connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 All three things can be true Spank. No one offered him multi year. The Jays would not match the Dodgers one year offer. Obviously if the Dodgers have a better offer on any one year deals he is going to choose the Dodgers for best $ offer and all the other items he mentioned. Fact is, the Jays did not/would not match the 1 yr offer to even give him something to think about. It was not because of no multi year deal. Spanky is a dumbass, posting the quote like it’s a “receipt”. He could’ve very well been talking about his AAV, whether it’s 1 year or 3. Like “oh, you want $20m, alright, just checking in”. That’s all it sounds like. That’s why it was never reported on anymore than it was. No traction.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Teo is turning into this year's Gurriel and Moreno. Everytime he does something good we get to hear about how the Jays missed out. This assumes two things: 1. That the Jays could have signed him at all 2. That he'd be doing the same thing in Jays uniform I'm tired of it... my offseason wish was 1 of JDM/Hoskins and or Teo/Pederson and resign Ryu... sometimes rainbows don't shoot out your ass, so many factors come into play. I can't yell and scream, simply cause IDK. f*** these revisionists.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Outbidding the Dodgers at that point of the off season would have given the Jays four full time OFers and put them into the next tier of luxury tax penalties. And also at that point they wouldn't have expected Springer to have an 80wRC+ and a .600 OPS in June, and they wouldn't have any guarantee that Teo would be hitting like this. He was nearly as bad as Springer was last season. Everybody just loves to climb on the hindsight band wagon.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 KK was a mistake, never understood it if I tried. I don't know why the team was in such a rush to re-sign Kiermaier at that point of the season. Rushing to sign Kiermaier and IKF early in the offseason seemingly limited their options to add more effective offensive players later in the season for bargain rates as a good sized chunk of the available payroll had already been spent.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 KK was a mistake, never understood it if I tried. It was a surprise for sure. We were all expecting Varsho to be the full time CFer and for the Jays to bring in another corner OFer with a big bat. They clearly misjudged the market and jumped the gun on KK. Still no guarantee they end up with Teo though if they had waited.

Atkins has done this in the past as well, for example with Morales after EE was a FA, and others. He seems to like filling holes early in the offseason rather than wait.

I never liked either deal, yet understood they went full in on run prevention and some positive regression from the lineup. It made sense, but...
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 Teoscar was a 130-140 wRC+ player from 2020-22, and then had something like a 126 wRC+ on the road last season. He was destroyed by Safeco and prior to this season looked like a potential buy low candidate. He would have been a really good pick up for the Jays, though if it’s between the Jays and Dodgers on a short term deal, he clearly made the right choice. Yeah always liked Teo. Turns out the entire team has brainfart issues, not just him. He was always a super clutch bat with a great attitude. Definitely wanted him back but lots of guys here told me he’s only 2 WAR player and not worth 20 mil. Anytime I can rub their faces in s*** I will, because certain guys here act so holier than thou all the time. And they’ll never admit to being wrong, as you can see with Spanky.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 How is Swanson doing? haha Not really relevant, we could have had both this season. The trade was a net win for 2023 and beyond.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 The only point I am trying to make, which has been reported by multiple sources, is that the Blue Jays would not match the Dodger’s offer, which was a one year deal. This is not to advocate anything in hindsight. It is to set this misnomer straight that the Jays could have only signed Teo to a multi year deal. It ultimately came down to $ amount on a one year deal.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 KK was a mistake, never understood it if I tried. It’s why their plan was clear. To run it back. That’s your 3 OF. Teo wasn’t in 2023 plan and not in 24 either. Of course, if a players market crumbles and they become some bargain bin item, maybe. That’s all it seemed they did. Shook the tree one time, never circled back.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 “At the beginning, they said to not forget about them. Obviously when we exchanged numbers and years and all that stuff, they said they could not go that far. That was about it.” - Teoscar on last off season to Shi. Reads to me like the FO didn't try very hard to close a deal. He ended up signing for 1 year $20.3M AAV plus deferrals anyway. Not a multi year deal. Whey they wanted Springer/Ryu they put the term - AVV together to get it done. We needed more ISO. We spent $25M AAV on Vogelbach, JT and KK. If it happened just because he wanted to be with LAD, that doesn't jive with his 2023 and 2024 comments about wanting to be in TOR, and not wanting to bounce around to a lot of teams. Who wouldn't want to be in LAD? I don't know - there a lot of players who aren't there and don't sign there. This could have gone a lot of different ways. There is a world where we extended him in 2022 - for 2/3 years plus club option at a reasonable AAV. This FO felt the need to extend Grichuk for 5/52. Not like they haven't done this before. We still might be mediocre this year with Teo, but that kind of ISO can change games and push runs across. It also would be more enjoyable product for us fans, like 2021.

I suspect the primary reason the front office didn't make a stronger attempt to sign Teoscar was due to not having the necessary room in the budget left over. A one year deal on a bounceback candidate was the type of thing this front office has had a ton of success with (Semien, Ray, Belt, Keirmaier) so Teo would have been right up their alley if there was remaining payroll space.

Exactly!!! So to my point, it came down to $$$ for 2024 and not because we didn’t offer him a multi year deal and someone else did, or he didn’t want to be a Blue Jay.

Shaw, Triantos and Horton in a deal and I would pay for Vlad’s airfare also;)

He's morphing into a monster at the plate and it feeling more and more sustainable. He's producing monster numbers without the power, and if/when that comes he'll become the best version of himself at the plate of his entire career.

So, $26-$35 million AAV over 7-10 years for a Luis Arreaz type who plays sub 1b D, has a scary body type and has still not yet shown a lot lf baseball maturity or leadership who you are making your franchise cornerstone. I would rather 3 players who help improve the capitol T Team.

If he's willing to sign something commensurate with a reasonable 1B/DH contract then have at it, but I don't see anyone in baseball being willing to hand him a mega deal even once he reaches free agency.
