Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Luckily people aren't only taking 1 year when forming their opinion. It's been 8 years of Shatkins with 0 playoff wins while having more resources than the teams you just listed. Oh and ATL has a ring... That's the point dude Atlanta won the WS when they snuck in with 88 wins. Then they lost 3-1 in the first round with 101 wns and 3-1 in the first round with 104 wins Playoffs are a crap shoot. All management can do is build a team that can get to the playoffs consistently, and then hope they catch lightning in a bottle at least one of those years.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 That would be weird for a team to see something in his still healing surgically repaired ligament that would scare them off. If he failed a physical it would be the Carlos Correa situation times infinity though. Well considering how secretive CAA has been with Ohtani and his medical info no one really knows anything about the injury. They didn't even say it was TJS from what I read?

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 Heres some flimsy s*** for you to enjoy This quote to me is just him/agents saying I want more money from the Dodgers and I'll go there lol. Sources add, 'He needs a little more convincing for what many believe to be the inevitable of him joining the Dodgers, it is definitely not a guarantee.' Ohtani is hoping to make his decision before Christmas time and sources reiterate, 'it is really looking like Toronto will be the pick. It is going to take a tremendous offer and situation from another team for him not to choose Toronto.'

Shapiro has done everything and more you could ask for in performing the duties you would expect from a team president. There should be exactly zero risk of this man losing his job at any point in the near future unless he morphs into the evil supervillain type that he appears to be at a glance. Atkins is certainly going to find himself on the hot seat sooner or later if he doesn't eventually guide the team to more success in the playoffs, but there appears to be at least 2 more seasons in the current window for him to get the team over the hump.

Reno and Dunedin nice job though. Guy should get into construction. It's not elite I think Atkins has been fine as a GM (not perfect so Jaysblue don't get your panties in a knot), Schneider has accumulated one of the team's highest ever winning percentages so it's not like he's the worst manager ever (although he's made his share of baffling decisions), Mattingly is about to take over as hitting strategist so I'll wait until he actually performs the job before passing judgement (shocking I know to not jump to conclusions), Guillermo oversaw one of MLB's best offenses in 2 of the last 3 seasons so he's been fine, and the high performance department department has done a fantastic job largely keeping the team's players healthy and on the field (it's not their fault the team has a bunch of bad bodied players who don't seem to want to utilize the resources available to them).

Look at that, a reasoned and even keeled view point. But don't worry, an Atkins whining strawman builder will be along shortly to tell us all how we think Atkins is "perfect" and hasn't made any mistakes and that how the only reason we think the jays haven't won a playoff game under his tenure is because we think it's ALL been bad luck and nothing else. lol
Nope Verified Member Posted December 7, 2023 Posted December 7, 2023 A little birdie told me an Ohtani decision could come Friday night (but the general range is 24-36 hours). "More than likely Friday night" is what the team was told for now. The Jays believe it's down to them, Dodgers, Angels and Mariners and that they've offered the most, but aren't sure if the other teams have their final offers in yet. Front office vibe is cautiously optimistic. Nothing else has happened yet because they had a singular focus on Ohtani, pivoted to Soto for a bit and then went back to all in on Ohtani. After the pitch meeting at the complex, they felt they had done all they could do there and began looking at other needs. Originally they were in a purely wait and see stance with Ohtani but they are at the point now where they feel ready to become active on other fronts. LaCava's team was asked to bring reports on 3B, RP, OF and lefty utility and that was worked on yesterday. Chapman is the only pending free agent they're considering bringing back, they feel Schneider, Biggio and Orelvis can replace the others. Looking to patch 3B/RP via trade but could consider a bigger name for the OF. Earlier off-season conversations included Bellinger, Candelario, Rosario, E-Rod, Miley, Joc, Frazier, Gurriel, Teoscar, Brantley and Lane Thomas. Thomas is one of the names that has resurfaced again in the new phase of discussions and was discussed heavily at the trade deadline. They came very close to reacquiring Teoscar at the deadline as well. Not sure if he's back on the radar now but other names to come up along with Lane Thomas since yesterday are Tyler O'Neill and Soler. Padres inquired about Vlad early on in Soto conversations and Jays immediately shut it down. When asked who else was untouchable in a Soto deal, Tiedemann was on that list. Package would have been built around Manoah. The reason there was so little information on Ohtani is because only a very select few of the most senior execs knew anything. Shapiro, Atkins, Starkman and Colabrese obviously among them. Beyond that small group, even upper level front office people were kept completely out of the loop to the point where even they didn't know where Ross was when he did his press conference. Upper management wasn't briefed on Ohtani until this morning and that's where most of this was shared. Also, Yamamoto has personally requested a meeting with the Jays and according to the source, that's somewhat unusual and that these types of requests are usually extended by the teams. Won't know until it happens how accurate any of this is but the person has never had bad information before. - TL

Braves, O's and TB won a combined 1 playoff game this year. Playoffs are a crapshoot. Unlike the Jays, those teams played playoff games. On the other hand, we only played the wild card games.

Of course the wild card series of the playoffs is real playoffs, just as the division series is, it just happens sooner and the series is only a best of 3.. This would be like saying that the wild card round in the NFL isn't real playoffs either which is completely asinine. I get that you don't like the current front office but there's no need to make s*** up to create imaginary standards to judge them by.

Even that second bit seems unlikely to me, the Dodgers usually go shorter with higher AAVs so it's hard to believe they want a 12 year deal.

The_DH Verified Member Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 I don't know why this hasn't been mentioned but: 1. Ohtani is recovering from TJ. 2. He will want to rehab in the best way possible. 3. Signing with a team that can bring him back will have an impact 4. He visited Dunedin where all of this gets done. Based on all this I could see a contract with a 3rd year opt out being a fit.
