now the question is

do they mets just punt game 2? well, play their shittiest possible team

i think they should. rest the boys.

100%, they need to toss out their version of Ryan Yarbrough for 8 innings and some other scrub should throw the last, ideally they're losing big so they can just put their worst position player on the mound.

Lindor, Nimmo, Iglesias? should all be sitting. None of their good players or banged up good players. If they win they win, but it means nothing to them.

Diamondbacks won 89 games this season you dingleberry lol.

Before you start crapping on other teams, how did the Blue Jays do?

About as well as the 2023 WS Champs...

I think I'd actually rather see the DBacks get the last WS spot over the Braves (even though I do love the Braves). Big time offense - I'd rather watch them over the beat up Braves (kudos for them to get this far). I could see the DBacks get hot again and go on a playoff tear.

Apparently Chris Sale has been scratched with back spasms for game 2. Unclear if they're just doing this to save face and have him ready for Game 1 of the Wild Card series, but won't face backlash if they lose and questions are raised on why he wasn't put in.

Schwellenbach started the year in high A ball, made the jump all the way to the Majors, has put up a 3.29 ERA/FIP since being up, and has held together the Braves rotation which dealt with injuries and Bryce Elder falling off, blew past his career high in innings pitched and has not slowed down all the way to this critical game.

Impressive as hell rookie season.

Yeah he's been a godsend for the Braves this season especially after losing Strider.

I remember earlier this season some posters on here were criticizing the Braves rotation and their depth.

Holy monkey balls.

No not in a must win game they wouldn't be pulling that stuff. You're not going to risk your entire season to play mind games especially when you still got a couple of really good starters for the wild card round.

Yikes seriously? If they lose Game 2, imagine the backlash they would receive.

Wow that's quite a turnaround. Guessing the Braves knew he couldn't go earlier in the day so were desperate to win game 1. Makes the loss that much more difficult to stomach. Going to be a dramatic game 2!

Grant Holmes starting game 2 even though he threw 1.2 innings yesterday. Braves going with a bullpen game even though they used all their best rms in game 1.

Just got home and missed a pretty entertaining Game 1. Will have to check the highlights and watch Game 2 later.

But wow looking at the boxscore, Braves pen blew it that 8th inning.

yes this makes more sense

Yeah damn. Not liking their chances. Looks like Mets could possibly sweep the doubleheader and paving the way for the D'Backs to sneak in.

but who are the Mets even throwing

it will still be the Barves A lineup vs the Mets C lineup

They actually don't have a ton of depth (which is evident by the fact they are starting Grant Holmes in a MUST WIN game). They got 177 innings from Chris Sale, 134 innings from a 1st year converted RP in Lopez, 113 innings from a guy who started the year in A+ ball and 165 innings from a 56 year old Charlie Morton. Elder, Winans, Vines, Waldrep, etc. were all pretty useless to them. You don't have to squint very hard to see the Braves rotation was pretty lucky this season to be where they are. I mean - it worked, but the probability of this happening were probably <5%. Even you should be able to see that.

What a disaster for Atlanta - they don't have any starter available? Crazier things have happened though. Wouldn't rule them out at all as they'll likely be facing the Mets B squad.

Joey Lucchesi going for the Mets. Braves will score at least 10 runs and win easily.

Imagine being a Dbacks fan?

89 wins and your season comes down to... watching Joey Lucchesi for the Mets face off against Grant Holmes for the Barves

Thank God we don't have 40 man September rosters nymore. Means teams can't put out quite as bad a team as they used to in games like this.

If you're the Mets front office you're hoping Lucchesi makes it through 6-7, getting absolutely shelled, so they can put in Eddy Alvarez or some s*** to clean up the last couple of innings.

"Grant Holmes had no idea he was starting this game until the conclusion of Game 1"

What? Do the Braves even want to make the postseason?

I mean he's been okay-ish-ish in his career. Braves might be gripping some tight bats also. Mets still have some talent in the lineup.

The ninja strikes again. Even the players don’t know what’s happening with AA!

Chris Sale is injured which is the only reason why he isn't starting in a must-win game. They used their other starters prior like Fried, Lopez and Morton during their weekend series against the Royals.

So I guess if their rotation was lucky in 2024, would you use that same description to describe the Jays rotation in 2023? Just curious. As well, losing an ace like Strider and being able to eventually replace him with Spencer Schwellenbach is quite impressive. Yeah a lot of their other arms like Elder, Winans, Vives and Waldrep didn't work out. Wonder what would happen if the Jays lost Gausman?

AA wants to catch the flight to Athens tonight!

Oh no, Chris Sale is injured? This is my shocked face

Of course it's lucky when Chris Sale gives you 177 innings considering his last three years combined didn't total that

It's hard to call Gausman/Berrios/Kikuchi/Bassitt taking the ball every day "luck" when they did it two years in a row. More than two years for most of them.

Jays have been very lucky with their rotation, considering they're organizationally completely paper thin. Not as if anybody knew Bowden Francis was secretly Pedro Martinez either.

There is some element of luck involved but they targeted durable veterans who stayed healthy so it was intentional luck

as the old goalies say, you make your own luck

To you I suppose it's an enigma and just pure randomness as always!
