My point was only about the endless complaining was incessant throughout 15 and 16 when we played in the League Championship series. Our first playoffs since '93. I was focused on that. The deal was done in 2013 but complaining went on years. Unlike say the Berrios deal where we moved 2 top prospects, Berrios rebounded this year and the prospects we gave up turned out to be s***. Thor exploded on the scene in '15 which heightened the anger. Bit like Moreno and to a lesser extent LGJ this playoffs.

Feels like the complaining about this trade will go on for years too

If there was ever a group of people who need to “touch grass” it’s the guys incessantly complaining about this trade to this day

God I love Kyle Schwarber.

461 foot nuke.

Edit: and now Harper, 905 feet combined on those blasts.

Can claim I’ve ever been a Schwarber guy, but contract is working out well at this point.

Crazy how the Jays could have had Schwarber but didn’t pony up the doe.

Guy just performs when you need it most.

Hopefully Phillies bullpen isn’t a complete dumpster fire tonight.

I expect a complete Bullpen roller coaster to finish

It wouldn't be a Phillies game without one.

Just saw this on Reddit. Reminds me of the White Sox rotation thw year they won the WS.

The Phillies top 3 starters of Wheeler, Nola, and Suarez have combined for 10 starts, 58.2 innings, and an ERA of 1.38. No starter has allowed more than 2 earned in any outing.

The erratic bullpen will cost them

I've never seen a ball players contract measured up against a female deer before.

That would be a little tricky to sign a guy based on what you thought he might be able to do in the playoffs vs the likely expected projections you would receive in a full 162 game season. Prior to signing with the Phillies he mashed in two of his extended playoff outings, was mediocre in 2 others and downright awful in the last remaining post season.

Roger Clemens used to sign for $40m/yr in today’s money to pitch from August on. Teams are paying a tax for playoffs with hopes of playoff production. Of course every year he may not be good come October, but he’s a huge HR threat any given game. That threat also makes his .OBP more predictable than Cavan Biggio-types, as he’ll likely see walks even greater than the season rate from pitchers not trying to make a mistake. On the other spectrum is Jay’s hitters.

He only did that twice. Once in 2006 with the Astros and in 2017 with the Yankees. His last two seasons in baseball.

2006 and 2007, yes. I think a team would do it today. Just my opinion. But I think if Verlander wanted to do that next year (if he was a FA), he’d still get paid. He’s not quite dominant anymore, so maybe he fetches $20-25m or something

Verlander is still under control for 2024, though he becomes a FA in 2025. Yeah maybe instead of pitching a full season, he signs with a team in June, builds up his arm strength in the minors and pitches mainly in the second half. Helps him stay fresh and you're not exhausting his arm over 162 game season. I could see him doing that maybe in his last year or two before he retires. I'm sure a team would still give him $20-25M to pitch just half a season and in the Postseason.

I suggested a while ago the team who signs Ohtani should do the same thing with him if they have the rotation depth to do so. Only have Ohtani pitch in the second half and the Postseason so you have him at his best and he's not being overworked over a 162 game season. You improve the chances of him staying healthy into October. Have Ohtani only make 15-18 starts during the regular season in the second half and you keep him fresh for the Postseason when it really matters.

There's something nice about Wheeler just old school horsing the playoffs.

We’ll see if he needs to come out the pen Game 7 to cement it

The return on that investment wasn't exactly stellar to say the least. If I recall correctly the Astros missed the playoffs completely and Clemens was torched in the post season in his final season with the Yankees. Not exactly a ringing endorsement for this strategy.

Clemens did pitch well in 2006 for the Astros - 2.30 ERA / 3.02 FIP and a 3.4 WAR in 19 games. Astros might not have made the Postseason, but he still was an effective pitcher for them.

In 2007, Clemens looked pretty much done with the Yankees. He was 44 and pitched more like a No. 4/5 starter instead of a No. 1/2 starter.

I'm not giving this strategy a "ringing endorsement" so I don't know why you're making it seem like I am. Who knows what Verlander does after he becomes a FA in 2025. Does he retire, or does he sign another contract somewhere? Does he sit on the fence for a bit before making a decision? If Verlander wanted to sit out the first 2-3 months of the season, he could and I bet a team would still give him close to $20 million to make 18 starts or so and pitch in the Postseason. It's mainly dependant on the individual pitcher.

I suggested that with Ohtani it might not be a bad idea to just have him make 18-20 or so starts during the regular season so you can have him at 100% in the Postseason. Ohtani as a pitcher has never made more than 28 starts or pitched more than 166 innings. In 2021 and 2023, he only made 23 starts in each of those seasons.
