Gen.Disarray Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 The funny part is, from a baseball standpoint this probably isn't even a smart signing. You have a guy who's already on his second elbow surgery in a matter of a few years, even when he comes back to pitch, who knows how long he can do both at an elite level, yet he will be paid an enormous sum of money for a significant amount of time based on the assumption that he does both for at least a large portion of that contract. It's also assuming that his body doesn't wear down in general and his ability to hit at a high level also declines rapidly. Yet, everybody wants him, and nobody really cares about such risk in this moment. The anticipation has built to a fever pitch. The pain of rejection would be significant. This a good post. And I hate it
Marew Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 There is no risk in ohtani. There used to be risk. But like I said he’s like Bitcoin, his value may vary slightly but ultimately ohtani is the ultimate store of value next to Bitcoin. It literally cannot physically go down long term. So worst case we unload him to the Yankees in 2026 for their whole farm system

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Don’t lose hope people!! Even though Shohei wasn’t on the flight, the report from the Dodgers Nation guy is still potentially true. This report and the whole flight thing don’t contradict each other. Very possible this is still accurate. The only odd part is that nobody else has corroborated yet.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I am 1000% sure Shohei is a Jay, and it will be announced tomorrow. I don't care if BNS and Shi poo-poo'ed DodgersNation, that just tells me they want to stay on Ohtani's good side (the whole secrecy thing)

We all know how flimsy Morosi is so in the back of my mind, I wasn’t believing it. But others that have a good track record haven’t given up on this for Toronto. So there’s hope I agree.
BaseballIsLife Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Not personally attacking Morosi but this is a load of crap. He does this with almost everything he says regarding player movement - guesswork and most of it doesn’t stick. And yet MLB network still talks to him. He’s a hack with respect to journalism. Again, not personal. But maybe this gig isn’t for him.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 jphoornstra's comment on "[Game Thread] Shohei Ohtani" No problem. I’ll post a follow-up story no later than tomorrow morning whether there is new news to report or not. I haven’t heard anything from my sources that would contradict what I originally reported: that Ohtani chose the Jays.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I wonder how much would be left to spend if they’re paying Ohtani 45M/year?
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I wonder how much would be left to spend if they’re paying Ohtani 45M/year? My understanding is that the money they had to work with outside of Ohtani is still available to them. I won't have a chance to talk to my friend who knows more than I in regards to this for a few weeks as he's taking the remainder of the month off and going remote somewhere with limited reception.
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 You’re right about the Blue Jays guys, they have been directed to not say s*** Isn't that everyone has been directed to do?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I wonder how much would be left to spend if they’re paying Ohtani 45M/year? At that point I believe Rogers would give them almost carte blanche to do what they need to do to shore up the rest of the roster. No way they land Ohtani and call it a day. I'd sign Yamamoto and Hader, then start trading the excess as best you can to fill the gaps.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Isn't that everyone has been directed to do? Everyone in front offices yes. He can't expect reporters not to report

I won't have a chance to talk to my friend who knows more than I in regards to this for a few weeks as he's taking the remainder of the month off and going remote somewhere with limited reception. What I was hearing on MLB Network and some other places prior to the winter meetings was that there was a budget that included landing Ohtani, and a budget without him. It was implied that the budget with Ohtani still had lots of room for additions, but the one without him was much lower. Probably a " if we don't get Ohtani we aren't gonna go nuts" know kind of deal.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I wonder how much would be left to spend if they’re paying Ohtani 45M/year? 45M/year would be a bargain. Part of me feels like it'll be 50M minimum with a chance of 55MM with incentives.

Wow that’s like 70-80M in salary they’re committed to taking on. A lot of holes to fill still, a couple of trades seems likely

Well depends on the years. 45 AAV for 13 years is 585M. I think the years will be long to avoid the higher AAV for luxury tax purposes

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 I was looking through texts and my friend thinks if they get Ohtani they have $40m to work with and if they don't $50m Wow... so we have a chance to get Ohtani while only losing 10M in our budgeting. This is pretty much the difference of having a legit world series favourite to what we had last year. Unreal
