max silver Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 All I’m suggesting is your better come armed to the playoffs with 3-4 high end bats, a strong 3 man rotation, and 3-4 strong RPs. If not, like the Jays or MiL, you aren’t winning s***. Obviously you can have that, and so can the other teams, something has to give. Someone isn’t going to play well etc There will always be some noise with some hits here and there from “others” The Jays came to the playoffs with high end bats in Bo, Vlad and Belt. They had one of MLB's stronger top 3's in their rotation, and one of MLB's deepest bullpens. They perfectly fit your criteria for a team with a chance to succeed.

Again, I wouldn’t have guessed how bad they’d all be. I’ve always been pro Vlad, Springer, and Bo. Not that Bo was bad, but not what he could be
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 connorp and many others Not really. What Connor has said all along is you need some dudes who can be impactful in a short series which makes perfect sense Having a collection of 110 wRC+ hitters isn’t that scary

Not that Bo was bad, but not what he could be Bo hit .500 in the two game playoff sample this season. Some extra base hits would have been nice but he certainly held up his end of the bargain.

What is the difference between that what I said? It's almost like you are saying that connorp is saying that "The 2023 Diamondbacks are a lesson in playoff roster construction that nerds should pay attention to."

Wasn’t best he could be, but certainly didn’t hurt team

Basically L54 said what I said, and what you heard is that I knew all along AZ was going to the WS, they found a magic pill that made them better than ATL and LAD, and they are the greatest org in baseball

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Yes that worked well for the Dodgers and Braves. Is it beyond your understanding that there will be more than one team that has the goods? Something has to give. If AZ and LAD play to their full potential, LAD wins. But if you’re playing a dangerous team, an untimely slump can do you in. Teams like MIL, TOR, and teams like MIN in years past, you don’t even need to play your best series and you can still probably win

MikeM3 Verified Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 I still don't get your point. You popped in to make fun of people who are comparing the Blue Jays and them. Nobody is "shocked" that the Diamondbacks are rolling. It's the baseball playoffs. It's very [insert forbidden R word here] Salty Jays fans. Our team is probably better but not so much better that we can scoff at the Dbacks as if we're on some complete other echelon.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 The Jays came to the playoffs with high end bats in Bo, Vlad and Belt On paper, maybe, with a capital M. Each of them was very inconsistent and none of them were firing on all cylinders at the same time.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Author Posted October 25, 2023 Both the D'Backs and Jays were borderline WC teams in their respective leagues this season.

Vlad didn't play like a high end bat all season lol. Belt was mostly a platoon guy and not a difference maker. Bo was their best bat, but even by his standards, he could have been way better.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Both the D'Backs and Jays were borderline WC teams in their respective leagues this season. Jays were a team that benefited in season wins with strong back of the rotation performance and BP depth..which didn’t even factor in. That’s always been the point here. Regular season wins isn’t the best barometer of the more dangerous playoff team Same with their (depth) 7th in baseball wRC+ offense that most pundits knew was sorely lacking
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Holy f*** the nerd herd wants to run ten thousand simulations to determine the best team in baseball At the same time they don’t want fat guys on the team completely negating the fact that one of the two biggest external motivators for performance is the chance to be a world champion
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 The saying is just make the playoffs and a team can get streaky. A streaky team can go either way obviously. However, by the fact they are a streaky team, shows they can win in streaks. The Jays longest winning streak of the year was 6 games, once, they also had one 5 game winning streak. Compared to other teams, such as the Ranger and Diamond Backs, who each had many more streaky winning periods. As far as the Blue Jays were concerned, it was unlikely a team that had shown over 162 games that it could not even go on many sustained winning streaks, would all of a sudden go on one in the playoffs.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Vlad didn't play like a high end bat all season lol. Belt was mostly a platoon guy and not a difference maker. Bo was their best bat, but even by his standards, he could have been way better. Yeah exactly. Brandon Belt (138 wRC+ this year, wRC+ 125 in his career and a 2x WS champ) isn't a high end bat that leads to success in the playoffs. Neither is Bo (125wRC+ this year, 127 career). And definitely not Vlad (118 this year, 130 career). But the Diamondbacks on the other hand, DEFINITELY have the big bats needed. Corbin Carroll (133 wRC+, 131 career) is that guy. So is Ketel Marte (127 wRC+ this year, 113 career). Christian Walker is that guy as well (120 wRC+ this year, 111 career). Those are the star bats necessary for playoff success.
Marew Verified Member Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 I don’t think winning streaks is a skill. There was many more teams with more and better streaks. Even the putrid Red Sox and royals had much better runs than the jays and diamondbacks. You don’t actually have to go on a winning streak to win the World Series. Lose 1 here 2 there. Good to go. 100% luck and circumstance and a hint of butterfly effect
MikeM3 Verified Member Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 The Dbacks are also nerdier than us on top of it all. I think they even have a chick in their nerd dept

Bo was their best bat, but even by his standards, he could have been way better. Belt was a 138 WRC+ bat over the season and hit 19 home runs in about 400 plate appearances. You have very high standards for what constitutes a difference maker.

First of all understand wRC+ is a flawed statistic to use in this scenario. It’s a fantastic stat for regular season purposes, but if you have a second baseman that’s got a .780 OPS and that’s good for a 130 wRC+, why do you really care how he stacks up against other 2b in the AL, He’s a .780 OPS bat.. doesn’t count as big bat Did I confuse you again with tough logic??
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 In the flip side, Christian Walker plays in NL against Olson, Freeman, etc.. why would you penalize him for that lol. His OPS is what counts

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted October 26, 2023 Posted October 26, 2023 Hmm.. ok I’m wrong, but I’m not supposed to know better than you:P That’s a pretty harsh park factor taking .830 OPS down to 120 wRC+. I think, idk. Just seems it would be higher
