Nah it wasn’t. This game was lost because the team can’t f***ing hit

I said earlier it was a turning point but now I'm changing....thjey lost because of it. Kikuchi came in and gave up 2 runs - even though Berrios walked the last batter the message to the team was clear - you aren't in control no matter how you perform - the players noticed. Atkins and the analytics team ....

going into seasons 9 with this FO. 9.

The biggest irony of this Wild Card series…

The Jays scored only 1 run these two games

Yet the two guys who got traded out Moreno scored a massive HR in game 1 and a crucial RBI by Gurriel in game 2 for Arizona.

1 more RBI than the rest of the Blue Jays

Shove the way deep the orifice of Atkins for acquiring a career .220 hitter in Varsho, last man out for 2023 season

LOL

hard for me to believe a player with Varsho's minor league stats can hit as badly as he does. Good bet for any player is that they hit to their career average which would make Varsho better than he was this year.

Just shocked at how bad he was. His 2022 looked like Teo's 2019 and I thought for sure he would take a step forward like Teo did.

Here's Varsho's 2022 Splits for Pulled rate on the ground, fly balls and line drives in order of Pull, Centre, Oppo, rounded to the nearest Half percent

grounders 64% 26%, 10%

fly balls 42%, 36%, 22.5%

line drives 60.5%, 26%, 14%

2023

grounders 66%, 25%, 10%

fly balls 37.5%, 27.5%, 35%

line drives 50.5%, 30%, 19.5%

its no wonder his power is down. he fell victim to the same "up the middle - oppo" ******** system the Jays were clearly preaching.

The question is who is to blame for implementing that system if there was one? The coaching staff or FO?

End of the day ultimately the decisions of the coaching staff hired by the FO are on the front office, and they are accountable. Last year the FO chose to fire Charlie in response to team performance. How much rope the ownership gives the FO is the open question now.

I keep saying this but you have some posters arguing that “oh why would veteran players like Springer and Chapman change their approach??”

Idk why, but they all did. Almost every player on the team has career low pull% and career high oppo% this season.

That’s why im in favor of firing the coaching staff.

Scary to think the front office implemented this strategy… so I will choose to blame the coaches for now until evidence shows otherwise

It's definitely not a "new school" approach at all.

I kind of want to blame Don Mattingly. But it might be a case where there were almost too many cooks in the hitting kitchen and some of these players did this kind of on their own.

Don Mattingly 23 Bench Coach

Guillermo Martinez 18 Hitting Coach

Hunter Mense 59 Assistant Hitting Coach

Dave Hudgens 19 Major League Hitting Strategist

The decision to bring in Don Mattingly, presumably to add some seniority/maturity/respect behind John Schneider, may have been catastrophic.

But, Vlad, Bo, and Kirk have always been this way offensively. They have always tried to punch fastballs the other way, all day long.

The two players mostly affected by the limp dick approach this year were probably Springer and Chapman. I guess Varsho is in there. Kirk may be in there as he may have just gone too far with his natural strengths. Vlad is just a fat useless stupid piece of s***.

Springer and Chapman both seeing like a 20% decline in pull % this season from last season is a bit puzzling to me. They are vets so they'd have no reason to switch up their approaches now, especially Springer who was coming off 140 and 133 wRC+ seasons in 2021 and 2022. Although with Springer it was likely at least partly age related decline. That's a contract the Jays would be smart to try to get out of if they can, though they probably can't. Hopefully Arte Moreno wants to replace Ohtani with as many big names as possible.
