Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Author Posted December 6, 2023 Ok, deep down I know LA probably makes more sense. They are the favorite for a reason. But out of all the other teams in the league, many of which you could make the same friggin arguments on why LA should win out over TO, we have made it this far. There has to be some reasons for that. Money is obviously a huge factor. But there are other considerations in play as well that I think TO can sell him on. If he was taking your guys' advice this would be over already. He'd have chosen LA already so they can get on with their offseason to build a title contender around him. But he hasn't and as shocking as you might find that to be he probably has some good reasons on why TO might be the better choice.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 This place is going to meltdown if he ends up in LA
Jays333 Verified Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Ohtani's camp needed a 2nd team to leverage LA against. Sadly I think we are that team. Everyone just seems to have forgotten that is widely known before the season ended that he wants to stay on the west coast to minimize travel time to Japan. Also isn't it a little worrying that his camp clearly stated plain and simple that leaks will be held against the team and all were hearing is Bluejays and Ohtani and its basically radio silence from the Dodgers.... I wouldnt get your hopes up to much.
Marew Verified Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I forgot ohtani flys home to Japan once a week every off day. Has time to go for sushi at the airport then fly back to LA, or Cleveland if that’s where they are playing.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Kobe used to take a Helicopter to his games all the time in LA.. Although that plan did end up crashing and burning in the end... God damn... have a heart man lol

Don't want to sound too pessimistic but could the Jays be getting used a bit as leverage to drive up the price for LAD? His agency tries to be so secret so no one really has any idea but maybe the Dodgers get worried he's going to pick the Blue jays so they increase their offer. Now taking a PJ all the way to Dunedin, FL would be absolutely insane if it was just about increasing a contract offer so I can't really see that lol. To me the biggest advantages the Blue Jays have are: Player development complex in Dunedin and TO, Ballpark dimensions in TOR (More HR for LHH) and the marketing potential of the entire country. Not sure the city really matters too much, if he has SF on his list. As long as the city isn't a Hell hole I doubt he cares.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Lol I'd say the Jays "leaks" are worse if anything. There were some details about the pitch to Ohtani where as Dave Roberts literally stated the obvious common sense. Not that I think either makes any difference in Ohtani making a decision about where he wants to go. And if it did I think would be a big problem in itself lol. Yeah he’s still going to the Dodgers lets be real

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I definitely would have mixed reactions. Would be super excited to see the Jays landing one of the biggest FA's in the history of all sports. At the same time, the type of figures and years thrown around for a player who is going to be 30 + and who might only be strictly regulated to a DH role and not be an elite pitcher anymore is a bit concerning long term. Pretty much, you have to hope Ohtani hits like Barry Bonds for the next decade to justify the contract if he is strictly a DH. Not sure how many years you can get from him pitching at an elite level, but I doubt he makes over 25 starts again in a single season. I said this before, but would save him as a pitcher only in the second half and for the Postseason. No need for him to make starts in April. Jays have the luxury and depth to do that. At the end of the day, not my money and as a fan would love to see Ohtani here. Obviously understand the risks involved in a long term deal like this. Gotta hope the Jays take advantage in the early years of his contract in terms of going on a serious run for a World Series. Flags fly forever and if Ohtani helped bring a World Series to Toronto in the next 2-3 seasons, doubt we care what happens from 2030 on with the Jays. He won’t be strictly a DH beyond this season jesus f***ing christ
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 This place is going to meltdown when he ends up in LA Fixed for you. But actually, seems like a lot of people don’t want Ohtani so nobody will care much other than Term

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I still think he ends up with the Dodgers, but we shouldn't be disappointed if that ends up happening. The Jays getting this far in the process is pretty damn impressive.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 If he's not coming here then he better go to the Dodgers. Him going back to the Angels would be a joke.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 I have a weird feeling that he’s going to end up in Toronto. I know that the Dodgers make a lot of sense but I think the Hopium going through my veins has clouded my judgement.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 So if we got Ohtani... where would you guys bat him assuming we're not going to get hitters better than Bo/Vlad/Springer? I think batting 3rd makes sense but providing protection to Bo is utterly useless since he is going to swing at pitches no matter where they are. A guy like Vlad would benefit from being protected by Ohtani the most but its hard to justify batting him 2nd after the season he just had. I'd still go with Springer / Vlad / Ohtani / Bo.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Ohtani leads off Disagree... I understand the logic to have him leadoff but there are other effects by having him bat 2nd or 3rd. It provides better lineup balance (lefties and righties) and more importantly ensures whoever bats in front of him will see strikes. A guy like Vlad can truly takeoff being pitched like that instead of giving that benefit to your number 9 hitter.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 He won’t be strictly a DH beyond this season jesus f***ing christ Read my post FFS. Said the chances of him being an elite pitcher for several years moving forward could be slim given the injuries and age. Who knows how many years of elite pitching you get from him.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Bo/Ohtani/Vlad Don’t overthink things I'm waiting for this f***er to make his decision so I can stop refreshing this thread. Got nothing but to overthink things until then lol
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 Exactly... basically what I said as well. Although I don't think any players live here in the offseason (tax purposes much better off in Florida, Arizona etc) so the s***** weather in the winter probably doesn't make a difference. Toronto weather is still very awful in April and May is usually 50/50. September and early October can be pleasant. November not so much. June/July/August can be extremely humid here and unpleasant at times, especially in the downtown core. California weather for the most part is pleasant all year round.

Someone should Ohtani that California will be underwater soon... safer to be in Toronto where Global Warming effects are trending positively here lol.

Said the chances of him being an elite pitcher for several years moving forward could be slim given the injuries and age. Who knows how many years of elite pitching you get from him. Dude you directly stated several times in that post that Ohtani might be a full time DH for the entirety of the contract. There wasn't a single mention that he could play a position on the field if he can't pitch, it was completely binary pitcher/DH.

Either underwater or drifting over the Pacific, warming climate = more earthquakes and eruptions
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2023 Posted December 6, 2023 They’re also concerned about customs. Which probably takes a whole 2 minutes for the players. When a team flies up to Toronto, their aircraft park at North Lounge on Derry Road. Usually they have to wait for two CBSA officers to come up to that area. To clear MLB teams with 26-man rosters + other coaching staff etc., takes longer than just 2 minutes. Now when the Jays go to the US, do that whole same process again wherever the Jays land in the States.
