier to justify. Employers typically want people who do the right thing for the company, not the selfish thing for their own personal gain.

If we somehow land a couple solid FAs (perhaps like SF did late last year), and the team over performs and Atkins empties the farm ala AA and we win a couple of playoff series this year - do we think he's going to get an extension?

Well boys, my dumb ass just put down $200 USD at 150-1 for the Nats to win the World Series. Payout IF it comes to fruition- $32,200.00 USD

Cheapass bet

I was actually going to suggest $200. Lol

I am in the camp that you try to win the world series or you don't. Scraping in with a wild card when you know the Dodgers will blow you away in a WS to me is pointless. No one remembers the teams that lost. Unless you embarass yourself like the Yankees lol.

The Jays, to be blunt, needed to sign Soto and Burnes and Bregman and Teo/Santander and a legit closer and 2 other arms and the Dodgers would still be better though we would have been a contender.

I suppose building for the wild card and hope to get lucky and hot at the same time is one way to go.

As for Atkins and Shapiro, they have built a near luxury tax paying team, a terrible farm system with zero impact players coming. Signed long bad contracts to Springer and Ryu and Morales where no other teams were going long. Springer is so bad at this point he should be released. It's pretty sad when you have to talk about a right fielders defense. Eesh. I could live with him if he were your 9 hole hitter but we already have a bunch of guys who would bat 9th on good teams like Varsho, Gimenez, Clement, and Kirk.

I think it's time to be a good GM and President and blow it up. You should be able to get a pretty impressive haul for Berrios, Gausman, Vladdy, Bo, and Kirk.

Then at the deadline trade the relievers amd maybe Bassit if he rebounds from last season.

Houston and Baltimore were good because they finished last for years getting high draft picks and talent. It helps when you don't miss.

For all of the Dodgers regular season dominance in the regular season it hasn't turned into an automatic world series title every season.

The biggest issue with this premise of blowing things up is that tanking really isn't a viable strategy anymore. Baltimore basically ruined that for everyone else moving forward.

I highly doubt Atkins gets another GM job after this one honestly. 10 years with a team and not much in the way of results doesn’t look great on a resume.

It would be the same feeling if the Jays hired someone like Parry Minasian

We're literally the Giants now. This clown has ****ed the org.

He may not, but will probably stay in the business - maybe as an assistant GM or something. He did have the best 4 year regular season run in the teams past 25 years.

AA gave the Jays 1 good year which required an empting of the farm and he had no issues.
